More here from RTE :

At least ten people were killed in a shooting at the Paris offices of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

Apparently one shouted "The prophet has been avenged", after the shooting. At least one policeman has been killed when a patrol stumbled across the perpetrators.

President Hollande is on his way to the scene.

Horrible start to the new year in Paris.

At least 11 dead now

It appears to be a terrorist attack. They were armed with kalashnikov, shotgun, rocket launcher.
According to some witnesses, the two terrorists were screaming "allah akbar" !

Religion of peace blah blah, It isnt all of them blah blah... Few nutjobs blah blah. Seems to be happening on such a regular basis now all over the planet perpetrated by one group of folks. Time to wake up call a spade a spade and make a stand.

As long as there are apologists for these gutter dwelling fanatics this will be ongoing.

It is sad and tedious, Easily dealt with if the world wasn't so pc.

RIP folks.

The way we dealt with the communist radicals and e.g. the IRA back in the 1970s-80s. Use the existing laws to the full limits. Lock anybody away who sprouts radical propaganda. If somebody uses violence crack down on them without inhibitions, if necessary kill them.
As our former minister of the interior, Otto Schily, SPD, has said, that anybody who endangers others cannot expect to have the police do their outmost to protect his life. The lives of e.g. hostages come first.
Meaning, you take hostages or kill people, tough sh*t if the police shoots you.

It is time that the likes of Pierre Vogel or other radical Islamist preachers and propagandists will be treated like the members of the IRA, RAF, Red Brigades, Action Directe or Nazi terror groups.
No tolerance to the intolerant!

Jan

Edit to add:

The Islamist leaders here remind me very much of the Neo-Nazi leaders: Being charismatic and ambiguous in their speeches, they can always say that they never incited violence and deem themselves to be virtually untouchable.
It was just some stupid followers who misinterpreted their speeches.
Neo-Nazi leaders did exactly the same in public, appearing to be squeaky clean. It was just some stupid skinheads
who misinterpreted their words when they attacked immigrants.
But it has proven that in private they endorsed such attacks and actually suggested them.
It will be much more difficult to prove the same with the Islamists, since they are a much closer knit group and getting police to infiltrate them is difficult (e.g. the infiltrators will have to be circumcised, which is rare among non-Muslim or Jewish German men).

Stop the scare mongering this is just another isolated independent attack... well that is what the apologists will say!!
Just like Martin Place, Lee Rigby and all the others just an isolated incident... no it isn't and it is time the "religion of peace" cleaned out the pus of hatred festering under it's skin!

Now is the time for this hateful culture to join the 21st century or suffer the consequences....

Religion of peace my ass. Seriously. Muslims NEED TO TAKE A HUGE STAND against this and stop blindly supporting them. The amount of protests against the death of bin Laden?! That's one thing. The Saudi gvt in general? That's another.

Seriously. The middle east needs an enlightenment.

We need a more humane way of dealing with this. I say snipers on roofs. Active threats = bullets to heads. Arming every day citizens.

If I was anywhere working in that office I'd have shot those bastards dead. and multiple times as to render their bodies unrecognizable.

Just off the bat without any effort or deep thought...

How about not tolerating the BS, how about actually deporting the ones not from our countries that are preaching hate hiding behind "human rights". How about not allowing ones fighting in terrorist organizations to return to the country. How about not cowering down to people living in the dark ages. Pandering to people who think a voice in the sky is controlling the planet is nothing more then advocating the destruction of the planet.

Given that the "War on Terror" was the most expensive recruiting campaign probably ever conducted, we do know that the "Kill them all" approach dosn´t work. We do however know that back in those days terrorists where largely handled like the petty criminals that they are, they where under control pretty quickly. All w/o extralegal killings, torture, back sites and secret prisons.

War on Terror is nothing else then nation states applying the mindset of a terrorist to the problem. ISIS, as a de facto state is the first terrorist target worthy of the military attention they get.

In fact, getting nation states to treat their Muslim population differently from their others citizens, that is what ISIS wanst. It gets much easier to make people think in terms of "them" and "us" vs. the host nation, if the host nation does it in the first place.

These guys are not petty criminals and you have no idea what you are blabbering about. They execute an officer with 1 shot from an automatic weapon while running. They are fully trained with a good level of skill.

