6 Nights In Athens: City Tips?

Sun Aug 18, 2013 1:22 pm

Well kids,

Vacation is coming up in 2 weeks. I decided to go to Greece. 1. I had never been, and 2., the condition of the Greek Economy provided for some MORE than stellar hotel prices. I got the Intercontinental Hotel in Athens for around $100.00 a night! Wow!.

So, I wanted to get your advice on where to go, what to see, what to photograph (will be taking my 6D with me), where to eat, etc.

Another interesting thing to note is that outbound, I will be flying OKC-IAD-FRA-ATH-FRA-IAH-OKC with IAD-FRA on the 748i and FRA-IAH on the A380! Both brand new types for me, and the two largest passenger jets in the world! Any tips on what to look for on these?

Thank you for your time! Hope to get some good responses and suggestions.

In Athens I didn't bother climbing up Acropolis because my then girl friend, who was from Athens, begged me not to. Hence I only saw Plaka, Athens' old town which I liked very much. But don't stay in Athens all the time.

There are some nice places outside of Athens, can't remember where exactly though. But you could rent a car and ask somebody where to go. Where there is water, changes are that it is at least ok there.

The islands are worth seeing, for beginners I'd suggest Mykonos because there's a little of everything. I understand you are coming in late August but bring a good mosquito repellent nonetheless.

Its certainly the time to go as like you say some great bargains for tourists in top hotels. Whilst you are there also you will find it good value.

Obviously the main tourist sites and the museums.

Lots of info here and list of events / dining etc....

With so many days you could even jump on the metro to Piraeus and take a day trip to a nearby Island such as Hydra or Poros.

HYDRA

The Hellenic Seaways offer a Flying CAT fast service with takes 90 mins and costs only EUR51 return.

You could leave the city centre by metro at around 8am to Piraeus Port and get the 10am sailing and spend the day there.

With regards photography there is so much of interest. From the local cafes and streets to the national monuments.

Here are a few I took before Christmas.

Anyway Im sure you will get much better shots. Im no professional photographer and that was taken with my Sony pocket camera. So you should get some great pics with yours. Anything else you want to know just ask. I hope you have a great time and enjoy the city and the food and people.

Its been a tough few years but the city is back on track this year and been very calm and little disruptions in terms of protests and strikes etc....

Iirc, there is an Archeological Museum below the Acropolis, (near Plaka).

Also Cape Sounion is not far from Athens.

I believe that there is a very spectacular Monastry on the cliffs at Meteora, (appeared in one of the 007 movies.

In the past, their was the observation terrace/bar at the Hotel Elmentina overlooking Hellenikon.

I believe that the old OA B737/B747 and an old BAC 111 can be photographed from there.
There is also an interesting Military Museum in Athens.

If you head down Vouliagmenis Ave you can get real close and take pics through the fence. I did a while back and got these shots :

Its worth a trip if you have the time. SX-OAB has been cleaned up and some restorers have cleaned the interior which surprisingly enough is in good condition considering.
