F1 2015: Singaporean Grand Prix

People,

if the huge fires in the area will allow us......we will be enjoying the Singaporean GP this coming weekend!

I can´t start this type of thread as well as GrahamHill can, but I thought it was only fair for somebody else to give it a go.
We can´t fatigue our own Mister Hill.
Perhaps he can chime in later with more info.

So here goes:

Singapore F1

Rosberg does have his new spec engine back for this race however, which means he has slightly more power available to him as it has lower mileage than Hamiltons.

However, that might not be something Rosberg can capitalise on at Singapore due to the track layout...

Interesting times ahead. Rosberg needs a few Hamilton DNFs to face any realistic chance of a championship win this season imho.

Talking about engines, the FIA are thinking about enacting cost caps on engine supply's to customer teams, both both "current" and "current - 1" specs - which begs the question, what happens when the engines cost more to supply than the supplier can charge...?

All these cost caps and still we're losing teams & manufacturers. Pretty soon it'll be the Mercedes-Benz World Championship!

As for the race, the haze will definitely have a big effect on proceedings. Here in KUL the visibility level is very low & the air quality is definitely not good. I believe it is much worse down south in SIN!

In his current form, barring any mechanical gremlins, Hamilton should be very hard to beat. He will also have the incentive (if he needs it) of a win equaling Senna's record of 41 wins in 161 starts.

Which teams have we lost which were competitive anyway? The only real mid-tier team struggling financially at the moment is Lotus, for reasons of its own making. Honda went from a mid-to-lower field team to winning the championship and becoming a front runner in a few years, all because of the proper amount of investment.

Putting cost caps on engine supply's is what will drive engine suppliers out of the sport, or at least out of being suppliers to third party teams - who in their right mind would be willing to develop an engine where the only team that could bear the full cost of developing that engine is the manufacturers team.

If an engine costs $XMillion to develop, and the manufacturer supplies 3 teams, then the cost of each engine should be X/24 - if the FIA are going to cap the cost the manufacturer can sell engines at an arbitrary level, say $YMillion each, and Y is less than X/24, then the manufacturer is going to be operating at a loss.

Engine manufacturers selling to third party teams are doing so as a business, nothing more - if the cost is too much for a third party team to bear then they should either switch to another supplier or get out of F1 and into a formula they can afford to be in.

A bit problematic for the race. Organizers said there was no plans to change the GP schedule, because the sitatuation is too unpredictable at the moment. Let's hope the fires calm down a bit.

Rosberg has already have some luck - if the cock up at Monaco hadnt happened, Rosberg would be a further 17 points adrift of Hamilton at this point, coming in at a total of 70 points behind rather than 53.

At this point I think the next 7 races are a formality.

There are murmurings that if Red Bull cannot secure a competitive engine (eg not a current -1 spec engine) for 2017, the FIA will require one of the engine manufacturers to sell engines and support to them at an FIA mandated price.

Rosberg will take his fourth engine this weekend, as the failed unit from Monza has yet to pass inspection so Mercedes have decided to bring Rosbergs next engine forward.

If the failed unit isnt recoverable then Rosberg faces grid penalties, which basically means the end of his championship hopes.

Its been confirmed this morning that Rosbergs planned test run of his dodgy Monza power unit will not go ahead today, and Rosberg will run his fourth brand new engine for the entire weekend. Its not looking good for that third power unit, which puts Rosberg at a huge disadvantage now.

I think it seems logical.

VAG entered Porsche in the WEC so take over as the VAG-group brand in WEC. Audi will be moved
to Formula 1 while VW stays with the WRC.

Mercedes just had their arses handed to them by....Renault. Fantastic Quali session, great to have the first two rows on the grid being Mercedes free zones for once. Vettel's lap was perfection.

I still wonder about the Merc perf. could it be that they have been forced to Change something on tyre pressures , knowing how strictly it will be checked this Weekend & after the Monza fiasco?
Could this be hurting their Performance? I wonder what happened all of a sudden, I mean we are talking of 1.5 secs to the Ferrari, that is a world in F1 Terms......

