In the US

1. ´91 Geo Metro (don´t laugh)
2. ´00 Plymouth Neon

In Europe (well, the UK)

1. ´90 Renault 19 (This was a very basic 3 door hatch)
2. ´93 Renault 19 (This was a very basic 5 door hatch)
3. ´94 Renault 19 (This was a more luxurious 5 door hatch)
4. ´99 Nissan Almera (This was a very luxurious 5 door hatch)

I live in Barcelona now and do not require a car, too much hassle, although I do miss driving a lot

Just renewed my driving license for the second time, which means I have had it now for 20 years.
But this time I changed it from italian to german

In 20 years I owned very few cars

1998 Opel Corsa 1.0 (second series)
2001 Lancia Y 1.2 LX (second series)
2006 Alfa 147 1.9JTD (Company Car)

Then I moved from Rome to Germany, where I do not need a car because of the excellet public transport network and the possibility of using bikes.
If and when I need a car, I usually take a taxi or rent one.
I love not owning a car. It´s just an enourmous expense and source of troubles.

In the first 15 years of driving I could only afford used cars:
VW Beetle (crashed)
Autobianchi A112 (rustbucket, but a better Go-Cart than a Mini!)
Lancia Delta 1500 (a rustbucket of the first series)
Lancia HPE 2000 (I loved that one!)
1991: 1988 Alfa Romeo 164 (had an accident)

Since the early 90s I bought new or almost new cars, so I keep them for long periods not to waste money.
1993: 1993 Alfa Romeo 164 (wonderful car!)
2000: 2000 Alfa Romeo 166 (loved it in the longterm, hard to part with)
2011: 1999 Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon

But as I dont have to drive much anymore the next car will be secondhand again. Either again a Alfa Romeo (a classic 166V6 perhaps), or a Jaguar. As you can see I prefer Italian cars, and I am very much brand-minded if it comes to cars. But I love British luxury brands just as much.

Hmmm.

Interesting exercise; let us see if I can recall all.

1961 Chevrolet Impala Sport Sedan, 348 with Turboglide (miss that one!)
1969 Renault 10
1971 Renault 10 (I know, glutton for punishment - sold that one for $10.00)
1974 Chevrolet Vega GT (hold the jokes, it was a good car)
1973 Ford F100 pickup (great truck)
1973 Honda Civic (junk - rusted if you said the word, "moisture" within earshot; they got better, or so I've heard   )
1986 Ford LTD
1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado Cabriolet (still have this one!)
1986 Audi 4000S (great little buggy)
1989 Jeep Cherokee (unstoppable)
1990 Cadillac Sedan Deville (fast, quiet, big, comfy, never ever broke, invisible to police; drove to 200k miles, sold running well)
1993 Audi 100S (like a tank)
2001 Cadillac Deville (Northstar - fast, big, comfy, amazing fuel economy)
2003 Chevrolet Suburban (still have it, bulletproof reliability)
2003 VW Jetta Turbo (tight as a drum, engineered for fun and frequent failure)

Leaving out my wife's cars.

Yes and No. I would say that is very much depending on how deep your pockets are. If you have some money, owning (nice) cars is just a great way to spend your Euros or dollars. If you have average money or less, its a money drain and you spend it on something not really interesting so someone might well make a decision as you did without regrets. For most people a car will be the most expensive thing they ever buy beside a house (and for many THE most expensive thing), so you better get it right and look for one that is some fun and makes you a bit proud to own.

1. 71 Ford Pinto (then and always, old junk)
2. 74 Plymouth Duster (then old junk, now kewl hipster car!)
3. 79 Celica GT (great car, should have taken better care of it)
4. 86 Ford Thunderbird (nice highway cruiser, didn't keep it too long)
5. 90 Mazda 626 (first new car, ran for 20+ years)
6. 96 Ford Explorer (took me places I never knew I'd go)
7. 06 BMW 330i (so much fun to drive!)

Plenty of fun coming up with the list. I had fun in all of them, even the very first one, the Ford Pinto, which was a total junker.

Two, two cars. I still have the first car I bought in 2004 when I finished grad school and got my first real job.

1) 2002 Mazda 626
2) 2011 Nissan Versa hatchback -- technically this is my partner's car. Though technically my name is also on the note and registration, so technically I can count it.

Been looking at replacing my car for a while now but haven't done so. 12 years old, 120,000 miles with some considerable cosmetic imperfections. But still runs well and perfectly reliable. I'll probably only keep it 2-3 years more max.

Especially when I was living in Florida in the 1980's I bought and flipped quite a few old creampuffs I got from elderly folks. Some I meant to keep I ended up flipping. Some I meant to flip I ended up keeping. Anyway, as you can see, I've always had a love affair with cars.

I've had my license for about 12 years now, and in that time I've owned zero cars, rented one (well, two if you count a moving truck), and driven maybe 10 or so cars either that I've borrowed, or just driven with the owner (usually a relative) in the car or do they didn't have to go anywhere.

Overall, I probably drive three or four times per year.
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.

A substantial engineering flaw with these! VW may have warranty relief for you, though may be too late. Also affects Jettas, though they deny it.

