Passport Question

My wife had to renew her passport a few weeks ago. We sent in the old passport along with the application. Late last week we received the new passport. However, the package did not include her old passport, which we would like to have as a keepsake since it has quite a few stamps in it.

Will they be returning the old passport? I was under the impression it would have come back with the renewed one.

Thanks for your help.

I've always gotten mine back, but with new security restrictions, who knows? I last renewed in 2008.

From their website:

Applicants will receive their old passport back in the mail. It may be sent separately from the new passport.

I can confirm that old passports and other items used for identification such as birth certificates are returned to you separately from your new passport. We just went through this with my wife when we married and our daughter.

I had my old passport returned to me several weeks after I received my new one.

The reason is because they send the new passport with priority / expedited mail, while the old one is sent via regular mail.

Approval of a passport request and production of a new passport are two distinct functions performed by separate individuals to reduce risks of internal fraud. As a result, supporting documents and new passport are never handled together, and therefore mailed separately.

Old Passport received yesterday -- as others have stated it would.
