F1 2013-2014 Off Season Thread

Tue Dec 10, 2013 11:13 am

Due to popular demand, I thought it might be time to start an F1 off season thread.

In the past couple of days, there has been significant changes made to the rules for next season. In particular:

1. There will be double points for the season finale next season: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/111795

I'm not sure I like this idea, as it is just one of those "artificial" means to spice up the championship and punish those who are unlucky enough to have had a poor final race (whether through their own fault or not) despite a consistent season; and reward those who had a fantastic final race despite a mediocre season. I think points awarded for each race should remain consistent in every race where more than 75% of the race distance has been completed.

2. Each driver will be able to choose a number between 2 and 99 which will be their permanent number, with number 1 reserved for the reigning world champion should he choose to take it: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/111796

Now that's an idea I do like. I think it would be great for drivers to choose their favourite numbers as their racing number. On a bit of a tangent, if I were an F1 driver I'd see if I can ask for 0, because that was Hill's number when I first started watching F1 in 1994

In other news, there will be a three day tyre test open to every team in Bahrain later this month: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/111797

Also, the 2014 calendar will include 19 races like this year. Mexico, South Korea and New Jersey have been scratched. India was already known to be on hold for 2014. They should be coming back in 2015. Austria will make its return. Russia will make its first appearance.

The complete schedule:

16th March: Australia
30th March: Malaysia
6th April: Bahrain
20th April: China
11th May: Spain
25th May: Monaco
8th June: Canada
22nd June: Austria
6th July: Great Britain
20th July: Germany (Hockenheim)
27th July: Hungary
24th August: Belgium
7th September: Italy
21st September: Singapore
5th October: Japan
12th October: Russia
2nd November: USA
9th November: Brazil
23rd November: Abu Dhabi

What stupid idea. They don't know what to invent anymore.

Will we see the famous 27 and 28 on the Ferraris again?

That's a shame. I was looking forward to New Jersey in particular. I enjoy watching races on street circuits, even though they aren't necessarily the best tracks for overtaking. It's the atmosphere of racing on what would otherwise be public roads. People can get closer to the action there.

Quoting GrahamHill (Reply 1):
Russia will make its first appearance.

I just searched for the track map. It's yet another Tilke-drome ...

I'm glad that the Red Bull Ring is back, though (formerly Osterreichring and A1-Ring ... is there anything Red Bull don't own?), it was one of the better tracks on the calendar that has been missing for far too long.

Quoting GrahamHill (Reply 1):

Then I sincerely hope that they scrap this ridiculous idea before it goes any further.

That's a shame. Di Resta has been pretty good this year. To think that he could be without a drive next season is ... staggering.

I wouldn't buy that used anyway, especially if it's something wearable. I usually get a new Williams shirt every year from its website.

People talk about McLaren having a bad season, having not won a race this year, but the other great British team that has won more constructor's championships than anyone but Ferrari has had a far, far worse season - in fact, there hasn't been much to cheer for since 2003 when Montoya was challenging for the championship.

Well, the only way they can move on from 2013 is up. They've practically hit rock bottom, so they can't really get any worse ... or can they? I have high hopes for them next year. They may still not be championship contenders, but I would expect them to be in the points regularly next season. They've got Mercedes-Benz engines, Pat Symonds as Technical Director, and they've pinched two aerodynamicists: one from Lotus and the other from Red Bull.

It's been rumoured that Ross Brawn may join Williams, too. It's only a rumour at present, but I can only keep my fingers crossed for that to happen.

Kobayashi set for F1 return with Caterham

Kamui Kobayashi is set to return to F1 with Caterham after emerging as the most qualified candidate for the seat.

With rookie Marcus Ericsson likely to be in the other car the team has been keen to employ an experienced driver.

Not really the greatest car but better than no F1 for Kamui.... It will be interesting!

I will be happy to cheer him!!!!

and then the Aguris will be back in Formula E... I am looking forward to seeing them back on the racing tracks!!! More Super Aguri fun in Monaco!!!!

I guess the loss of form for McLaren surprised everyone given they had one of the fastest cars at the end of 2012. Williams has been on a steady decline since the BMW divorce.

Great source you managed to find via Google!? A blog!
None of the major sites is mentioning any of this. Most likely cause there's no credibility to it.
Lets say it will happen, you forgot to mention that one of Caterhams partners might end the partnership and that Kamui has a sponsor.
But at least he will not be able to cause too much damage at the back of the grid.
Strange though, I can recall you said that Kamui will be in a top team one day. I guess for his standard Caterham is a top team though.
When in doubt, flat out!

You have probably heard the V6 engines from Renault, Mercedes and Honda. Various sources claim that this is Ferraris new engine in action. Damn I'm gonna miss the sound of the V8. It does sound pretty sweet in the last few seconds of the video though.

