I doubt you live a sheltered life, its just a matter of where you've lived. And the fact that the country is so large is, well, one of the problems with the country, IMO. Most people here would be shocked to hear how many guns I own, so I won't throw that number out there. But the middle section of the country is vastly different from living on the ends of the country in a large city. And that's why a 1 size fits all gun law will never benefit this country.
