Maho Beach Accommodations
Thinking about a spring break trip to SXM. Would like to stay within walking distance from Maho Beach. Need advice from those who've been there.

The Sonesta Maho Beach Resort is pretty much going to be your only bet. The only other hotel nearby is Caravanserai Beach Resort and by recent information on Trip Advisor may be limited/ hurricane damaged and not honoring reservations... not a good sign...
I've only eaten at the Sonesta, but it is definitely in walking distance...
However if you just want to be at the airport, there is Mary's Boon, right off the airport on a different beach, but long way round to Maho by road. Conflicting info if you can walk from there to Maho via Simpson Bay Beach and road, would be about a mile walk... but again I can't confirm it's possible, maybe someone else can.

Best bet is the Sonesta Maho beach resort, its the nicest place in the vicinity and is now all inclusive too. Theres actually a groupon for it out right now.

I took a trip out there recently and stayed at Baker's Suites on the other side of Simpson Bay from the airport. I just walked the road across the drawbridge and then walked Simpson Bay Beach, up through a neighborhood and came out at Sunset Beach Bar. It's really not a bad walk. You could even take a local shuttle "bus" for $2.50 to just about anywhere.

Closest is the Sonesta Maho which is now opening their new all inclusive resort called the Ocean Point. It is much nicer and newer as well. Caravanserai Beach Resort is now known as Alegria and has just been sold for $14 million and is going a transformation, if you looking for somewhere cheap to sleep, then its not too bad. There is Mary's Boon on Simpson Bay beach as well, its right next to runway as well, so will give a different angle of spotting too.

The Sonesta also offers a very good crew discount for those that are in the industry.

we are staying at the Flamingo, its a 5 minute drive to Maho and Mullet. The only practical advice I can give is check out the cruise ship schedules, if im remembering correctly, Tuesday and Thursday there are 6 ships in port, Maho will be insane those days, but the good news is, they will have to head back to the ship before the majority of the wide bodies come in.

Ocean Point actually has better views of the approach, beach and landing (not to mention the blastoffs on the beach), if you can get a room on the 3rd floor. I stayed there before it was renovated when it was just a second building of the main Sonesta resort, and I would definitely recommend it. The rooms are much bigger too. (They originally tried to put us in the other building, so we saw both rooms.)
Do yourself a favor, though, and get out of the resort and explore the island. The planes are fun, but don't *just* stay on Maho Beach.

All the anoraks stay at the Sonesta, which also has a big casino.
I'm much more partial to the French side of the island. Amazing fresh baked French bread at the little supermarche in Fresh Pond. Great restaurants in Grand Case and Marigot. Much nicer beaches (other than for spotting) and a more relaxed crowd. The whole island takes like an hour to drive around, so its really not a big deal.
BTW - if you go to Sunset Bar, make sure you are spending at least like $40 or bring cash. They have an absurd minimum to use a card.
