56 Cadillac Station Wagon

Sun Oct 26, 2014 7:59 pm

Yes Cadillac made a station wagon before the CTS. This is a rare 56 Cadillac station wagon. A treat for us Cadillac fans.

Here the story

PS: I believe Cadillac made some station wagon in the late 60s to early 70s.

Too bad Cadillac dropped the CTS Wagon.

Cadillac never officially built any station wagons until the BLS - a Saab-derived model not sold in the USA, and the CTS, the first official wagon it ever built for the U.S.

The car referenced above, like all other Cadillac wagons pre-CTS, is a conversion by an outside firm - like Hess & Eisenhardt, which primarily built Hearses and custom flower cars but also made a variety of other specialized conversions. H&E continued to make custom Cadillacs, primarily limousines but also other vehicles, until the late 1980s, and the firm was still in business (work subcontracted, however) until 1992. H&E's work was often factory sanctioned, but not part of the official line. For example you could buy a 1979 H&E Convertible DeVille conversion at the dealer - but it wasn't on sale from Cadillac itself, you ordered the converted car supplied by H&E. Cadillac never made a Convertible DeVille after 1970. H&E's non-limo projects, like this wagon and the Convertible DeVille, were small volume and relatively labor intensive.

The Ghostbusters car was a famous example. As Cargolex said, these are from outfitters / livery converters / hearse manufacturers.

The Ghostbusters car was clearly a 1959 and was converted by miller-meteor.

I never understood the desire for a Cadillac station wagon. Same for a Cadillac (or any other luxury brand) SUV.
For wagons, the Buick Estate Wagon made perfect sense. Same for the Mercury Colony Park and Chrysler Town & Country.
Near luxury brands pull it off better than a luxury car being made to haul a kid's soccer team.

Cargolex is correct about the BLS being the only Cadillac station wagon. The tacky after-market modifications don't count.

Buick and Oldsmobile at GM and Ford with Mercury did make factory station wagons for their largest cars for many years. You also have the Cadillac SUV's (Escalade) of recent years that are pretty much a 'station wagon' as well.

I already said that. 'Large' doesn't necessarily mean luxury. Buck and Mercury were 'near' luxury but not in the same league as Cadillac, Lincoln and Imperial which were luxury.

A fad I still can't understand why such a thing exist. Sure they fill a void once occupied by station wagons but I see them more as pick-up trucks with an enclosed cabin. They share the same platform with pick-up trucks.

I hear you, but such didn't stop Mercury from advertising its top-line Colony Park wagon in the late 60s/early 70s as the Lincoln Continental of wagons.

Well, many of the Cadillac ambulances were combination ambulance/hearses. Most of them were built using a limousine body style with the windows in the rear. Thus they did look like station wagons and that probably explains one of the reasons that the Cadillac based station wagons were not very popular. The Ghostbusters car was in fact a factory built ambulance (as opposed to a combination).