Of course it was the "war on terror that creates these people" and not the fact these folks are brainwashed from a young age deludedly taking orders from a voice in the sky. I get sick of these stupid excuses people make. It is always the USA or Israel's fault that people are brainwashed by religion isnt it? Get a reality check.

France does deport and/or imprison people on those charges very regularly (and gets called out as not respecting freedom of speech as a result). France also does send troops to fight extremists abroad.

Oddly enough, in the Martin Place incident it emerged that "the bleating imams" had already voiced their concerns to the Australian Federal Police. They had already warned that the man was not a trained preacher and was espousing dangerous ideas that could pose a threat to the peace and security of Australians. The security agencies decided that he wasn't. Why, I don't know but it appears that they were mistaken.

Rather than espousing hatred to Muslims in general, perhaps it is time that we actually start listening to their concerns. When evidence emerges that people are dangerous and a threat to public safety the law should act. Regardless of whether the perpetrators of such violent deeds seek to justify their deeds in the name of religion, they are criminal acts that deserve to be dealt with as firmly as the law allows .

I accept your point, I was speaking in general terms off of the top of my head. Many countries think they can rehabilitate these scum bags that have returned from Syria and reintroduce them into society for example. We know that isis kills any members that try to leave the organization. So how can these people just easily get back to our countries? We shouldnt be sending them to rehab.. we should be rejecting them at the border or locking them away forever. In 5 years when more and more of these guys start randomly attacking us all. Saying I told you so will never have been so mind numbingly sad and stupid all in one.

But the guillotine is a product of a more enlightened society. It was designed at a time when the catchphrase was, "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité,"

Oddly enough I saw the words enscribed above the gates of the Maison d'arrêt de la Santé. Perhaps our assassins could spend some time there to reflect on the meaning of those words.

Well, since Islam is an ideology as well as a religion, I can only see this as yet another attempt by islamic fanatics to enforce thier political views on our free societies by the means of terrorism. It's the same that ISIL is doing, and al-Queda before them.

So this is not isolated, is not simple criminals committing crimes for personal simple gains.
This is a yet another example of the clash between the free world and a violent 7th century ideology.
It will unfortunately go on for a long to time, but I think it's important we recognize it for what it is.

Yeah. Even very international ones since my significant other doesn´t have the language skills to follow German news. So, whats your point, that there currently is a new murder bunch out that formed some sort of state? The only newsworthy part about that is that "the west" does actually seem to care a little bit this time... it may come as a shock to you, but that genocide level murder bunches roaming this planet didn´t get the same airtime ISIS gets today, doesn´t make them less real.

I couldn´t think of a religion that doesn´t qualify as an ideology. When the IRA was still real and big, somehow i didn´t see much in the way of anti-catholic demonstrations in the streets, nor catholic teachers being forbidden of wearing a cross at work though....

Could it have something to do with todays murder bunches just happening to claim fighting for a religion that is foreign to most people living in those countries waging the war on terror and therefore take Islam = Terroristbreader as gospel? After all, in Europe we all worked with, lived next door to or actually where catholics ourselves and therefore new pretty well that religion didn´t have much to do with blowing up pups in Birmingham....

After all, in Europe we all worked with, lived next door to or actually where catholics ourselves and therefore new pretty well that religion didn´t have much to do with blowing up pups in Birmingham....

Late last year a poll was held in the big cities of the Netherlands. 80% of the Islamic youth did not disapprove the methods of IS.

This problem is more widespread than you seem to be (willing to) believe.

12 Shot Dead In Paris Terrorist Attack - Part 1

Wed Jan 07, 2015 2:05 pm

I think that the current crop of Islamists have learned from the Communist terrorists of the 1970s.

Back then the likes of the German Red Army Faction, Brigadi Rossi etc. saw themselves as a revolutionary avantgarde, who had to wake up the sleeping masses.
As such they deliberately attacked government representants, judges, prosecutors and wealthy business people to provoke the government to carry out a disproportionate reaction, which would unmask them as fascists. The inconvnience and intrusion of the government then into the personal lives of the ordinary population should then stirr up this population to a revolution, in which the terrorists would become the leaders.

I think the current crop of Islamists operates in exactly the same mindset: Attack the state, wait for the wooden mallet response by the government against ALL Muslims and then stirr up the now upset Muslims by offering them that the radicals are the only solution.

