Hi everyone!
I've seen this little Volvo in last weeks auto show here in São Paulo, Brasil, and I'm absolutely in love with it.
Nowadays my car is a '12 Ford Fusion V6 AWD but the time for a change is coming and I'd really like to have something smaller.
So, what do you guys think of this V40? How about its Cross Country version?

Even though I haven't had the V40 model myself, I did (until last year) own an S80. I loved it! Very reliable, even after racking up 260,000 miles on the clock. A great car overall, hardly had any problems (even with driving approx. 100 miles a day, 5 days a week), just the usual change of tyres etc. I can definitely recommend the Volvo brand from my experience. I'd say get yourself a test drive booked and see what you think!

I just bought an S80 in June. Good to know!!!
As for the V40 I wish they would offer that here. My mother in law likes small cars and I'd love for to drive that instead of the Golf she currently drives. Don't get me wrong we like the Golf, but the Volvo is more reliable and comfortable!

Since my parents died I don't have to drive so much. I've gone from about 20,000 km (12,000 miles) in 2012 down to about 6,000 km (3,750 miles) a year in 2014.
I'd LOVE a Volvo V40 T4 Summum, it is such a beautiful car. However € 35,000.- is a lot of money for just 6,000 km a year. So I got myself a top-of-the-range VW Up instead

Truth be told, the V40 is not a 'small car'. I believe the segment is 'compact' (Golf class), which is above 'small' (Polo class), then 'mini' (VW Up! class) and finally 'micro' (Smart).
Having said that, my choice in that segment would be a Skoda Octavia. Basically a bigger Golf at lower price. If you need a badge, I'd get a BMW 3-series or the new Merc C-class. Volvo's are nice, but maintenance costs can be horrendous - Volvo are known for having some of the most expensive parts for a mass-produced car.

Indeed the V40 is not a small vehicle, but much smaller than what I drive nowadays.

So now I'm looking for a smaller car that offer me as much as my current one. That's why I think the V40 could be the one.

For the cost of a Fusion in Brasil I could buy two here. I'm sure you like the car but y'all get shafted if a Fusion is priced on par with a Mercedes or a BMW. Granted I think those are overpriced to begin with...but nonetheless, here a Fusion is a standard sedan.

Not in this neck of the woods, particularly not Mercedes. If we look at an index of spare costs, Merc is at around 90%, BMW at 105% and Volvo at .... wait for it .... 175%!

It's a sedan and you're looking at a hatchback anyway. I'll just say that I saw a V40 the other day at work, a D2, pretty rare car, but I enjoyed its looks.
Apparently a base D2 costs 25000€ here.
An equivalent Merc would be the A-Klass not the C-Klass, the base 180 CDI is 27000€.
An equivalent BMW would be the 116d 5 doors at about 25500€.
Another contender with amazing looks is the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, I don't know if you get that in Brazil ?

Fair enough, prices are different in different parts of the world. But keep in mind that lower end Mercs and BMWs are sold in Europe that are not sold in the United States (same for Volvo). So here, BMW and Mercedes as a whole are distinctly more upscale than they are in Europe, and cost much more to maintain, and they have a sticker and maintenance premium over Volvo.

I've seen the V40 around and it's a lovely looking car; indeed, virtually all of the Volvos now in production are lovely cars. I used to have an old model S40, which I loved.
I just loved what I called the "Volvo" logic and the comfort of the car. I have a Mazda Xedos 9 now, which is a fine car, but I'd love another Volvo - and the V40 would suit me fine.
