Non-Av Pic Thread Q2 2014

Wed Apr 02, 2014 6:15 am

Happy April Fools day!

Anyway, haven't done much non-av photography recently. Did snap this photo in between airplanes, and was quite happy with it:

http://www.vksphoto.com/Photography/Random/i-PGJCqF6/0/X2/IMG_4065-X2.jpg

And then this guy was crawling around my apartment building's garage about an hour ago. It was a little freaky for me, because I have a growing irrational fear of insects (even if they're harmless), and this thing is huge. But I still have to take photos of them despite the fear....Anyway, apparently it's known as a Jerusalem Cricket, despite not living in Israel, and not being an actual cricket:

Nice pics again guys, keep 'em coming!

In the mean time, I've visited the UK again, this time we included a trip to Cambridge. Very beautiful city, but I will show some photos of that later. First I'd like to share a few photos that I took during our visit to the American military cemetary that is located just outside Cambridge.

Edit: why can't I embed/HTML link from Flickr anymore :/

Finally managed to figure out how to post photos using a Flickr link. Below are a few photos from the Madingly American Cemetary just outside Cambridge (UK).

And one type of photo that I saw in the moment and wanted to experiment a bit with. Note that the subject in the photo is smoking a vapor pen and not actually a cigarette.

I'll post some more photos of Cambridge at a later point in time.

Specifically it's Laurel Beach, just outside Milford CT, to the west of New Haven. About 70 miles east of JFK.

We rent a holiday house there and it's a couple of minute's walk from the beach, so it's great to get out and about.

More pics

A Piping Plover, a protected species, being hard to see on the beach. There was a fenced off area to protect them and a few of them wandering around. You only saw them if they moved.

Still going through the 1100+ photos taken over the last 2 weekends. However, the below are the results of me using the "panorama" feature on my camera for the 1st time.

This one is Temple Newsam near Leeds

Nice contrast in textures too, between the beach and the clouds!

Haven't taken many non-av shots at all recently, but here are a couple:

Ben (left) and Clyde (friend's dog that we are currently dogsitting):

http://www.vksphoto.com/Pets/Ben/i-NJLTbqz/0/XL/IMG_5737-XL.jpg

This isn't a terribly great composition, but I'm happy with it given that there were 3 separate lighting conditions - indoors (used a flash), the balcony (in the shade, so comparatively dark), and the sunlit background:

And lastly, I've been spotted:

Well spotted, although it's actually a blend of HDR and normal photography. While HDR can be amazing, you can't get away from the fact that it is gimmicky, so a blend of the two can be great for revealing detail in the shadows.

You've been playing with that hdr again. The last one feels more like a painting than a photograph.

From a walk in the woods last weekend.

A couple of months ago this was bare earth and tree trunks

Bluebells in a sunny patch

There were swarms of insects flying racetracks back and forth above the stream in the sunshine and with an exposure of 1/20s they look slightly different.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/oly720man/insects.jpg

A few years ago I remember seeing a website where someone had videoed near a cave at dusk and saw the same sort of thing on the video and was convinced it was some new type of animal like a flying worm with rippling wings along the length of its body.

Nice to hear Klaus, we appreciate everyone's interest! I think the nice thing about this thread is that it's one of the few bicker-free zones on a.net. A little oasis of tranquility in these forums . . .

I have no new pics this week as I've been busy organising a surprise birthday party for myself, so I'm plundering the holiday folder one more time:

A holiday in Northumbria last week, so some photos...

Bamburgh Castle

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/oly720man/bamburgh2.jpg

Walking the dog on an empty beach, North of Lindisfarne/Holy Island

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/oly720man/dogwalk.jpg

St Cuthbert's Cave which is more like an overhang.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/oly720man/stcuthbert.jpg

Someone's cave art

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/oly720man/caveart.jpg

Went on a boat trip to Coquet Island where lots of puffins live. Trying to photograph them from a moving boat was a challenge

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/oly720man/puffins.jpg

A wave breaking. I could watch the sea all day.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/oly720man/wave1.jpg

Another wave

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/oly720man/wave2.jpg

On the way back we took the scenic route north of the border and passed St Mary's Loch between Selkirk and Moffat, a rest stop for many weekend bikers it seemed.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/oly720man/loch.jpg

Further down the road was the Grey Mare's Tail, a waterfall

And living in the vicinity were some wild goats, one of which was ruminating overlooking the stream

We all seem to be going down the nature road, no doubt helped by the northern hemisphere summer. I've pics of some cattle, an insect, some nesting birds and wildflowers, all taken at a couple of locations around my native County Wicklow, this week:

This week it's some singing by the sea, summer in the garden, a backflip and the end of the road for a bluebottle:

Out for a bike ride this afternoon to Moses Gate park near Bolton and some iphone photos.

Water lilies on one of the lakes

One of a number of canals in the area that have been long since abandoned. A century ago there were probably barges moving goods or coal this way.

A giant hogweed growing in an abandoned bridge over the river Irwell. It was about 10ft tall

In Swedish water lilies are called Näckrosor, which basically means Neck roses.

Anyway here are some pics from our garden:

Is that something like a weekend cottage away from the big city?

Interesting. Appropriate for a flower on a long stalk.

Well sort of nowadays but that was not it's original purpose.

The cottage is what we call a torp.

There are many different types of Torp such as worker torp or solider torp.

Our cottage was built in the beginning of the 19th century so it is slightly older then 200 years.

The same in lots of places, I expect. Poor farmers left the countryside for the city and, more recently, richer people go back to the countryside and take over the original farmers' cottages. Over here there are occasional disparaging articles about "townies" moaning about the countryside.... cocks crowing at 5am, cow manure on the roads, dead animals in shop windows, all the things you don't get in the city. In some places over here, villages are almost weekend villages because all the cottages are weekend/holiday cottages, so the shops/pubs have to close because there's nobody there all week. And because the houses/cottages are so desirable they're unaffordable for the locals.
