The Best And Worst Votes You've Made.

Wed Nov 18, 2015 2:12 am

Generally, I'm thinking political voting however anything is fair open game. Can be a vote you made at your employment, school, for a TV reality show, and even here on the poll forum of A-Net!

Vote I regret: Voting For Martin O'Malley for Governor of Maryland.

Best Vote: So far knock on wood for Governor Larry Hogan (State of Maryland).

And, believe it or not I'm a registered Democrat.
Currently not wild about President Obama's choices but, I could not stomach voting for Mc Cain in '08 nor Mitt in '12.

Worst Vote:
Perot in '92...I was an political idealist.

Best Vote:
Oh, I don't know...quite possibly my last vote, we'll have to wait and see how he handles a split legislature with an entrenched and hostile opposition party: Matt Bevin

Best Vote, legalization of medical marijuana in California. Paved the way for recreational legalization. And it was a tough decision for me to make.

I can't think of a vote that I regret, though.

My worst was Ronald Reagan. An actor who charmed the people into being elected twice. (Cold War Hysteria) My fault, never to be repeated, wait, I voted for Bush 43. Twice stupid, still trying to recover my wealth along with everyone I know.

My best, Bill Clinton, twice. Jobs and money was flowing in both directions, not so much these days. One direction, up.

As a Republican, this may amaze some

Best : Harry Ried, the choice was him or Sharron Angle, it was a no brainer.
Worst: I can't think of one.

Worst vote: John Anderson in 1980. Carter lost in a landslide and Anderson failed to garner many votes, so it's not as if I tipped things in Reagan's direction. But looking back I regret I didn't support Carter fully. His vision of where our world was heading was prescient. And the Reagan era issued in a series of "reforms" that stripped my country of some of the best social programs we had.

Worst vote...there are two that rank up there.
1. Then Resident Commissioner Luis Fortuño, at his party primary (New Progressive Party, the pro-statehood party) in 2008. It was so he could be the nominee instead of the favorite at the time, former governor Pedro Rossello (who no one except his supporters wanted). Fortuño, however, is a Republican; Rossello is a Democrat. Should have seen that coming. Even though I didn't vote for him in the general election, his 4 year term was among the worst.
2. Current governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla (pro-status quo party, the Popular Democratic Party with which I formerly identified with, and a Democrat). I should have gone with one of the 3rd party candidates who had better appeal to me. But the election was neck and neck so I gave him my support so that Fortuño didn't win another term. I no longer live on the island but I still think I should have voted 3rd party.

Best vote:
Hillary Clinton during the 2008 Democrat primaries.

Wow...this is a tough one as I have to recall all my votes. My best vote was probably Scott Walker the first time, as he brought much needed reforms to WI, but unfortunately has gone off the deep end in his second term. Worst vote is really tough but it was probably the primary vote I cast in the 2008 presidential election. McCain had the republican nomination wrapped up by that point and I was so against Hillary that I voted for Obama in the democratic primary. Hindsight 20/20 I would have rather had Hillary than Obama, now this country is screwed up that Hillary is really looking bad and I don't know who can fix this mess. Nor am I convinced the solutions are political.

If your vote didn't matter then it can't really be good or bad in my opinion.

I voted for revolutionary communist Arlette Laguiller in 2002 (aged 18) and cost my ultimate candidate Lionel Jospin 1 vote, he ended up out of the race and president Chirac got another term, 5 shitty years, paving the way for Sarkozy after him for another 5 shitty years.

Au contraire, mon ami.

All votes matter. It means you spoke your mind at the booth. If enough people had the courage to think their votes mattered, the landscape could be significantly different. Whether you content with the choice you made or not is another matter entirely, regardless of whether it made a difference or not. Were you content with voting for Languiller? if so, that was a good vote (even if the outcome was not the one you wanted). If you regret it because of the outcome, then that was a bad vote.

It's when you don't vote that you don't have an option to declare a good/bad vote. Even a blank/spoiled vote is still a valid vote.

Best: Justin Trudeau though it's too early to declare him a successful PM.

Worst: Stephen Harper - for obvious reasons.

Best votes was for Clinton (my first ever as a Republican voting for a Democrat) and Obama against the total failure of the GOP in national Government.

Worst votes: Bush I and II. I only voted for both for their first term. I guess you could add my vote for Nixon, but except for that small Watergate issue I was continually impressed with his performance on the international issues. Pity he let those round him crew up his Presidency - but that seems to always be the case.

