Normandy Celebrations- Where Did They All Park The
I was just thinking, after watching the ceremonies today, about where did all the leaders park their transports. I plan to visit there soon, but can't picture an airport large enough to handle them all. Possible Air Force bases? I'm not going to get political, but what was the German head of state doing there? I do know there is a German cementary there and that's ok too. I am into the fact the war is long gone and we move on. It would be interesting to see a picture of a line up of all the aircraft parked next to each other.

CFR only has a runway of 1900m (6234ft) so other than landing at Paris my bet would have been on the closest French Airbase in Evreux and has a 2990m (9810ft) runway which should be sufficient enough for Air Force 1.
As for Angela Merkel, she was invited and has every right to pay her respects, we should not forget that everyday Germans were victims of Nazi rule too.

If I were to guess; Air Force 1 is across the English Channel possibly at RAF Mildenhall. I saw some Air Mobiility Command movement headed that way earlier this week. Obama is flying around the Normandy coast in Marine 1.
As I recall Paris is not too far away from Normandy I suppose some could have parked at CDG.

Saw images of AF1 arriving in CDG earlier this week, so it's probably there.

Yes Hitler did win a Legal Election by popular vote. It was after that that he started his plan for dictatorship rule. then four years later he started his take over of other countries. But that is another subject for another time and place. Let us remember the Men that died there, there were to many that did.

No Sir, he wrote "Mein Kmapf" in the eraly 20s and everything he did is written in there. Problem is that no one read it and those who did did not believe that he would realize his crude theories.
As a matter of fact they started with that the evening of the election. The legal Basics for the dictatorship passed through legislation once the Opposition was in prison and Germany ceased to be a Democracy on the day of the elections.
The criminal gtang took over immediately and the German People had Little Chance to oppose. After 70 years, the German Chancellor has every right to participate in the ceremonies, we hjave been liberated as well.
I thank America and the allies for D day and the liberation of Europe. It is not only that the end of the war started on June 6 1944 , it was the end of the National Socialists as well and the side effect was that Stalin was prevented to run thorugh to the North Sea and the channel.
The whole of Western Euripe wouldnot have been lliberated but simply seen the Transfer of one brutal Regime to another.

There were also a lot of street battles between militias of the various parties before the election, I doubt we would call such ambiance for an election "fair" today.

There were also a lot of Germans involved in the invasion, on the Allied side, in British and American uniforms. Every British battalion had several Germans attached as trnslators, guides, prisoner interrogators and intelligence specialists.
No.3 Troop 10th Interallied Commando consisted of mostly Jewish refugees from Axis countries, though these special forces soldiers were not fighting as a coherent unit, but were seconded to other units to carry out special jobs like penetrating the German lines for reconnaisance and to gather intelligence. They also fought as light infantry when the Germans counterattacked. It is estimated that more than 10,000 Germans fought in the British forces alone, about the same number as the Dutch exile Priness Irene Brigade, but for political reasons it was decided not to create a British armed German exile army. There were also Italians, Austrians and Hungarians fighting in British uniform. The French used a large contigent of Spanish civil war veterans, who were fiorced to flee their homeland after Franco's victory. Many of these staunch anti-fascists served in the 13th Demibrigade of the French Foreign Legion.
Then most people forget that there were alsolarge Dutch, Belgian, Polish and Czech contigents involved in this invasion, not to forget exiled naval units from countries like Norway.

...exactly, between the national socialists and the communists. Both have nothing to do with Democracy. We can call it a big luck that the US entered WW2 and made D Day possible and thus kept at least a good part of western europe free. and since 25 years that part is greater now.
Without the US the Soviet emprire would have extended to the North Sea and I'm not sure if Britain would have been included ore remained a spearhead of freedom.
We can all be lucky that history went that way and we should think about that next time we bash the US for similar ventures that went wrong. It is up to the People and the societies to accept liberty and freedom and obviously neither Iraq nor Afghanistan are ready. Hopefully the Ukrainian and Russian People will be

It was nice to see Merkel get a warm reception at the events, quite right too, as a leader she embodies modern Germany, as far apart from the Nazi as can be imagined.
She also grew up under repressive regime in the East.
Reading Antony Beevor's book on Normandy, I was surprised to learn that quite a few of the Atlantic Wall defenders were in fact captured Poles and Russians forced into service, though many were not trusted with being front line infantry most were happy to surrender once the invasion got under way.

No it was Orly. A friend was about to take off for Geneva right after Air Force One had landed.
He got to see Air Force One on the tarmac from his seat after they had landed.
On D Day Air Force One had gone to Caen Carpiquet after which the POTUS was ferried by helicopter. A big one.
I guess they must have brought it back to Orly as the POTUS was invited to a State dinner at the Elysée Palace with Her Majesty, mastered by Guillaume Gomez the Elysée Chef des Cuisines assisted by Cédric and Lionel his sous-chefs and Pastry Chef Régis.

Her Majesty's flight left from the Villacoublay Air Force Base after the Saturday morning welcome receptions at the City Hall and nearby Flower Market in Paris.
I am not sure if the other royal party members had joined the same flight or not.
They usually keep the big jets at Orly. which is closer into the city than CDG. I have seen many an official flight there among which the two Japanese 747-400s, the Bahrain Royal 747SP, the Brunei Royal 747-400 and others.
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

I was looking at a French periodical's website today.
This picture of Queen Elizabeth II visiting the flower market in the rain attracted my attention.
The woman in white walking along with the Queen is Anne Hidalgo, the newly elected Mayor of Paris. She has a butler/bodyguard by her side carrying her umbrella and protecting her from the rain while Her Majesty has to carry her own umbrella with her right hand while holding her black purse in the other hand.
President Hollande is walking to the right of the Queen with a seemingly amused look. Note that Mr. Hollande does not have an umbrella neither is there anyone holding one to protect him from the rain.
The Queen was the highest ranking official guest during the D Day commemoration. The time she spent in Paris was part of a State visit.
I find it quite disrespectful that her invit-ors French President François Hollande and Mayor of Paris Mrs Hidalgo (or their protocolar services) did not arrange for a butler/bodyguard to hold the Queen's umbrella while Mrs Hidalgo had her own helper to protect her from the rain.
and then there is the mishap at Friday evening's French Presidential palace State Dinner which you can see in the video. Does not need translation. Just look and see what is happening at the dinner table.
