Things America Got Right.

Sat Jul 26, 2014 4:46 am

This thread is intended to be sarcastic and funny. Not serious and hateful.

That said, the two things that come to my mind are the 747 and the DeLorean.

What do you think? Yay 'Murica!

Good luck getting our European friends involved in this one.

In all seriousness, for all the negative things that have come from this country, plenty of good has, as well.

One that came to my head: Film-making

DeLorean

The DeLorean was built in Ireland is and is one of the absolute worst cars of all time, right up there with the Trabant, Pacer, and Yugo. You're talking about a car that cost the equivalent of $64,000 and had 130 horsepower. An 8.8 second 0-60 time wasn't fast even when it was new.

The only reason anyone thinks the DeLorean was anything approaching a decent car is because of Back to the Future, and they could have used literally any distinctive looking car in that movie. The DeLorean wasn't even the coolest car in that movie, the black Hilux is the winner there.

Frankly it's a shame people think of the DeLorean as a cool '80s car before other, legitimately good, cars like the Audi Quattro and Ruf CTR.

I think the makers of Back to the Future were well aware of the DeLorean's ridiculousness; and that contributed to the comedic irony of Doc turning it into a genuine technological marvel.

Having orderly (not always) elections and transfers of government executive power.
Not having hereditary royalty as heads of state (excepting Adams, Roosevelt, Bush and possibly Clinton families).
So much freedom of speech that Neo-Nazis, Westboro Church, anti-government militia groups and other extremists can spew their hate with few legal restrictions.
Cheap gasoline (due to low taxes)
Our entertainment industry
Freedom of religion (unless an atheist)
Right to have guns
A great health care system (if you have good insurance or rich)
Overall lower taxes, especially on income, than many major countries.

The 'factory' is right off U.S.-59 and the Beltway 8, here in Houston, TX. I've been there a couple of times.

An engineer that I used to work with, knew the owner and my colleague designed a new ECU and fuel injection/MSD control system for the DeLorean - they can retrofit the DeLorean with a much better engine and drivetrain that really helps with the performance, and they use his circuit designs in the new cars when they retrofit them.

The company that we worked for was a specialized electronics/engineering company that also designed industrial computers - I happened to work in the 'fault-tolerant systems' division, but we were used to making special circuit assemblies, wrote our own firmware and microcode for specialized devices, etc.

This was all back in the mid-late 1990s - I still pass by there from time to time when I am in the neighborhood, but I haven't been back to the DeLorean facility since.

Well - interesting bit of trivia, anyway.

Up until about 1970 or so, we were one of the best manufacturers in the world. We built the best ships, planes, cars, rockets, you name it.

We still design the best computers (even if we don't build them) and we lead the world in software and information systems. We have one of the world's two leading aircraft manufacturers. Our cars are good again. We also have a number of other high-tech and industrial offerings, like GE and PW. I'd argue

In a globalized world, the fact that we're still "the best" at at least one thing (computers/IT) is pretty cool.

A few years ago, I flew a redeye from IAD to LAX. I had 40 minutes to hoof it from A Concourse to B to make my flight in IAD, but I made sure to quickly grab a Five Guys burger and fries in A before barely making my flight at B.

Got off the plane in LAX, went to my hotel fell asleep. Woke up and went right to In-and-Out. Burgers in back-to-back meals? Don't care. Worth it.

In-and-Out is good, no doubt. But I have to go with Five Guys if I am given a choice between the two.

Of course, Steak n' Shake beats them both.
