A.Net Meet And BBQ 2014

Thu Dec 12, 2013 4:23 pm

As launched by Karel and Parapente,
Let's see if we could arrange a gathering some time in May-June next year.
As it is just the beginning of the planning, everything is wide open ; some ideas, though :
- It will be a full day, or even a weekend
- In true A.Net tradition, there will be a subject to discuss, talk about... whether by some of us or by some invited personality in the industry.
- The BBQ solution is great as it allows people to wander around and talk with everybody... it can be arranged by some of us and the realisation is wide open : it could be pits or what we call a *mechoui* (A whole roasted lamb)...
- It could be arranged by the F&B manager of a hotel ( easy solution which would also allow us to negociate room rates for the travellers )....

Your participation is required and your ideas welcome.

I'm up for it!

My suggestion is...
Timeline: May or June.
Location: London, San Francisco, Munich or New York
Duration: arrive Friday evening. Dinner. Saturday for spotting, photography, and other location based stuff, together or in groups. BBQ Saturday night. Sunday, hangover :P and depart.

Definitely can get good room rates if everyone stays at the same hotel. Problem is people prefer different brands and some use points and some want city location while others airport. But, happy to help in any way.

BBQ is a fantastic idea. Depending on location, I can help arrange

As long as it's not Salt Lick - seriously over-rated.

I am happy to help if NYC is the location
I want to live in an old and converted 727...

MCI, the best BBQ in the world. Spotting might not be the best, though. (see note)

DFW, Texas BBQ is world class. How many AA Super 80s can YOU count?

ATL, Georgia BBQ? Um..sure, why not? Christ, how many planes does Delta HAVE??

CLT, deep south BBQ..mmm. Hudson miracle plane.

ICN, Different BBQ, just as tasty. A nice spotting mix.

Note...I've personally asked both Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern...and they both said Oklahoma Joe's was the best.
Just accept that some days, you're the pigeon, and other days the statue

Sounds like a great idea - count me in. Due to medical reasons, my flying out of the country is somewhat restricted, but any place in the lower 48-states in the U.S. works for me.

Another suggestion would be to change the dates and the location a little so that we could make it coincide with Oshkosh AirVenture 2014 (Jul 28th-Aug 3rd 2014).

http://airventure.org/planning/advance.html

Ideally, it would be great to have a small A.net tent at AirVenture, and invite some of our top photographers there to present and discuss their work (yeah, I know, wishful thinking) but wouldn't that be nice...

SFO would work very well for me, and the original dates discussed are fine also. For BBQ, I have to agree that some of the Southern states would be the places to consider -- Kansas, the Carolinas, Texas and even Georgia.

Well, keep the suggestions coming, perhaps we can make this happen.

Franklin's is good, but have you ever tried Louie Mueller's BBQ in Taylor/Hutto, TX? The word "wow!" comes to mind, and they will vacuum pack and ship their food and sauces across the lower-48 states on request.

Well seriously though, if a larger percentage of people who may be interested in attending are from the lower 48, then I vote for one of the South-Central/Southwest areas-they would be the most accessible and the weather is good in these parts for the time frames mentioned.

OK...
Seems that there is quite a response and ideas are not lacking. I'm all for meeting and Learning.
I have to confess that my initial idea was Toulouse or the Marseille area, as I hoped that we'd have some industry officials to give us a *conference* on a technical / economical subject.
A place in the US with that sort of opportunity would be great, too.

The Oskosh idea : I'm all for it, but the whole gathering would be somehow diluted in a great big event... Can you elaborate further ?
I'm fairly sure that we can arrange good rates from Airlines and hôtels (they are certainly not adeverse to publicity and potential return customers...but southern Europe, after june sees a lot of tourists and that will make contracts the more difficult to negociate.
Thanks for your future contribution.

May I suggest Los Angeles?