At the same time they copied from the Neo-Nazi book that the leaders have to stay squeaky clean and not get involved in any dirty business themselves. Let the stupid and expendable idiots do the killing.

Of course, just like IS, Al Quada, Boko Haram, 9/11, Madrid 2004, London 2005, beheadings, stoning, slavery, this has nothing to do with Islam......

See, you do get it.

Or a more classical replay: So, you are saying that Aryan Nations, God’s Army, Holy Spirit Movement and all those others do what they do out of being deeply Christian and living the bible in their every day life? You´d probably really like the Lord’s Resistance Army of Uganda, trying to establish a Christian Version of a sharia state? Oh, most likely with financing from Sudan, a muslim state. So much for terrorism being motivated by religion.

Nah, I am sure someone will come up with a way to classify this as "workplace violence" or some-such. Some people above seem to already be trying.

President Hollande was on the premises merely an hour after the fact (Paris is a small city) and called it terrorism.

Besides, we do have laws (including some voted on in the last few months) made to deal specifically with terrorism and people associated with such acts, people coming back from jihad, etc. There is no doubt that these specific laws apply here.

well, obviously they neither did see it that way

Wow !!!! Is it the best argument you have found ? Seriously ?
If ISIS says that they want to make this world a paradise, will you beleive them ?
With your point of view, i'm pretty sure you will, especially if they told you that they are very friendly with everybody on earth !

Quoting tommy1808 (Reply 35):
So, whats your point, that there currently is a new murder bunch out that formed some sort of state? The only newsworthy part about that is that "the west" does actually seem to care a little bit this time... it may come as a shock to you, but that genocide level murder bunches roaming this planet didn´t get the same airtime ISIS gets today, doesn´t make them less real.

My point is that it's not only a "new murder bunch" as you said ! Neither it is isolated as you said too !

It is terrorism, large scale terrorism, if nothing is done, it will expand more and more and more.
These fanatics were very clear about their intentions and they justify their violence in the name of religion.

Not to forget, as long the Red Army Fraktion stuck to making their actions very political (like setting a department store on fire to protest napalm bombing in Vietnam) they enjoyed a vast support network among pretty normal German citizens. But once they changed to pretty undirected violence, murder and are mostly known for their robberies to support themselves, the support went away very quick.

No point in even debating with people that ignore reality and find other reasons for problems that stare them directly in the face.

RIP to the Victims.

It was bound to happen, eventually, when you stir crap in the middle east and then let your local nutjobs go to and from such places at leisure...

Back during the Weimar Republic in the 1920s there existed a paramilitary organisation made up of WW1 vets, who were fed up with the attempts to destroy the Republic by the Nazis, Communists and Monarchists.
This organisation was made up from followers of parties of the polical centre, ranging from the moderate left Social Democrats through the Liberals to the moderate conservative Zentrumspartei.
They fought both the Communist Red Front militias and the Nazi Stormtroopers.
Maybe we'll need something like this again?

Our system is built on tolerance and freedom of speech, but there can't be any tolerance towards those who want to abolish this system, for which a lot of blood had been spilled over centuries to get it.

Is it just me or is France is getting "way too liberal" in how it treats other religions, specifically Islam?

so, you are saying that you can think completely outside of the culture, ideology and conventions you grew up in? And in case you did miss that, i was talking about what the Nazis defined as terrorists. ... and i am sorry to burst your bubble, but someone thinking terrorist acts can somehow be justified by a just goal are making the same mistake, and think exactly the same way, as those in the West that all of a sudden figured torture is acceptable...

Quoting foxxray (Reply 42):

Nope, but i am sure lots of them will think it is true. Just like many in the West where thinking armed troops, secret prisons and drone strikes would somehow help to spread democracy.

Quoting foxxray (Reply 42):

There is plenty of indications that the ISIS state has plenty of internal trouble and is not even close to forming an area with a homogenous "lets go and kill unbelievers" crowd. They do however have an excellent benefit package for those who join up "Join or get killed right here". And with the amount of money that have access to, i don´t even want to know how many people are just in for the money. That most likely includes people in the west.

How can you get too liberal with a religion in a state with guaranteed freedom of religion?
