Chicago's Willis Tower (ex-Sears Tower) Sold

Wed Mar 18, 2015 1:04 am

Chicago's Willis Tower, originally Sears Tower when completed in 1973, and for quite a while the tallest building in the U.S. (now 2nd tallest), is being sold for $1.3 billion to the Blackstone Group, involved in private equity and various other financial activities. I think they'll be the building's 5th owner.

Wonder whether the name will change again? Willis, an insurance broker, only acquired the naming rights a few years ago, reportedly as part of their agreement to become a tenant.

It's also been the location of United Airlines headquarters and operations center since mid-2013. UA has around 20 floors and is the largest current tenant.

I expect many Chicago residents still call it the Sears Tower.

To my understanding, that is true. I know that I, as a non-Chicago resident, still call it that.

You can't just change the name of an iconic landmark like that. It will never stick. It's Sears Tower.

Anyway, I expect this will have little if any effect on UA. Typically when a building of this type changes ownership, the new owner inherits the existing leases as-is.

Although Blackstone is fitting to the looks since the building is black.

Quite the financial gamble, do they know something we do not?

No matter who owns it or changes it, it will always be the Sears Tower!

When did Sears move out of the building? I don't think they were in there for very long.

No because the Continental fan boys will be begging to slap their name on the building as well.

I was going to school at UIC (UICC back then) when the building was going up - watched it rise floor by floor - it'll always be Sears Tower.

I believe it was the tallest building in the world at the time it opened. I might be mistaken on that, but it was definitely open before the Petronas Towers and they had the crown for a while

You aren't.

For a long time, the Sears was the world's tallest building and yon CN Tower in Toronto was the world's tallest freestanding structure.

Today Burj Khalifa holds both titles.

In my mind it will always be Sears Tower. I think most people feel that way. What the &%$# is a "Willis" anyway?

I expect many New Yorkers, especially older ones, still call this one the Pan Am Building, not the MetLife Building, despite the removal of the Pan Am name after their demise in 1991 (the blue ball/globe logos were on the short ends). MetLife hasn't owned the building since 2005.
