Buy GM Car Parts During Two Day Stay In Chicago?

Mon Oct 05, 2015 11:42 pm

Hello a.net!

I own a lovely 1996 GMC 1500 Savana conversion van together with my friends. We use it as a road trip vehicle and party car. Beer fridge and Nintendo games are installed...
The thing is that it has about almost 500 000 miles (800 000 km) on the meter so it needs some care sometimes.

The transmission electronics shorted out when driving in the Czech mountains this summer (we had to shift manually for the rest of the trip and had no first gear, but no big problem). We have isolated the problem to a shifting solenoid.

Getting the parts to Sweden is a pretty expensive and time consuming process. Bought some brake rotors for example:
Price for the rotors: 95 $
Shipping and tax: 90 $
and it took three weeks to get them (and one bearing race was not mounted and missing but that is another story)

I am going on a business trip to Chicago tomorrow and would like to buy the solenoid i need somewhere. Is there a place where I can buy it? Or should i try to buy it over ebay and deliver it to the hotel (possible?). I only stay for two nights and are expected to be in meetings daytime.

Any tips appreciated.

P.S.
"Dropping the pan" will be an interesting experience!

Look for a Napa, Autozone, O'Reilly Auto, Advance Auto, or similar. They all have websites where you can find the parts and possibly the store availability.

That's the route I'd go.

Failing that, you can probably find a parts donor at any American trailer park. Or Walmart parking lot.

Don't waste your time at those places. The counter jockey probably doesn't know what a shift solenoid is. Go to a real auto parts store, that is aimed at professional technicians.; like NAPA, Carquest, Auto Value, etc. Those places may not even stock it. A transmission specific parts house would be your best bet. If you were in coming to Detroit I could help you out.

In Illinois they would be all rusted away...

Download the Autozone app, put in the zip of the place you are staying, check to see they have it in stock, or if worse comes to worse, post the zip of where you are staying and the transmission model number here. It's a GM part, used on a few million vehicles, autozone etc will stock it.

BTW, in the future, check Amazon, I have been amazed at the parts I have been able to find from them or their partners.

You could get lucky at one of those places and find a parts jockey that knows to do more than look up year, make, model in the computer -- but yeah not so likely. If you have a specific GM part # that would make it much easier. I would also think finding a Chevy dealer that does a big parts business would be worth a call as well. Odds are you'd talked to somebody who is knowledgeable and they would have the part in stock.

Thanks for the help! Found the shifting solenoid at Napa.
Chicago was a really nice city, hope I can go there for a longer time than 2 nights next time.

In Sweden it is actually a rare and pretty cool vehicle. Rare because the extreme fuel consumption combined with our gas prices makes it very uneconomical. People love the V8 sound, V8s are very rare in Sweden...

Oh I get it completely. I'll send you all the junk van parts you want if you can send a Lancia Delta HF Integrale or Escort Cosworth.

My outside but not unreasonable contender for my next car would be a Skyline GT-R. (Although the JDM devotees are weird)

In the SW suburbs of Chicago there is a huge GM parts distribution center. If you have difficulty finding the part at a retailer, I would go the dealer (Chevy or GMC) route and see if they can get the part. If the parts distribution center has it, they should be able to get it to you in a day or so. I don't believe the public has access to the distribution center itself.