+ Korean BBQ everywhere!
+ Baby Blues Memphis-style BBQ (2 Locations)
+ Nonstop to SYD, HKG, NRT, ICN, SVO, HNL, YVR, AUS, EWR, JFK, FRA, LHR, CDG, MNL, CAN, GRU, MIA, SFO, TPE, AKL, YYZ, MEX, BOG, LIM, DXB, etc., make for shorter flight times and only ~ 20 minutes drive for me!
+ In-n-Out Burger - HELLO???!!!!!!! lol!

In any case, I would gladly join in May, preferably, as June is restricted for me.

Bon Voyage!

If it's going to be in the US and on the East Coast or Central area around summertime-ish, I am willing to fly-in to the local airport there. I am dying on doing an long IFR cross country flight in one of our Cirrus SR20.

That's a great idea! Perhaps we could even get a tour of the Airbus facility? Anyone has contacts there?
I work for a hotel company, so I can help with that, but we don't have any in Toulouse or Marseille for that matter. What else is there to do around there? Could we do a day at CDG and then all travel down to Toulouse or Marseille? Thoughts?

PM me if you want to throw some ideas around.

I think Marseille or Toulouse are both great locations and I'd be in for a weekend in May or June if one of these locations gets chosen. Any excuse to spend some time in the south of France is a good one, and aviation related, even better

If you guys do this, I hope it's somewhere fairly close to me. Obviously I would suggest BOS- plenty of places to spot and a huge variety of aircraft, there really aren't too many other airports in the country with the diversity of airlines we have!

After years on here, I wouldn't mind going to my 1st a.net meetup. If it's in the lower 48 and revolves around BBQ, I'm pretty much game.

There are surprisingly good BBQ places here around MCO, but spotting is a big no-no.

In tune with the topic, I say one of the major gateway airports would be ideal, then the food we can figure out later on. I' invite y'all to SLC,but the scenerey is limited (LOTS of DL)!

Maybe a little far out for some - but YVR is a great airport in summer!

DHC floatplanes, HS748's, Convair's & 727's, lots of Asian widebodies, interesting mix of local traffic, helicopters & bizjets, 747-8F, 787.

Vancouver as a city is voted #1 in the world for a reason, very beautiful place. Mountains, ocean, beaches & lakes.

Google the "Flying Beaver" for a beer spot - a.netter heaven. And then move on to the patio at my local, where the waiting staff will not fail to impress ;

I would be more than happy to arrange some floatplane tours and try to do the HS748 charter again (we failed last year). I think a floatplane trip to Sproat Lake to see the Mars or up to Port Hardy to get on the G21 Goose for example with some a.netters would be fun.

I am thinking we can ask our friends to organise a.net meeting in the SYD airport. There's a nice hotel at the international terminal so that we can see the whole view of the SYD airport and also the best areas where lots of photographers to take photos of the close up planes. It's good for the a.net visitors to stay that hotel for the nights (it's far away to the SYD downtown). We can start check-in meeting at that hotel.

BBQ would be outside the airport. It is not wise to have BBQ near that airport as it's forbidden to have "smoke" near the airport. Our friends can organise the club (it's still close to the airport but no airport view).

If you would like to join us, let me know when is the best.

Summer time in Dec, Jan, Feb - it's not good idea to go outside as it's extremely hot.
Winter time in Jun, July, August - it's best time to spot the plane but it would be cold very early in the morning.

Please note that it's not confirmed yet. It depends on how many a.net people would love to join us and I haven't told our friends yet. Also please note that it would be changed - change time and place and plan.

We CANNOT guarantee that it would be on

maybe... we may need limited number of people.

Maybe in 2015 or 2016

Perhaps there could be two separate, ones, one in Europe and one in North America, each in their respective summers - having to cross the Atlantic would no doubt put a lot of people off attending.

And for me, that would provide an excellent excuse to visit both Vancouver and Toulouse in the same year.

Wow, I lost track of this thread and am surprised YVR may be a choice.

As to timing, it looks like July is out for me. For some reason June is often wet for some reason. May or September are usually the nicest times to come to YVR. August should be warmer & longest evenings to get 727 & DC10 action, but heat haze will be an issue during the day (guess that is true anywhere). May can be hit and miss with the chance spring showers hanging around.
