What Is Your Time Zone

Sat Dec 20, 2014 11:32 pm

What is your timezone now? I was just on Google Earth and was looking and its crazy how far ahead people are! already it is 12pm in New Zealand, I have not went to bed yet!

Then America is behind us so they are back in time. Totally fascinating and weird how timezones work!

11:31pm now.

Unlike most of the rest of the US, Arizona doesn't observe Daylight Savings, so we stay MST all year round... unless you live on the Navajo Nation.

AWST (Australian Western Standard Time) which is UTC+08:00 (up to September 2005 it was GMT+08:00).

We have actually held four referendums on whether to put the clocks forward an hour each summer: held in 1975. 1984, 1992 and again in 2009. Each referendum was held following a trial period, the last over three years, and each resulted in a majority voting against.

Local time as I write is 10:55.

Notice how most posters from the USA did NOT give a time zone. They gave some local name, which is not a time zone. Time zones have a NUMBER denoting the off set from UTC. [Sorry Pommies GMT, as the time zone basis was discontinued some decades ago]. From UTC+13 to UTC-12 [Is there a UTC-13 time zone? Alaska maybe?

The thing about local time zone names on the World Wide Web is it gives the reader no idea how that time relates to theirs. How does USA Eastern Standard Time relate to Australian Eastern Summer Time? Much more informative to say UTC-5, which I can relate immediately to my UTC+11.

A minor point but gees it really makes things easier for people around the world if everybody uses the internationally recognised time zones.

I live in New Zealand which is obviously the first country to see each new day. I love talking to my friends in other countries on the phone as I always start off with "hello, this is the future speaking, how is the past going?"

Right now as I'm typing its 1am on Monday 22nd and the time in New York is 7am on Sunday 21st

Yeah but that not the way of the USA or the people in it is it? It's what makes us so annoying to much of the world, we just do our own thing as if we exist alone.

From our apparently annoying use of local time zone designations, to the power of the dollar as a global currency even with or ridiculous deficit and debt and lack of monetary control, to still using, quite happily and successfully, the English Standard system of measures for daily life!

And then throw many countries version of our annual "daylight savings time" to really hog up the time part....

Ahh so terrible we are.

I'm in PST which for our global cousins is also known as -8 GMT (but from beginning of the first week in March to the start of November it'll be PDT and -7 GMT    )

Gotta love America!

And since we are an aviation fan site we should all really give our time as such:

My current time is 17:28Z

And how! I have cause to read Amtrak's South West Chief & Sunset Limited timetables during winter, when daylight saving is in force in every state they traverse, except Arizona! I'm used to aircraft arriving before they leave, but trains!!!

Can I just add I live near Sydney, and I LOVE daylight saving! I wish it was like it all year! I especially loved it in the Year 2000 when we had massively extended period of daylight saving due to Sydney hosting the Olympics!
Cheers.

One of 4 time zones with a half hour difference. The other are Iran UTC+3.5, Afghanistan UTC+4.5 and India/Pakistan UTC +5.5. Central Australian is UTC+9.5 but only the Northern Territory is currently on it, South Australia being on Day light saving, hence is at UTC+10.5.

Interestingly NZ is currently at UTC+13 [due to Day light saving] as are the Pacific islands to the NE, which is their normal time, no daylight saving in most tropical countries. But the best/worst is Kiribati at UTC+14!

Wow that's even odder! Now that Newfoundland & Labrador is the one province I assumed they would be in the one time zone, but according to the site mentioned above Newfoundland is UTC-3.5 & Labrador is UTC-4.

That is a great explanation!

UTC+11:00

Here they call our timezone AEDST, Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time. It is 10:45pm on Monday evening 22 December. We've just had our summer solstice.

I just checked Google, it is early Monday morning in Hawaii and it's early Tuesday morning in New Zealand. They are either side of the International Date Line. They are only one hour apart. Gosh, this stuff can be mind bending! I have not crossed the date line yet, I imagine that is worse jet lag than flying to Europe? I find going forward in time easier.

Well it is only an hour difference so there will be no jet lag. Also people always say that California is like 17 hours from Japan or something but really its 8 hours difference or something.

California and Hawaii are closer to Asia than they are to me and they are also less time difference. California is pretty far behind, I was watching a broadcast from there at a civilised hour of 5pm and already it was well past midnight here, its very hard to be awake when they are, It must be very hard for British businesses to trade with California.

Jet lag I do not get going west except if I go back more than 5 hours, 5 hours is easy just stay up longer but coming back its a total disaster.

So no problems for you crossing the dateline because its not many hours as you'd think.

You owe the fact that there are time zones at all to trains. Before railroads existed, most municipalities set their clocks to be noon when the sun was dead overhead, and that was that. Then railroads came along and that was no longer workable.

I imagine you are aware that the whole issue of mapping names to time zone data is a royal pain in the butt, especially given that politicians wake up one day and decide the world would be a better place if daylight savings started a week earlier and ended a week later, etc.

Correct, except that it is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time. Arizona actually did observe DST one year back in the 1960s. The ecomomic impact was significantly negative-so much so that the state never did that again. Out here in the summertime, the number of daylight hours is such that there is no benefit to moving the clock ahead but a lot of economic cost.

In Tunisia it is UTC+1 and here in Saskatchewan it is CST which is UTC-6 and glad SK. has no daylight saving time policy. But i am more often out of SK. and could cross up to 3 time zones per day in Canada or the US.