Fantastic race! Best one for ages; it's very nice to have a podium without any Mercedes drivers for once. Great for Ferrari to have a double podium. Also good that the title contest between Hamilton and Rosberg has gotten a little closer.

The stewards decisions regarding the Massa/Hulkenberg and the Button/Maldonado incidents seemed very inconsistent.

Anyone else of the opinion that Button will be quitting F1 at the end of the season? I thought that his demeanour this weekend seems to be consistent with that. McLaren has had 12 retirements this season.

Interesting that Verstappen didn't let Sainz through when he was told to. Seems that dad was pleased that he didn't:

Why is he a cry baby? He doesn't want to have a team that can't compete with the front runners, why is voicing that so dreadful? He would rather spend his money elsewhere rather than remain in F1 as a mid-field team, thats entirely his prerogative.

The team can work wonders on aero and it can mean nothing at all without a decent spec engine.

Well, I guess the obvious answer to that would be that the supplier would stop supplying engines at a loss, leaving the team relying on the supply without engines. Cost caps on engine supplies make no sense, that'll have the opposite of the intended effect - manufacturers have less incentive to supply teams.

I wouldn't get too excited. Singapore is an unusual track with unusual characteristics. Power is almost irrelevant here, what is important is aerodynamic and mechanical grip. Apparently, Red Bull has a lot of the former, and Ferrari the latter. I would expect Mercedes to be back in front at Suzuka.

I've always said I was against team orders if there was no championship at stake. So to me, he was right. And his boss said the same.

What has he done to you that you want him out of F1? This is no one's business that they keep him other than the team's director. Of course he brings a lot of money to the team. It means that his sponsors believe in him or it would have gone to somebody else - He is not only retained by his team for the money. He had a multi years deal with Lotus if they were not happy with his driving he would have been sent out as there's a big waiting line. If not Lotus another team would take him.

Take yesterday's race. It was Button who drove into the back of Pastor and blew one of his diffusers.
Button's race ended at lap 52 with a gearbox issue. Karma never fails.
Pastor pitted at lap 55 and I thought he was going to be retired by the team but no he took on some fresh tyres, he headed back out and finished the race.

Button, Alonso, Hamilton, Massa and Hulkenberg were all go bye bye.
Hard to tell what happened to Mehri.

I read the interview. Most chances are that Button will sign out after the Japan race.
He will have no trouble finding work after he ends his F1 career. The media will love him.

I know nobody likes Pastor. There's no need to insist.
His detractors will have to keep bickering for another season.

As for the new Renault team they can hire Vladimir Putin. I think he would make a decent pay driver. Probably beat Pastor on the cash and then he's already had some training.

A British have been charged for the track walk.

Likely someone (parents?) paid for him or he has "access" to money even if he isn't working.

Yeah, unfortunately, when talented young drivers are waiting in the wings for a seat. Jolyon Palmer would've been a better bet, in my opinion. If Maldonado didn't come with PDVSA backing, he wouldn't be in F1.

Red Bull are playing to compete, not settle for second or third place.

Williams last won the WCC in 1997, and they had a works spec engine that year as Renault only had customer teams, they didn't have a works team.

More recently, Williams have settled into competing for second or lower in the title race, they haven't ever seemed to want to compete for the title.

Why shouldn't he threaten to quit if he can't compete at the level he wants to?

If it's true, I'll be sad to see Jenson go. He's been my favourite F1 driver since the BAR days. Though at the same time I'm sort of glad to see him calling it quits and going to find something else. I'd rather have him in world rallycross, WEC, or anything really, provided he's in competitive equipment. He's already won a WDC, he has nothing left to prove in F1 IMHO. As excited as I was last year for him to be back, in hindsight I wish he'd have called it quits then. Honda gave them a dog of a motor this year, and seeing him lapping around fighting with Manor is really quite sad. I'm sure Fernando is really beginning to regret his move from the Scuderia as well.
