Fiat Abarth Vs. Chevy Sonic RS

Tue Apr 14, 2015 10:09 pm

I will be buying one of these cars tomorrow. Opinions needed, please.

Fiat has more charisma. Faster than the Sonic. But the Fiat is supposedly very unreliable, although the Sonic doesn't get great marks for reliability either. The Sonic has less personality but is reasonably quick and probably easier to live with on a daily basis.

Anyone had any experience with either of these cars?

Thanks very much.

Ford Focus ST for certain. Or a VW Golf GTI, even a slightly used one. Absolutely no to the Abarth, and the Sonic is a GM/Daewoo engineered vehicle. DAEWOO!

Cheaper than the Abarth, about the same price as the Sonic RS (well at MSRP, probably not market price) and better than both in just about every possible way. Combine the charisma of the Abarth with the better practicality of the Sonic.

Here's a better answer for you. The Sonic is 2002 Daewoo trash like the others said, that's been restyled, polished and rolled in glitter. They don't even rate as a "hot hatch" over here.
I like the Fiat, I nearly bought a base model. They are well designed and have character like you said but from all I've read, they are a flawed product in terms of the drive. Heart over head for that one.

I personally own a Fiesta ST, it's brilliant. Just about every review you will find agrees. Main downside is the hard ride, could you live with it? I strongly suggest you test drive one.

Sounds like you are spending some $15K for a new car. You'll be much better off spending that money on a low-milage, 2013 or 2014 certified used car. You'll get a better car.

I applaud you for considering a 2-3 doors car. The Chevrolet Aveo as it's called here is extremely bland for my taste, I'm surprised you're even putting it in competition with the Fiat.

Don't touch the Sonic, but for that price point a lightly used car is a better bang for the buck. The suggestion of a GTI is a good one.

This, I bought a 6 month old CC and Toureg, saved a whole bunch of $$$ on them both, they both had under 10,000 miles and drove like new cars.

I've had the fiat as a hire car a couple of years ago and from what i remember the big tyres made it not go in a straight line on the motorways. I was asked by several people about mileage and the g-box was crap.

The rear seats looked useless but i never tried them

Fehler In Allen Teilen (failure in all parts) we used to call FIAT in Germany. However, lots of that is just image these days, when I bought my Fiat, I actually chose it because it was the no. 2 on the biggest local automotive clubs reliability list in its class that you could buy in new. Directly behind the almost twice the price BMW Mini.

The good thing about a bad image? You have to sell cheap.

Do BMW Minis come with the horrendously expensive maintenance that BMW is known for?

Subaru Impreza. Faster than the Sonic, cheaper than the Fiat (and doesn't require premium gas), more reliable than both, plus AWD. It's also significantly longer - though barely wider than the Sonic - so you can move a lot more stuff. The base model is actually cheaper than both of your options.

Why not, it's a fun car to drive, like a roller skate and reliable as well.

Yeah but buying new is more satisfying than buying second hand. Especially when you order exactly what you want and don't have to compromise and go with the original owners choices.

They do, they are full of very expenisve BMW group electrics.

Amen on that! I got a (2nd hand) Fiat Punto Evo. My first car that was not a Volkswagen. Most people thought I was mad giving up a "reliable" VW for a poor Fiat. My Fiat is a lot more reliable then any of the VWs I've had. The last few year Fiat really improved a lot. (stay well away from the Fiat Stilo though!)

Hey Fly, yeah I moved to Houston in 2010 and the Lincoln was not the best choice for a 35 mile commute in urban traffic.

Guys, I am signing papers right now on a 2014 Civic Si, 3,000 miles. Plenty quick enough for me, with legendary Honda reliability.

Thanks for all the great advice!

Its funny how a brand's reliability image is different all around the world. In the US VW's reliability is considered just as bad as Fiats (and, full disclosure, I drive a VW).

Hard to go wrong with a Honda reliability wise. Hope it treats you well. I used to own an RSX type-S (badged Honda integra here). Great engine, I miss it.
