Believe it or not, after all these years... Kai threatened to come visit several times, but the one time we actually planned it properly, the flight was cancelled.

Threatened?!    Although I wish I would have made it down there

I'm curious whatever happened to UH60FtRucker. Last I had heard, he was going over to the sandbox again.

nothing to do with the server. Just 250+ posts take longer to load, especially with pictures.

I think he discovered the potential for conflict between his profession and Anet and backed away, he along with Baroque and the good Captain Slamclick were what maintained my interest in the non photo forums.. and the photo forum, well I tried along with others to keep it alive but failed.

I miss Concordeboy, Udo and Keesje. I offered to buy Keesje a beer if he came to Seattle to watch the delivery flight of the 1st LH 748i since he often insisted it would never happen, but he didn't take me up on my offer

As someone who's been here a long time and was a lurker for quite a while before that, what I see as having happened is that too many people who had little to no knowledge of what actually takes place in the field of commercial aviation would argue with people who actually worked for the airline, manufacturer, airport (take your pick) of the topic in question. I know a couple former members who were intimately involved in the flight test programs of a couple new models at their respective companies, actually rode on test flights and/or had a hand in the actual design of the airplane. They finally gave up because some 18 year old armchair experts would tell them they didn't know what they were talking about or doubted their info.

What happened is that both us and the site have aged a little. I guess its a natural process, plus the evolution of f**kbook have messed it up a little. But I must say I do miss the fun, the meets, and I often remember the legendary Ukrainian trips. What the heck, at least I met some great people here .)

As an aside to all of the issues of politics, moderators, and website ownership...

May I also submit that, at least when I first posted in February 2000 (as jtb106), I truly believe the aviation fan world was MUCH more interesting. Yes I'm older, but I live in Gilbert AZ on the approach to PHX Sky Harbor and all day my house is overflown by an endless series of 737NG, Airbus 320 family, and RJs all with quiet high bypass engines, that wouldn't interest me even when I was younger! I hardly even look up anymore.
In 2000 not only did we have the crackle and smoke of 732s, 722s, and DC9/MD80s, which was freaking amazing to watch, BTW, but we had L1011s mooing down runways, DC8s all over the cargo ramp, 747 classics aplenty, and even Concorde to get excited about. It was pre-9/11 and we could park next to the runway or right at the end of it and feel the screaming jets fly over. Each plane was different: the smoky 722 with its perfectly curved wing leading edge, 732s with the soot on the fuselage behind the wing, the subtle differences in the DC-10 family, hell, I think a trip to the airport then could even get you a straight pipe KC-135 if you were lucky (I know I heard one of the final Vomit Comet flights!) I remember posting on this forum about Fox network possibly getting a Convair 880 in the air for pete's sake! Even the commuter props had more personality, with ugly as sin Shorts 360s all over the place.
And TWA, which my earliest posts will show that I detested, still flew. A final link to the era of romance and glamour while flying, now broken...
Aviation was different, in look, sound, smell, and beauty.
Frankly, I don't know how anyone can be passionate about aviation in a high bypass twinjet world.

Oh comeon, there is still the admiration of human capabilites on the tech field and the fascination with the airport operation orchestration which interest people and make them hold their breaths and crave for more. It is different, with all the technology we have nowadays, flightradar24 and available scanners and abundant info on the www, but it still has something in it. And I am saying that as an airline industry employee of eight years, burned out and illusionless .)

Coincidently I had been talking to two other regulars recently about holding another meeting at Praha next May, but I would have waited until December before floating the idea.

Or should we create a poll and see whether Praha or Kiev get more votes ?

While I've never been a "power user" back in the day (even less so today for obvious reasons) I'm still amazed by all those old names showing up in here. Beautiful, just beautiful!

Instead I got you guys a crappy pic of a.nuts stocking up on Vodka at CPH. And yes, that's the quality of a 2006 phone-camera :P

Lets decide about it in December, then there will be plenty of time for scheduling holiday and picking the site .)

Come on people, don´t be so dramatic     Being a lurker since the early 2000's and a member since 2005, I'm fully aware the site has changed, yes, things are different, yes.....but come on, I remember many of us feared the change in the site's ownership years ago would kill the site and cause a quick and massive leak of members....that never happened....the magic of a fantastic pic showing a shiny alluminum tube with wings and engines under the sun is the same ( and that was the reason why many of us dragged this site in the Favourites list for the very first time many many years ago ).
This is, still, the best site for aviation nuts. There are other good sites around, there are other foums, yes, but here we have all in one, all mixed up... There's nothing better !!!

It's called evolution, adaptation to a new reality. I fell in love with aviation being a very little boy sticking the nose against the window of a DC-3.... I grew up seeing three holers and 742's passing over my head at the runway threshold....and yes, I miss those days, but still, when I see 560 Tons of metal taking off in the mist I still have my heart beats accelerated.... and you can always have the fantasy to make a trip to Iran and fly a 707, or to North Korea to fly an Air Koryo's russian classic... the magic is still there, all over the world !!!

I'll add to what others said in the other thread. The moderation has completely changed over the past few years. Non-av was hilarious when I joined. Many a night I'd be working a ticket counter waiting for passengers to show up passing the time reading N/A laughing to myself. It wasn't all that long ago I posted something in a thread about Scotty not being around and it got deleted. Just thinking of all the posts that guy made in the forum makes me shudder.

I also miss Baroque. He and I PM'd often. I don't have the heart to take him off my RU list.

Too bad memories faded, ok, maybe calling a piece of newspaper with something scribbled on it a "sign" is a bit over the top...

Frankly, I don't know how anyone can be passionate about aviation in a high bypass twinjet world.

It's probably a matter of perspective. You, me and many others have known aviation in a much different way than it is today with basically two-three types of aircraft (I'm simplifying a bit) dominating the skies with many LCC crowding airports. But what is the perspective of those who haven't known aviation as it was ten, twenty or more years ago ? Do they really care about it ? Are they only living it in the present and future ? Plus today data is very easily accessible thanks to the Internet and this site. For many of us, our passion for aviation dates from before the Internet and thus was built differently. I remember when some years ago there was constantly (this is how I felt about it) someone wondering here whether there would be PTV installed in the aircraft of her/his next flight, or whining for the lack of it. It didn't sound like passion for aviation to me but more something like consumerism.

Oh comeon, there is still the admiration of human capabilites on the tech field

Yes, of course, but I also find it less attractive nowadays than even ten years ago.