I tend to drive my cars until the wheels fall off:

1979 Camaro Z28, bought used
1988 Jeep Cherokee
198? Isuzu pick-up (wife's, when we got married)
1996 Chrysler Sebring Convertible (wife)
1997 Ford Explorer
2003 Chrysler Sebring Sedan (wife, after first kid born)
2009 Ford Flex
2011 Ford Edge (wife, after she wrecked the Sebring)

I expect to drive the Flex another 3 - 5 years and the wife will pass the Edge to my daughter in 5 years.

Ford Prefect

As a big Douglas Adams fan, it made me smile to see this on someone's list.

Anyway, I've had my license for about 16 years (wow!), and I've only owned two cars:

1. 2000 Honda Civic EX with manual transmission (bought it from my dad in 2006 or so).
2. 2010 Mazda 3 S Sport with manual transmission (bought it after the Civic was totaled in 2010).

Other cars driven (mostly owned by my parents) include a ~1991 Plymouth Grand Voyager, a 1995 Dodge Intrepid (with the 3.5 liter engine), a ~1995 Buick Century, and a 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager.

And, of course, I can't ever forget the late '80s Plymouth Reliant. I took my driver's test in that car, because it was damn near impossible to do anything stupid or crazy in it.

1972 Chevy Caprice (Had many problems with this car)
1976 Chevy Corvette (Typical Corvette problems)
1985 Chevy Corvette (This one was a little better)

I'd say probably close to a thousand. Unfortunately, they're all of the Matchbox and Hot Wheels varieties.

Good car! I had a friend with one that lasted practically forever! He was good about changing the oil and tuning it, cleaning the carb.etc. It wasn't too maxed-out. PS,PB,Auto,Air,Am-Fm. He must have put over 200K on that thing! I've only had one car in my life I've done that with and it was a secondary car at that!

Cool. When was that? The Shadow is my childhood dream car. I have friends who own them (and the twin from Bentley) so sometimes I am lucky to drive in one from time to time. Maybe I´ll buy one one day too. The Spur is not so nice from the outside, but inside even prettier than the Shadow. How do you say they compare from the view of the owner?

Hmmmm...

1969 Dodge Dart (learning experience in how not to buy a used car! lasted 6 months)
1972 Dodge Coronet (bought from the parents, I used it the last 2-3 years of its life)
1980 Dodge Omni (first new car, loved it, high maint though)
1988 Dodge Shadow (ugh) I wrecked this one (only wreck I've been in) and drove an in-law's car for a year
1995 Dodge Neon (fun to drive, put lots of miles on it)
2001 Volvo S40 (my favorite of all, I think)
2013 Prius C for commuting to the gym

and on the "family car" side of the house:
197x Volare wagon, I forget the model year, maybe '78, bought used. what a POS!
1986 Dodge Caravan with the Mitsu 2.6L; car was nice, engine not so much
1990 Dodge Caravan with the 2.5L. Those were of course the kid years.
1998 (?) VW Passat bought used (off-lease), wife loved it, (adult) kid finished it off
2008 Prius, wife loves it, unexpectedly good hauler

Lots of Dodge's going on there ... the minivans were great kid haulers, and I enjoyed the Omni and Neon. Sometime in the late 90's I test drove an old used Omni as a possible kid's car. The thing was falling apart and had terrifying brakes but it still put a smile on my face for being lightweight and tossable. (I didn't buy it, it was unsafe beyond salvage without a major rebuild.) Both the Prii are more enjoyable to drive than their reputation would have it, you just have to be unafraid to stomp on the pedal, and I certainly don't mind getting 45+ mpg (50+ in the C).

1. 1982 Ford Laser Ghia (1999-2000)
2. 1989 Ford Falcon GL (2000-2007)
3. 2005 Ford Fairmont (2006-present)

I got my licence in 1999, so in just over 15 years of driving, I've only ever had three cars. The reason for that is that I get sentimentally attached to cars (or anything I own, for that matter), so selling a car that I have owned and loved for years is a painful experience that I'd rather not go through if I didn't have to.

That being said, I've got my eye on the all new Ford Mondeo. It should arrive in Australia some time early next year, which should give me some time to think about whether I want to get a new car. If I do get one, I'll only settle for the top of the range Titanium Ecoboost variant, otherwise I'd rather keep my Fairmont.

Did yours have the TH-2004R transmission? My 84 did and it made an underpowered car even worse. I had a buddy with a 83 Buick LeSabre, with a THM-350, teamed with the Olds 307 and it was a much better car.

Really? Those thing usually ran forever. The car usually rotted apart around the bullet proof engine and transmission.

In my opinion the 1980 is the only good one of the 1980s.

When was that?
Quoting na (Reply 33):
. How do you say they compare

Let me say, right off, I only bought and flipped these cars to make some fast money. I flipped these Shadows in Florida in the 1980's and in those days I was working full-time in the funeral business. So I had garages in which to park them until I found them a new owner, but taking them out for a spin tended to make me a bit nervous. I did not want an insurance claim I can tell you that! And parking lot dings were a no no as well!