Here's the rumoured driver number selections...

VET=14,11,33
ALO=14
HAM=44
RAI=7
ROS=6,5,9
MAS=19
MAG=20,3,23
PER=11
VER=25,21,27
BOT= 77,11,17
MAL=3,18
BIA=7,27,77
KVY=26

According to some Vettel has actually chosen number 11 as his first choice and not 14.

I just ran into this article while looking for the site's New Year's celebrations pictures around the world.

'Shame on you': Lewis Hamilton blasted by fans for posting skiing holiday pictures online in wake of Schumacher accident

Some of the images on his Instagram page show him without a helmet
Formula One star has been accused of acting in 'horrendously bad taste'
Other fans say he is not being disrespectful and told critics to 'grow up'
Hamilton has tweeted message of support to Schumacher and his family

Unbelievable. Should they close all ski resorts now? I think it's rather selfish of the "fans" to expect him not to go on a skiing holiday just because an accident in which he wasn't involved happened. I definitely agree with those who told the critics to "grow up"! What F1 drivers do during the off season in their own time is their own business. If Hamilton wanted to go skiing without a helmet, so be it.

According to F1 official we are now 70 days away from first practice.

So what about this years driver line-up?

RBR
SV looking for title number 5 and if he gets a superior car he can do it.

Daniel Ricciardo. I don't think he's impressed much has he? Better then his team mate but also has more F1 experience.

Your thoughts?

I think it's fair to say that Ricciardo won't get any closer to Vettel than Webber managed in the past four seasons. He might win a race or two, which would be good, but I think Vettel will be far too strong.

As for the other teams:

Driver's line-up next year:

Red Bull
Sebastian Vettel
Daniel Ricciardo

Ferrari
Fernando Alonso
Kimi Raikkonen

Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton
Nico Rosberg

Lotus
Romain Grosjean
Pastor Maldonado

McLaren
Jenson Button
Kevin Magnussen

Sauber
Adrian Sutil
Esteban Gutierrez

Force India
Nico Hulkenberg
Sergio Perez

Williams
Felipe Massa
Valtteri Bottas

Toro Rosso
Jean-Eric Vergne
Daniil Kyvat

Caterham
to be confirmed

Marussia
Jules Bianchi
to be confirmed

At Ferrari, it's going to be a close battle, if they are both allowed to fight on equal terms. I favour Raikkonen over Alonso - although it may be because I don't particularly like Alonso.

Hamilton should beat Rosberg; Grosjean over Maldonado; Sutil over Gutierrez; and Hulkenberg over Perez. I think it's going to be a very interesting battle at McLaren - Magnussen looks promising, and Button can be inconsistent at times. At Williams, I think Bottas may have the upper hand - he has shown a tremendous improvement in the last few races of 2013. If he carries that form onto 2014, and Williams produces a better car, he'll be hard to beat.

That was an agreement for last year's cars, but I don't know what it will be for 2014.

I belive it is a option this year as well, but most won't use it because of weight concerns

I'm no aerodynamicist, but I don't see why they can't go back to the MP4-18, MP4-19 and MP4-21 type low noses. At least they would make the car look decent.

McLaren have done pretty well in terms of building cars that are easy on the eye. Hopefully we can count on them to do so again, going against the trend of those ugly noses.

So no one has taken 2, 4 or 9 just yet. Then again, given such a vast range of numbers, there's bound to be gaps in between the car numbers.

Hulkenberg has taken the iconic number 27. I wonder if that's a hint to Ferrari

I'm glad to see Vettel take numbers 5 for the rest of his career. That number has a lot of history with Williams in the late 80s and early 90s. If Williams hired Vettel and Rosberg, they could bring back the number 5 and 6 on their car

I would still have liked to see a revival of the number 0, though, personally.

Does anyone have an idea of when the Singapore F1 tickets will go on sale? I'm sure I saw some on sale a month or two ago, but now the site says tickets coming soon?

McLaren will post on Twitter what we need to know regarding the 2014 rule changes and their impact. Here is the first:

Charlie Whiting on the 2014 cars:

"I can't give away too much obviously!" he told BadgerGP.com. "But we've seen a lot of looks, strange by previous standards, particularly the tip of the nose which has to be 300mm lower (than 2013).

"So each team is doing their best to overcome the disadvantage aerodynamically of doing that, and so are coming out with different ideas.

"I think what you'll see is some interesting things which a lot of people will think are a little ugly a little odd. But I'm sure we'll all get used to it."

He added: "What we're seeing are these rather odd looking things and some nose tips that have to be a certain height which may not be the nose itself, but a separate fairing instead."
