Censored Websites And Applications In China?

Sun Jul 12, 2015 6:53 am

Hi,

I will be in China in August, and I would like to know the main websites/Apps which are censored.

I wonder how I will keep in touch with my family since Facebook and Skype are censored.
Is hotmail censored too??

Thanks!

Instagram is blocked.

I was able to access Outlook.com in January, so presumably Hotmail is fine too. This website is very handy for testing what sites can and can't be accessed:

Google products are more often than not blocked also. Get them to download wechat.

Skype works in China.
But I would suggest using a VPN. My Chinese friend does that and it seems to work. Around sensitive dates, such as the date of the Tiananmen square massacre less things tend to work.

But the main problem with internet in China is that it is always extremely slow to get data from outside China into China.

IF they work, they do try to block them as well. My VPN provider does not work in China.

In general commercial consumer VPNs of late have ceased working.

This website drags in china because of all the behind the scenes rubbish that loads before the content.

I'm in China right now, this is such a joke.

- Internet has been shitty in ALL the public places I have been to, especially at the airport (including the Air China lounge where I am now), but even in my hotel and in the office where I have worked today. No way to get a decent connection !

- Mobile connection is also pathetic. China is the only country in Asia, with Myanmar and Lao, where I can't get a proper 3G or H+ connection. It's always Edge at best ! And I'm in Beijing right now, not in the middle of nowhere.

- I can use Google maps, google search engine, Instagram and Facebook on my Singaporean phone, however I can't update the Le Monde app.

- The desktop versions of Google, Facebook or Le Monde are blocked.

I'm quite happy to get out of here.

Overseas use of foreign phones and accessing Google, etc varies by city too.

How about Remote Desktop connections to your own system back home? Any comment on that?

Company VPNs work but tend to fall over frequently.

Skype does work in China. I have used it many times when I travel out to Chengdu, China.

Skype does work - just download the Chinese mainland joint venture version which isn't secure - hence it being allowed.

RDP is not VPN; but it may not work well either. Have not tried it from China, as I've never been there! I have had success with RDP when a VPN had not a chance.

Remote Desktop connections can work in china - but are very very slow. Most of the Chinese international bandwidth is throttled. As I said earlier, this website here takes for ever to load as the background 'services' keep stalling.