The 1970 had great presence and styling IMO. It stood high and was very comfortable to drive. It felt as though it had early 1960's technology, though, and personally I thought it would have benefited from some of Cadillac's gadgetry. I do not recall it handling as well as I thought it would. To it's credit it did have Cadillac's auto tranny and it also had an automatic leveling system---that was hydraulic---it worked well and I sure didn't want it to go out when I had it.

The Shadow II handled better especially cornering and it had the dual-level air conditioning----a big plus in the Florida market. It was easier for me to sell than the '70 was.

To my surprise I loved the Spur III. It was as though RR had finally come abreast with the competition in the luxury market. It handled very well for it's size and weight and it was very powerful. Acceleration was like it was limitless.

Driving them under threat of a possible expensive repair issue caused me to move these fine cars along as quickly as possible. It did, however, afford me the experience of driving some fine motorcars. I don't regret a thing and made good money from them.

Quoting falstaff (Reply 36):

I do not recall specifics on that car other than that as you mentioned I thought it was strange to drive an underpowered Ninety-Eight! (I'm sure it had a four-speed w/overdrive) Especially after the 1970 Ninety-Eight that was a rocket   ! (It handled great in a straight-line, too   )

Quoting falstaff (Reply 36):
In my opinion the 1980 is the only good one of the 1980s.

Well, I liked the styling---especially the higher roof-line----but it really felt under powered compared to the previous 425 powered cars. It rode great though and I kept this car for a while. The later 80's Broughams were even more under powered and I did not care for that at all. Under powered was not something I had become accustomed to in a Cadillac! They finally put a 5.7 liter in the last of that Brougham body style like about 1990 I believe, 1991,1992. Those were much better but, that body style was old. I wasn't thrilled about the styling of the 1993 Brougham but once you sat in it and drove it it was a great redesign! Finally, after all those years it had decent power again!

There was an embalming chemical salesman I knew back then that had a (Olds) Diesel V-8 in his '79 Fleetwood Brougham. It was that wonderful "Western Saddle Firemist" with a natural leather interior and matching vinyl top. This guy put ridiculous mileage on this vehicle and called on clients all over the deep-south. He religiously had the car serviced at the Cadillac dealer and followed the maintenance by the book.
For all the "horror" stories of the Diesel V-8 in Cadillacs, this guy NEVER had the first problem and traded this car with over 200K on the odometer! I was with him when he traded it and the salesmen at Capital Cadillac were floored! Of course, they offered him almost nothing on the trade and I kept my mouth shut as I didn't want it either! I'm sure we all thought we would find it upside-down in the driveway with it's legs to the air before we could re-sell it!

The 1980 368 V-8 was a lot better than the HT-4100 and the 5.0 liter Olds V-8. That being said they all were sad, compared to the 425 cars. Did you ever drive the 81 DeVille, with the V-6, it made you long for the power of the HT-4100   I had a friend who had one and it was terrible!

Yes. This chick I knew had a "plain Jane" Coupe de Ville with a 6 in it. Lame is an understatement. It didn't even sound right. (A Cadillac without a 472 doesn't sound right to me anyway!). I don't think it would have improved the fuel mileage very much since the engine seemed to strain to pull the weight.

Not too long ago I drove a Hennessey Performance CTS-V. If you can you should drive one. It is a ROCKET   .
Like no other Cadillac I have ever driven!

Quoting falstaff (Reply 38):

Well, there you go, then. Those were great "cruisers". Just dangerous in the "on ramp"!

Creature of habit much?

My 2000 Honda has 101,000 miles on it. I walk to work, so I only use it on the weekends, if that. However, I have my eye on the Jeep Cheeroke (not the Grand Cheeroke)!

Indeed. In this case, the previous owner had somehow managed to bust or crack a valve seal in #6 cylinder. I noticed that the oil was awfully dirty when I looked at the car, not realizing that it was the sawdust the seller put in to suppress the smoking. Actually, it burned clean oil so fast (about 50 miles to the quart) that it didn't smoke much. I used to let it go for about 200-250 miles (thus again proving the relative indestructibility of that Slant Six), and then refill it.

What killed the car was when it went up on a lift for a state inspection and the frame members crushed from being rusted to nothing. There was nothing left to fix.

Oh, and the gas tank was leaking too, and a rubber isolation piece was saturated. The junkyard refused to take the car because it was a fire hazard! We got someone to rip the rubber out just so I could junk the thing.

Did yours have the squeeze-bulb lumbar adjust in the seat?
That has to be the most awkward looking car feature I've ever seen!
It was a long, black plastic tube with a large head. You had to reach in between your legs, pull it from under the seat and start squeezing on it to inflate the seatback for lumbar support.
I wonder how many first dates were ruined due to that feature.

I have real class, I know...

I got my license in 2009, so five years. I'm about to buy my second car.

My first was a 2002 Daihatsu Sirion, and I'm about to get a ... 1998 Daihatsu Sirion. Beyond being 4 years older, the new wheels won't have power steering, but will be automatic rather than stick shift.
