Will The Roman Empire Return To It's Former Glory?

Tue Oct 15, 2013 4:47 pm

I dig the outfits they wore back in the day. Plus I like the reach of their area of land. Could you imagine traveling vast parts of Europe without needing a passport?

Am I missing something? Perhaps some crazy game or trend?!

Just wondering why every second thread on here is whether something will 'return to its former glory'. Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious here.

Quoting xjramper (Thread starter):

Yes, very easily. It's called the Schengen agreement and it's here now (granted you need to have ID on you at least, but it doesn't normally get checked).

As to the question, no, I don´t think so. However, did the Roman Empire actually vanished or rather Western Civilization is essentially its incarnation? At least the legal system in most countries is based on the Roman Code.

You've been to Vegas right? They have those on a daily basis. In fact, there is a bar somewhere on the strip that every hour a midget stripper comes out of nowhere, walks around the bar and if anyone wants to pay him, he will put his balls on your forehead. I wish I was making that up, but it actually exists.

And the Vegas comment was, much like this thread in general, meant as tongue in cheek.

Which Roman Empire? The Pre Christian Roman Empire? The Christian Roman Empire , or the Holy Roman Empire?

Western Civilization is it's current form based on wars and mergers with other civilizations.

This is a great thread. The best part is the people who took it seriously.

Quoting casinterest (Reply 13):
The Pre Christian Roman Empire?

Definitely this one. Stick with what you know. A civilization rife with drunken orgies and kleptomaniacal expansionist violence with a strong emphasis on infrastructure (roads, aqueducts, and harbors) just isn't compatible with sitting on your butt listening to some old guy tell you how someone else can fix your problems.

That's where they went wrong, and Vegas won't make the same mistake. That's why they've got gay midget strippers (hey, to each his own...well, not in the literal one midget stripper per patron way...) and the South has megachurches.

Quoting AR385 (Reply 8):
At least the legal system in most countries is based on the Roman Code.

Well, indirectly, and that came from the Code of Justinian, who was Emperor of the Eastern Empire in the 500s. That's the megachurch side of things, not the orgies, violence, and aqueducts.

No thread on the Romans could be complete without something from Monty Python's Life of Brian:

Francis: We get in through the underground heating system here... up through to the main audience chamber here... and Pilate's wife's bedroom is here. Having grabbed his wife, we inform Pilate that she is in our custody and forthwith issue our demands. Any questions?

Xerxes: What exactly are the demands?

Reg: We're giving Pilate two days to dismantle the entire apparatus of the Roman Imperialist State and if he doesn't agree immediately we execute her.

Matthias: Cut her head off?

Francis: Cut all her bits off, send 'em back every hour on the hour... show him we're not to be trifled with.

Reg: Also, we're demanding a ten foot mahogany statue of the Emperor Julius Caesar with his cock hanging out.

Stan: What? They'll never agree to that, Reg.

Reg: That's just a bargaining counter. And of course, we point out that they bear full responsibility when we chop her up, and... that we shall not submit to blackmail.

Omnes: No blackmail!

Reg: They've bled us white, the bastards. They've taken everything we had, not just from us, from our fathers and from our fathers' fathers.

Stan: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers.

Reg: Yes.

Stan: And from our fathers' fathers' fathers' fathers.

Reg: All right, Stan. Don't labour the point. And what have they ever given us in return?

Xerxes: The aqueduct.

Reg: Oh yeah, yeah they gave us that. Yeah. That's true.

Masked Activist: And the sanitation!

Stan: Oh yes... sanitation, Reg, you remember what the city used to be like.

Reg: All right, I'll grant you that the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the Romans have done...
Matthias: And the roads...

Reg: Well yes obviously the roads... the roads go without saying. But apart from the aqueduct, the sanitation and the roads...

Another Masked Activist: Irrigation...

Other Masked Voices: Medicine... Education... Health...

Reg: Yes... all right, fair enough...

Activist Near Front: And the wine...

Omnes: Oh yes! True!

Francis: Yeah. That's something we'd really miss if the Romans left, Reg.

Masked Activist at Back: Public baths!

Stan: And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now.

Francis: Yes, they certainly know how to keep order... let's face it, they're the only ones who could in a place like this.

Reg: All right... all right... but apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order... what have the Romans done for us?

Xerxes:Brought peace!

Reg: What!? Oh... Peace, yes... shut up!

Will proper use of "its" return to its former glory?

Grammar will be once again rectified if one is able to turn off his phone's autocorrect.

Thanks! I feel like I'm going to bed late again tonight...

That's the thing. I have, but it's not socially acceptable to walk around with togas, armor, and brandishing a sword.

Or brandishing other things, for that matter.
