I must say I went to this city not expecting much and actually was quite surprised at how nice it's downtown is, and the beautiful mansions around the bay near down town. I didn't realize there were so many rich people there. Also it's pretty damn big and in that respect quite underrated. I found many good places to eat and drink.
People are very nice as well. Obviously there are trashy parts, but overall I think it's not bad at all.
Thoughts?

Personally I was happy to see outlying areas such as Tarp Springs and Dunedin.

In addition to Tarpon Springs and Dunedin, one of the best beaches in the US is a few miles west of TPA airport on route 60...Clearwater Beach. Adjacent is Clearwater Marina. From there, head south on Gulf Blvd and exploreTreasure Island and John's Pass. On March 22/23, MacDill AFB will be having its annual Airfest. The USAF Thunderbirds are scheduled. From downtown Tampa, drive south along Bayshore Blvd, see the aforementioned mansions, and marvel at the longest unbroken sidewalk in the world. Be sure to have lunch/dinner at The Colonnade restaurant.

I'll second the comment above about Gulf Blvd and Treasure Island.
Tampa also has a very nice airport!
But with the sunny weather and nice beaches in the area, it is surprising how many are so depressed...

Second best overall metro in Florida. Even though on my personal places to live I would put it as number 3 in Florida. I've never spent much time there but it has plenty to do and having to separate cities in Tampa and St. Pete helps too. A bit too spread out for me though. And I prefer the Atlantic waters.

Great place for bridges, operational and not, recreational night fishing also.
