Congratulations To Gibraltar

Tue Nov 19, 2013 11:07 pm

Competing in their first ever International football match, they drew 0-0 with Slovakia.

Congrats to Gibraltar!

I guess their netminder was solid as a rock?    Them becoming a member of UEFA was a longtime coming (so was this match), their next step is to become a member of FIFA like the other UK members of UEFA (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), but I expect the RSFF will put up a fight like they have previously (But with the UEFA recognition, things get a little easier in trying to get that membership.). Is there a deep enough talent pool in Gibraltar to field a decent squad and not just be a potential easy opponent for teams trying to qualify for the Euros?

Congratulations!

...and if anyone needs definitive proof that they're British, consider the fact that they've made a point of squeezing a football pitch onto a tiny little peninsula that's mostly mountain anyway.

But does it have gates/stoplights to stop the game when an airplane takes off through the field?

Almost

A quick run through Google Maps shows the only sports fields suitable are adjacent to the runway at GIB.

They played it just down the road from where I live at the Algarve Stadium (Portugal).

The entire population of Gibraltar could fit in the 30,000 seat stadium.

Oh, but you just did. And almost all sports can end in a draw, those who cannot have mainly been engineered that way to suit a particular audience. Which speaks more of that particular audience than sport.

You know I was joking, right? Hence the winky face. But I don't think audiences that enjoy sports with no draws are any worse than audiences that enjoy sports with draws

What's your opinion of a sport which can take 5 days to play one match and still come out with one of four options- win, lose, draw or tie (yup, there is a difference!)

One is the result when either time or playable balls expire before a win is declared, the other when both teams end on the same run count. Two different results

There is the 3rd variation which combines both those elements. For example, the memorable David Lloyd quote of "we flipping murdered 'em" test between England and Zimbabwe

Not to mention, they're wildly different in terms of how common they are. Out of the 2103 test matches played so far, there's been ~750 drawn tests and just the two tied tests.

.. which was quite memorably reinacted in a test between India and the West Indies 2 years ago, giving an otherwise dull game a very tense finish indeed.

Judging by the coverage I've seen of NFL games, you'd have about 2 hours of actual play and the balance... well, how many times can GM sell you a truck in 118 hours?

Hey, there's been one draw this weekend in the NFL!

It depends. When you start to really understand the rules and get into the tactics, it is an interesting sport. The biggest problem with NFL is the commercial breaks.
