Coldest/Hottest Temperature You've Experienced

Tue Sep 01, 2015 5:01 am

What's the coldest/warmest temperature you've ever experienced outside? Saunas don't count!

For me, the coldest is around -23C/-9F (I know, not that impressive for being Canadian) in Toronto in the middle of January.
The hottest was only for a brief moment, when I was remote boarding an Etihad A330 at Abu Dhabi Airport and it was around 40C/104F.

I'm not 100% sure if these are the most extreme temperatures I've experienced, but I'm pretty sure they're the most extreme where I knew what the temperature was.

Both of these occurred where I lived at the time northwest of Chicago in Southwestern Wisconsin. The hottest was in the summer of 1995. We had one exceptionally hot week, and one day the temperature topped out at 108F/42C.

The coldest was actually about 6 months later, in February 1996. We had a very cold week, and one morning the temperature bottomed out at -50F/-46C. This was an unofficial temperature; it was from the thermometer at my house.

Both my hottest and coldest were both experienced in Eastern Washington... -10F/-23C to 101F/38C. I have no desire to reach the upper end ever again, but I would like to get much farther down on the cold end. -50F without wind chill would be awesome.

I had the (unfortunate??) experience of having both my coldest and hottest days ever on the same journey. I was living in Berlin and moving back to Melbourne, Australia. When I left Berlin on 06FEB09, it was -22C with about a -30C windchill factor. I arrived in MEL the following day to the hottest day ever experienced in MEL: +46C. Some will recall, a few days following that, there were disastrous bush fires that swept across the state of Victoria.

A difference of 68 degrees. It was a shock to the system!

Coldest: -29C in Helsinki
Hottest: +52C in Doha

Disliked Doha the most; at least Helsinki had unisex saunas both at the office and the hotel

The 'worst', however, was a summer evening in Dubai. Sure, the temperature had dropped from 48C to 40C, but at the same time the humidity had gone up to 90%+.

100 F with high humidity also in Minneapolis, which usually happens every summer.

During the "polar vortex" saga of 2014, STL had a harsh winter after it. I woke up one morning to subzero temperatures with windchill around the -10s F.

Highest temperature was maybe in Memphis, TN back in 2010. A heat wave settled in and temperatures rose to as high as the low to mid 100s F. And the South, being such a "pleasant" place weather-wise, heat indexes were as high as the low 110s F.

My lowest temperature of -40°F (-40°C) was in Amherst, Nova Scotia in 2009. Thankfully there was no wind.

My hottest temperature of 118°F (48°C) was just last week in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The humidity was very high too! I will never forget the feeling of breathing in very hot, very moist air. It was much more humid than a sauna...

The hottest temperature I ever experienced was 120 F in Palm Springs California Summer 1989. The coldest was this past Winter in New Jersey, at 6:00Am driving to work it was -5 F. That was the actual air temperature and not factoring in the wind chill. I never experienced anything that cold in my life, walking from my car into my office I got a severe wind burn on my legs as the cold air went right through the material.

Hottest for me would be every summer I was on the ramp at PHX. Officially the hottest day I worked was 118F/48C, though taking into account the vast expanses of 170F+ concrete and a gentle breeze from multiple Airbus pack vents I'm sure it was actually much hotter. A close runner-up was Dubai a few years ago, with an air temperature of 114F and a dew point of 85F...combining for a heat index of 152F/67C.

Coldest was in Sandpoint, ID, at -8F/-22C.

The hottest I've experienced must have been the heatwave I encounted in Seoul in the summer of 2000, during a stopover while enroute to SYD. Stepping off the KE 747 at GMP (yay for being bussed to the terminal) felt like stepping into an oven, but thankfully everywhere we went had working A/C. Don't know how hot it was though, but i's the only time I've ever been grateful for A/C.

I can't ever recall experiencing truly cold weather. We had a couple of days a few winters ago, where the windchill factor made it feel like -20 C, but thankfully I didn't have to go out for very long.

Coldest: -12F/-24C in DEN late 2013 and late 2014. Denver's saving grace is its relatively dry climate, but -12 is still damn cold no matter how dry the climate is.

