A.net Dating...

Sun Nov 22, 2015 12:25 pm

Has there ever been any attempts at an a.net dating service?
There seems to be a million niche dating services, so why not one for a.netters?

Cheers,
Bunumuring.

Quoting bunumuring (Thread starter):

I'm not sure it's really got enough users to make a functional dating service.

I can see how things will go down though:

*Romantic candlelight illuminates the scene*

A: You're really sexy, and I love your personality... Boeing or Airbus?

B: Boeing

A: What?! How can you say that, even you'd have trouble fitting into those 17' seats! More like NightmareLiner!

B: They're better looking, and not copy and paste jobs like Airbus' planes are!

A: Airbus pioneered FBW in airliners, how can you say they copy?

B: FBW with envelope protection is an awful idea, look at AF447!

A: At least Airbus airliners don't go missing like MH370...

And so on until food and drink is thrown and we need to go back to A.net to rant.

Are the demographics of A.net diverse enough to not end up with 99% seeking the 1%?

Mr HMSH, you have so read my mind! If only I could find a partner who could hold a debate with me on the merits of A v B, whether Qantas should have bought the 777 and whether any colourscheme has ever existed that rivals Wunula Dreaming as the greatest of all time!

moo, I agree with you too. The question is, am I in the 99% or the 1%, lol!

Serious lack of WOMEN on this website so dating would be virtually impossible.

Unless you are talking about non-romantic relationships, the ratio would still be massively skewed whether you talk about hetrosexual, homosexual, bisexual or asexual relationships.

I've lurked on this site a long time before joining, and from what I recall: not only have there been quite a few A.net-inspired relationships, but even at least one A.net wedding. A heterosexual one too.

But yeah, dating from this site wouldn't work.

It's almost entirely male; and while the homosexual demographic seems to have a far larger representation here than in everyday life for most places, it's probably still not sufficient to maintain a dating service aimed at longterm relationships.

Less than 10 regular female posters, hundreds of regular male users...those are some pretty depressing odds for the heterosexual guys on a.net. On the other hand, if you are a woman or gay, and interested in aviation and finding a partner, a.net might be a really good place to find one!

How is the ratio for homosexual relationships massively skewed? For every 100 males looking, there are 99 other potential partners. It's only the hetrosexual relationships that would be skewed, with something like 100 males for every 1 female, or whatever the ratio happens to be.

It's between 14 and 18 in Europe. Germany, Austria, Italy and much of the Balkans have 14, Switzerland has 16. But there can be stipulations, like "under 18, there shall be less than x years of age difference".

Interestingly, some more societally conservative countries have lower ages of consents, and age of consent has been low since a very long time so that e.g. farmers could marry off their girls early. Heck, you can't use them for field work, but they can manage a household... 14, 15 or 16 as the age of consent has been there since more than 140 years, it's certainly no invention of our time.

So, age of consent isn't that low because we're a liberal and free society.

As a tutoring teacher and a volleyball semi-official I have quite a lot of contact with people in that age range. Two observations: Girls can behave more mature than they really are, as maturity is not really demanded from boys. "They're boys, they should enjoy some fun...". And people of both sexes at the age of 18 or 19 can still look like children, and others at 15 can look like adults.

We are what we do. It's no sin to enjoy the looks of anybody, whatever her or his age. But it's another thing to behave in a way so that she or he thinks "WTF...????"

There's definitely a demographic issue. Although I'm probably the beneficiary of that lopsided demographic (predominantly male, heterosexual, and so on), I can't see a relationship actually working, although I will say there's one guy I met on here that I actually entertained the possibility of a relationship with, and then he went and got married on me. Grrargh! Oh well. Could've worked... aside from the long distance issue. Which, make no mistake, is a huge issue. Even though I love aviation, and flying, I hate the airport and the ritual of flying.

Nothing turns me off like having to deal with the TSA. But nothing turns me on like a guy who can calculate EPR ratios for an early JT9D and a wet thrust takeoff...

Anyone here have any luck with Match.com or OKCupid? I actually picked up a stalker through OKCupid once - fairly recently actually, and I've only just gotten that situation sorted out. I haven't actually tried to pony up any cash for any of the pay sites but I imagine the returns are better - people are more motivated when they're paying for it.

Apologies for taking this off topic: but does anyone remember what thread the '757 FIsh' thread is? That must be another A.Net legend. I enjoyed reading the adventures of FLAirport!

Back on topic:

I agree with the above posters above, the demographics don't favour a functional dating service. In my extensive use of online dating websites (using Tinder while I'm on the bog), there aren't that many women that hook up with you, and OK, that's slightly different to a potential A.net online love palace, but it shows the kind of numbers you may need.

Well, it's a good thing that it isn't my little sister you are dating because I would want to meet you and find out exactly what your Internations were and why a 24 year old grown man would want to date a 16 year old girl. I have three sisters, two older, one younger and I always have to vet their dates :-P

You might want to keep your age preferences quiet from the 36 year old. I am varied in my dating ages too but more in line with my own age group.

Good luck in your dating!

You obviously don't have sisters if you are asking. And I am protective of all my three sisters: the oldest is married to a good Aussie chap, the next needs to stop dating idiots and the youngest, well, I won't be allowing her to go to Denmark anytime soon (for obvious reasons; like you)!

However, I am not here to be your judge so carry on and you are not doing anything illegal as you say but watch out for big brothers like me :-P

And I am sure your dating scene is varied in Denmark too?

We met in the A.net chat room and took it off the internet and got to know each other. We got engaged over 2 years later and married in 2011. We now have a little boy who is almost two and have been married almost 5 years now. She hasn't been active on A.net in a long time but I owe our marriage and the existance of my child to this site.

why a 24 year old grown man would want to date a 16 year old girl.

Because 16 year olds are easily impressed and don't notice how shallow the older man is. It's that teenage girl crush thing that suspends critical thinking and an honest appraisal of the 24 year old guy. An older woman would take one quick look and walk away seeing the obvious moral flaws.
