Well,,synthetic oil will (marginally) increase your mileage and (marginally) increase your horsepower and (marginally) increase torque. But I don't know....62 miles per gallon is pretty impressive in my book. But you may have to make several trips hauling 3,700 lbs. of ten-foot long 5X5's home up the hill

2000 Altima which will soon be replaced. might treat to some synthetic soon.

8L/100km is just 29-30 miles/gallon

I think i got a very well run in engine, my polo before used about 6L/100km and had basically the same 1,05L 45HP engine, the 1991 needed less than 17s 0-100km/h, by spec it should have been 19.5 and topped out 160km/h instead of 143km/h by the book.
And i have a very calm driving style.....

No. 1 US mpg = 1.2 UK mpg. So he only thinks he's hell of a lot more efficient.
This is the sad part. The same fuel economy can be described by two different numbers with the same unit. But metric units are bad

Personally I like the SI units but doubt we'll start using them in my lifetime. Can you picture the 'quality' political discourse that a push toward the metric system would generate in the US!!? The internet would come off its mountings LOL

Canadians shouldn't be so quick to talk. Sure, you guys use liters and kilometers, but you still use plenty of feet, inches and pounds. My putative mother-in-law still knows F better than C.

Funnily I do know the difference which is why my current 4.5l/100km is 52mpg(US) and 62mpg(UK). Our 2001 diesel scudo van even managed 5l/100km 47 mpg(US) 56mpg(UK) over 1000km mostly autoroute with a full 750kg payload and consumes only a little more for conventional day-to-day use more lightly loaded.

On the plus side it means that our pints are bigger than yours.

And I definitely love the British pint. Only a few bars here in the US will pour a real pint. Most that sell a "pint" are selling you 16 oz.

BTW, that's another funny Canadian thing. They pour beer in British (20 oz) pints.

Old habits die hard, therefore may people use the old units that are illegal for many years. And many people, including young ones, use C for air temperature and F for water temperature.

If we're lucky. Many new glasses are half liter now. Another funny fact is that our beer bottles hold 12 imperial fluid ounces - 341 ml, but we use American cans that hold 12 US fluid ounces - 355 ml.

Yes, diesel engines from that era were very economical. Won't happen now due to current ecology requirements.

The last diesel volvo v40 is rated at 71 mpg (US mpg which means 3,3L/100km). And we're talking 190hp, a more than respectable figure.

And where is this figure coming from? Isn't it, by any chance, a calculation from the CO2 emmision figure?

Yes. Every 15000km which is what the owner's manuals for my latest two cars recommended. I've being doing that since 2003. Never had a problem. The first one was totalled in perfect condition at 83000km with lots of life still in it if it weren't for an unfortunate flood .

Nope it's 177hp, I dislike these over inflated MPG numbers, in real world driving nobody can get close to them, the EU test cycle is a joke and in real need of being revised.

3.3l/100km seems perfectly feasible for a modern engine in ideal driving conditions. I know a few people who routinely get 4l/100km in 'real world driving' with such high-tech top of the range beasts as the 2006 vw polo.

I had a petrol Audi A1 for a weekend, in over 500km of driving I got 6.7l/100km, this is with the latest 1.4 TFSi engine. To get 3.3 you'd have to have a very light foot and never approach a motorway or highway.

CO2 figure seems to be 84g per km, which is slightly better than a Prius.

Now regarding the fuel cycle, my Mondeo gets just slightly worse mileage than claimed, and I don't generally care much about fuel efficiency when driving.

As I said our (very) old scudo averages just over 5l/100km including autoroute. My 2002 206 estate averages 5 with kayaks on the roof and below without. Maybe you got unlucky.

You can already get S & V 60's with the drive-e diesels.