Hottest: Summer 1994 heatwave in the San Fernando Valley. Temps ranged from 110F to 115F/43F to 46F. I've also spent some very hot days in Southern Greece that were certainly above 100F, though I've never gotten around to accessing the exact temperature while I'm there.

I grew up in Edmonton and also spent 9 years in two stretches in Calgary 1969-72 and again 1990-1996.

Canadian government weather data shows the coldest recorded temperature during any of my 19 years in Edmonton and 9 years in Calgary as -44.4C (-47.9F) one year in Edmonton when I was 3 years old.

There weren't any years when I lived in either city when there weren't at least a few days below -30C (-22F).

During my first period in Calgary, there was an unusually long cold spell one winter. I think it was 1969/70. Canada was still using Fahrenheit then. I remember there was a period of 40 consecutive days when YYC's temperature never exceeded 0F (-17.8C) day or night, and quite a few days when it dropped well into the -30s C. The weather data shows YYC's lowest temperature in both 1969 and 1970 as -38.9C (-38.0F).

In that part of Canada, at least in Celsius, the highest and lowest temperatures every year are usually about the same, except for the minus sign in the winter.

My highest temperature is probably not much over 40C (104F). It made it 39.7C one day in early July this year in GVA, an all-time record for GVA.

-21C / -7F in Pittsburgh, PA. Wind chill was -19F. Before I lived in Pittsburgh, I'd never felt a temperature below 20F.

I saw a "feels like" temp of -36F on my phone in Boston this winter. But I didn't go outside. Air temp was 0F.

Hottest:

39C / 103F in Seattle, WA. Yes I know - not where you'd expect. This was the hottest day ever in Seattle. I try to avoid really hot places.

Coldest = -43C, close to the Sweden/Norway border towards the North, a couple kilometers on the Sweden side. This temperature is extreme even for this region (although down at -30C is relatively common)

hottest = 47C, Paynes Find, WA, Australia, driving up towards Broome.

Both times have been during a drive between two towns in remote areas. A little nerveracking, hoping the fuel wouldn't freeze up on us on the one occasion, and having trouble fuelling up at Paynes Find. Temperature a little too hot for the pump (although, it did start up after about 10 minutes of trying).

Since then, I've lived in North-Eastern WA, and in the wet season, even if the temperatures are between 34 and 38, it feel much much hotter due to the humidity. Weather service here often say temperature 34, feels like 45, hottest I've had it "feel like" is 49C.

The warmest/coldest that I know of is just above +40C which was experienced 20 years ago during
a vacation in Alcuidia, Mallorca. The coldest that I have experienced was during the night between December
23rd and 24th some 3-4 years ago. The temperature was -27C which is unusual cold for where I live.
It rarely gets below -20C and when it does, it's only 1 or 2 degrees below.

The hottest temperature I experienced would probably be 43-44C in Las Vegas while the coldest is probably about -22C or so on the ramp at YYZ. Of course, with few buildings around to stop the wind it is absolutely bone chilling as it feels like -30C or lower.

Hottest must have been at some point during a Mississippi summer, but I don't recall the precise temperature. Something around 40°C.

Coldest: A thermometer in the airport in Tambov, Russia I saw said -36 C at about 2 PM, bright sunny January afternoon when we landed. We flew out the next day at around 7 AM, and I don't know how cold it was apart from being f...ing cold.

Hottest: Not sure but it was probably around 48 C in New Delhi in May 2004, which as I recall was a record-breaker. I once visited the eastern shore of the Dead Sea in Jordan which felt even hotter, but maybe it was the humidity and the fact there was no wind in that depression.

Hottest is 106F in Waterbury, CT.

RE: Coldest/Hottest Temperature You've Experienced

The coldest was probably -8F on my high school senior ski trip, while the hottest was at least 104F here in Philadelphia.

I've experienced a heat index of over 130 (we were under black flag conditions, and the PA Army National Guard took over supervising our safety protocols those couple days - it was at a CAP encampment), and a wind chill of -25.

I much prefer the cold.

Hottest: 2004 - Kuwait, 54C but it was a dry heat...
