IOS8 Release Day

Wed Sep 17, 2014 1:35 pm

So today is the day we Apple plebs get to enjoy a new toy to play.

iOS8 launches today and I am sure the apple servers will be on fire by that time.

If you manage to download and install it on your iDevice, let us know what you think of it.

RE: IOS8 Release Day

Wed Sep 17, 2014 2:34 pm

I´m particularly curious to know how it will perform on an iPad2.
Mine got somewhat slower in the passage from iOS6 to iOS7 and battery life worsened a lot, at least 40% less,
which is not a big deal since I use it almost exclusively at home (so always close to an electric plug).
But I´m afraid iOS8 will cause my iPad2 to become almost useless.
I´ll wait with the upgrade and check people´s reaction to it.
I might decide to stay on iOS7 if results are not good.

Strange. On my iPad 3 and iPhone 4S it had no impact on battery life.

I'm currently downloading iOS 8 to my 5s via OTA. It requires your 5s to have 5.8 GB available space. For me, it's been about an hour since it started downloading iOS 8 and it's been showing "Preparing Update..." for the past 20+ minutes. I'll post more after I'm done playing with it.

I am currently 1 hour into the install.
looks to be about done.

Download took 30 minutes on my Iphone 5

Below is a site to see how fast IOS 8 shows up in the network. Looks to be already penetrating well in the last hour. Up to .85% from .4%. Should be 12-15 % or higher by tomorrow.

Right 8 just popped on my iTunes, doing a backup of the iPhone now, and will install shortly.

Let´s see how fast it goes.

I've been playing with iOS8 for the past hour or so. Visually it's not very different from iOS7 and, so far, there isn't any bugs or apps crashing on my 5s. There were loads of app updates when I opened App Store after the install.   Most importantly, my United app works perfectly.

Yup same here, not much difference from iOS7, just the few extra bits, Health App... don´t even know how to set it up LOL.

I do notice my phone is a bit sluggish, will restart it and see how it goes.

Mine is an iPad2 and I´ve already found a couple of articles that suggest I don´t update to iOS8.
They also suggest not to update the iPhone4S or at least to expect it to work sluggishly, with apps taking up to 50% more time to launch.
I expected that. I won´t update. I´m staying with iOS7.
Not a big loss since much of the new features would not work anyway on the iPad2, which lacks the necessary hardware.

Downloaded today, my iphone 4S is now struggling with it, much slower, you have to swipe several times to get things working and to cap it all off I now get two versions of many of my songs in itunes which takes up more space so less music. I have deleted and resynced itunes still the same problem gurrrr, my first ever apple issue.

My 4S is maybe a little bit slower, but not as slow as when I first installed IOS7. I guess this is the price you pay though for installing software optimized for the latest model on the older hardware. Anyone finding it running slow let the battery drain and then once you recharge it you should notice a boost in the speed. Worked when IOS7 came out.

Updated my iPad3. It was already downloaded so just I have to hit install. So far so good. Not planning to update IP5s as my IP6 on its way.

For IP4S this will be the last major update. Most sites are recommending IP4S users to wait for 8.0.1 or 8.1 to avoid any issues. They are also saying IP4S cannot benefit much with 3.5 inch screen.

So far, I really like IOS 8. The new camera features and message features are absolutely worth it.
I do think it drains the battery a bit faster, but I will only know that when I have it running a bit longer. I may turn on the "Hey Siri" feature, but that will probably cost a few cycles of battery as well.

Quoting Casinterest (Reply 6):

So far it is past 15 % install base . Probably will surpass 50% over the weekend.

I imagine this time around IOS 7 will hold share a bit longer as fewer folks upgrade the IPAD 2 and IPhone 4's.

Using it now...so far I've had the camera crash and it seems to be running rather slow with 4.6G of memory left on the phone

What I am most interested in is the email feature, where you can supposedly toggle between drafts and your inbox. I'll check that out in bit

Upgraded pretty fast after a failed attempt OTA decided to plug into iMac and iTunes and then it was 45 mins. approx.
All ok and then had a load of updates on my Apps to download.

No issues but tonight realised a few bugs with Telegram Messenger. Everything else seems fine. I guess they will roll out an update. British Airways rolled out one this morning and now its possible to add a Widget for up coming flights which is great.

Anyone know how to get rid of the predictive text that comes up in the text area of an SMS? Man is it annoying (to me at least)

There does not appear to be anything in the Messages sections of Settings

thx

Settings -- General -- Keyboards and scroll down and disable Predictive...

So, I have been using iOS8 for 2 days now... and my overall impression is... I am not convinced... yes it has cool features but my phone is sluggish, opening the Facebook app takes ages and some stuff works a bit sketchy, it probably runs better on newer iPhones and iPads.

I am sure apple will iron out some issues and release an update.

Delete it and reinstall it. Facebook is a garbage collector. I have no idea why, but my facebook app was taking something like 350MB of storage. When I deleted it and reinstalled it, it's down to 237.

You can also upgrade by plugging your phone into your computer and using iTunes. Then you don't need to free up space.

I updated my iPhone 5 on Wednesday and besides a few stutters here and there and a couple bugs with certain apps, I'm really enjoying it. At first it doesn't look like much on the surface but when you really dig in there are some really cool, long overdue features. iOS 8 should help me get through the wait to get my hands on the iPhone 6 which I will get once things slow down a bit in a few weeks.

As a T-Mobile user, I only updated because iOS 8 gives my 5S wifi calling. This makes up for T-Mobile's poor indoor network. Now I can actually have a conversation without FaceTime! Otherwise, nothing new and I wouldn't have updated because updates make older phones slower unless for wifi calling.

Phone has no noticeable lag with iOS 8 vs 7. After apps initialize anyway....

Probably an upgrade to a 6 next year for me...

As with previous full-version upgrades, the 8.0 version is supposed to be feature-complete and free of major bugs; Optimization is not the primary concern in the first release of a new main version. It is practically certain that subsequent updates will not only get bugs fixed which have survived so far, but also that they will run smoother and faster, especially on older devices.

Immediately after an upgrade, the system also usually needs to rebuild some information such as the Spotlight search index, which will cause some additional one-off system load, both reducing battery life and remaining performance in the first few hours after the upgrade. But when that's done, the system will settle into its normal routine behaviour with full battery life and performance available again.

I've ugraded my 2.5 years old iPad 3 and it runs iOS 8 quite well, but there are some minor UI glitches every now and then. Nothing major and only occasionally, though. The 8.0.1 will be welcome, but these minor hiccups are no big deal so far.

For my 4S I leave the upgrade decision to its next owner. (S)he may decide to wait for the next update to make the jump, but since the 4S is mostly identical to the iPad 3 processor-wise, I wouldn't anticipate major issues there either.

Try I-tunes, choose an artist.....you'll see the songs OK.
Play a song, for a bit.

Now click another artist....check the songs....they are still the songs of the 1st artist you selected. "The Beatles - Money for Nothing".
Well....on our 4s anyway!

Been using iOS 8 for a full 24 hours now on my iPhone, and honestly I (feel) very little changes, although it is understood that this was not the same upgrade as iOS 7 brought. Health app looks interesting, but as I have a 5, the one feature I wanted the most - the step counter - appears to require manual input.

The Beatles and (I'm assuming here) Dire Straits are both on your iphone?

Looks like a relatively minor issue that beta testing should have caught before release.

Perhaps roll-back to 7.1.2 and hope that they're gone by the release of 8.1?

Is it now back to normal again? Directly after the upgrade it ewas probably still rebuilding its Spotlight index and doing other one-off chores.

On my iPad 3 the keyboard is fine so far.