As a dual AUS / US citizen these are my best votes:

George W Bush in the USA

John Howard in Australia.

Both legends.

I don't have any 'worst' votes because I would never vote for any weak head case on the left side of politics.

Have a great day!

Worst: Bill Clinton in 1996. I voted for him eagerly in 1992, then with much more resignation in 1996, and when I see how he handled (i.e. ignored) major national security threats being thrown at us in the late 1990's, well what the hell were we paying him for.

Best: Taylor Hicks.

I voted for GWBush in 2000 and lord knows that was a disaster. I fell for the compassionate conservatism and the relatively good record for Texas. Al Gore strangely did not have a personality until the global warming issue became his mantra.

Best: Narendra Modi in the 2014 Indian General Elections. It was the biggest election in recorded human history, with an official electorate of 835 million, of whom 555 million voted, for a 66.5% turnout. The entire election was conducted flawlessly using electronic voting machines and the results tabulated and announced within a span of hours on May 16 2014.

Modi's BJP swept the polls achieving a simple majority of the 543 seat parliament, the first time a single party did so since 1984, in a change from India's coalition politics. His party coalition has just short of 2/3rds of the seats, while the previously ruling Congress were reduced from 210 to 44 seats.

I think he was seeking just to start breaking some barriers.

I don't regret any of my votes. Many of them lost (but maybe that made them good votes?). In the cases where the candidate won and wasn't amazing, I still think the other option(s) would have been worse by far.

Now many of you know me as an outspoken liberal, so this may surprise you, but I count this as my best vote.

I was 19, and it was the first election that I had an opportunity to vote in: In the 2003 Governor's Recall election of Gray Davis.

I voted No on the recall - his recall was mostly driven by anger due to the electrical power issues California faced, and the rolling blackouts that had to occur statewide, forcing the CA government to enter into high cost contracts for new electrical supplies. As it turns out, this had been caused by market manipulation by Enron and its affiliates taking power generation capacity offline, but nevertheless it was seized upon and used as one of the main issues to drive the election. It tapped into the anger.

I voted Yes on the recall, and voted to elect Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican who ended up running an administration that, while on the face of it looked 'Republican', took lessons from the Barry Goldwater school of conservative theory. And that, my friends, is a good way to run government in my opinion.

I voted to re-elect him, despite all my other votes going to the Democratic party in subsequent elections. And now that the GOP doesn't have any Goldwater-esque types and has run out all of its moderates leaving only a shell of hysteria, religion, and fear, I can't stomach voting for them when the Democratic president (Obama), and the incoming heir apparent (Clinton) has run an administration that has largely been to the right side of H.W. Bush and Nixon.

The vote that haunts me the most was the vote to implement neighborhood parking permits. The idea was to get relief from overflow parking from the nearby university. Now it costs $35 per car, per year, for the ability to park a car in front of my house. Every year I have to provide proof of residency, vehicle ownership and my contrite left nut to secure parking permits down at the the new Parking Permit Department at city hall. Every day, Parking Enforcement now patrols my residential neighborhood on the eagle eye for anybody without a permit. Or people with a permit that may not be hanging just right, in their opinion. God help you if your quick visitor parks on the street for a quick in-and-out as the ever-vigilant Parking Enforcers swoop in every 30-60 minutes with their $65 tickets. Now that university parking has been helped with a new garage and the rest have been scared off by Parking Enforcement, the only people they are harassing are the residents themselves.

My worst presidential vote may be Obama in 2012. Time will tell if the energy policy gambit I made pays off long term over some of the other, horrendous policies.

If I remember right, I never voted for any politician because I thought he/she would be doing right. That is because there has never been one I fully trusted beside Mr. Schmidt who was buried today. Therefore all my votes were very unenthusiastic and tactical, more like trying to prevent the bad rather than defining the best. I am a man who generally would be regarded as belonging to the middle of the spectrum, I hate extremists of all sorts, but in a few points I am a moderate socialist (1st tax laws - Germany has the most unjust rich-poor ratio in central Europe, we are a rich country with many poor, and many filthy rich, and a shrinking middle, 2nd better encouragements for lowly educated people into qualified work, 3rd government building program) and in some others a moderate right (immigration laws, christian-based culture, border security).
