Can Leicester Win The Premiership?

Sat Feb 06, 2016 8:00 pm

After todays 1-3 defeat of City away, thoughts of they are doing really well are beginning to turn to maybe than can do it!

If they can beat Arsenal next time out which seems entirely plausible, they might build up a lead not to be overtaken.

Whatever happens, its an amazing story and there is no question who manager of the season will be. Bet Abramovich is scratching his head...

Vardy & Mahrez have to be strong contenders for player of the season too.

They could.

I just love Man City, formerly the crap team in Manchester, down in the Championship getting mowed down by them.

After just complaining about lesser known teams winning because it isnt good for the league.

As a supporter of a small team that once came within one point of winning the old 1st Division, I really hope they do it.

With only four teams having won 22/23 EPL titles (Blackburn Rovers being the 'odd' winners in 1994/5), it's about time another team won it. That they have a serious chance with a team that's been put together on a shoestring budget compared with the other top EPL teams is astonishing.

After today's win at Man City, surely (despite Ranieri's denials) even they must believe they can win it now. I just hope they continue to play with the freedom they are as they look as though they're really enjoying themselves.

Being a Tottenham fan, naturally I would love Spurs to win it. But if we don't, I'd love to see Leicester do it. To think this time last year they were at the bottom of the league staring down the barrel of the relegation gun!

What an awesome game it was to watch this morning! Leicester now have a close to 60% chance of winning the Prem, and with 13 games left, it looks less and less likely (to the point I don't think it will happen) that they will have the collapse that everybody said was bound to occur. The team, and particularly Vardy and Mahrez have played at a high level for long enough now that we have to really start believing that this is really the level they are capable of playing at, not some aberration. After they play the Gunners next week, the rest of the schedule until the last three weeks when they play United, Everton, and Chelsea is quite manageable. If Leicester can beat Arsenal next week, there is a good chance they will be in a position going into the last three weeks where they only need three or four to wrap up the title.

I think they can. They can focus 100% on the league, and with their style of play they can beat anyone. I watched them last year in a 2-2 draw at St. Mary's and after a poor start they were over Southampton like a rash, their energy and pace was ridiculous. I think they can beat Arsenal next week, and if they're favourites now, they'd really be in the driving seat. They've improved their defence considerably, they score all kinds of goals, screamers, set-pieces, counterattacks and one-touch passes. The main reason I think they can do it is that with all those tools and improved defence, they'll beat most of the sh*te teams easily.

Mahrez is my player of the season, and I think he'll win it, Vardy a close second. Those 2 and N'Golo Kante would also be in my team of the year.

The only problem I had with Leicester in the earlier part of the season was the amount of conceded goals. They had conceded 20+ goals, while other top teams were in the low, low teens. In fact, their defensive record was closer to 12-14 spot. So, as soon as Vardy and Mahrez stopped scoring, they'd be in trouble.

However, their defence has really improved. Now, their conceded goals is closer to top table. Still on high end, but comparing their last 2 months with the rest of the top teams, and they have been really good. Now, even after that poor defensive start, they have only conceded 1 more goal than City.

And on top of that, Mahrez and Vardy still keep scoring. Not quite at the pace as early season, but still going strong!

For me, this is the key:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35514306

Once the players look at the table and the realisation that they are in a position to win it sinks in, can they stop the pressure of expectation getting to them?

We've seen it plenty of times in sport where the plucky underdog plays with a freedom that comes from the mentality of "I've got nothing to lose" until they get to the point where they realise "Shit, I can win this thing." Then they start thinking about their game and it all goes to pot.

The England vs Australia Test at Edgbaston in 2005, is a classic example. As the no-hope last pair got closer and closer to a very improbable win, they stopped batting with the freedom they had previously displayed and tried to bat sensibly. Eventually losing the game just two agonising runs short of their target.

I really hope Leicester do it!

That being said, Leicester have been wonderful this year. A joy to watch. Yesterday they didn't simply beat City, but embarrassed them with their effort and team work. To think they were the butt of many jokes when they appointed the Tinker Man.

One advantage they have is no other distractions outside of the league. No midweek cup games or replays to plan for. They have 13 games to play in about 3 months. Thats huge at the business end of a season. Man City, Spurs, Arsenal and Man U are still in three competitions each, with City in the League Cup final. Yet another fixture for them to re-arrange.

Next weekend: City v Spurs and Arsenal v Leicester. This seasons been bloody great!!

Come on Leicester! If they get a result next week, I certainly can see it happen yes. After Arsenal away they appear to have doable fixtures right up to the 2nd to last matchday:

Sun 14/02/16 PRL Arsenal 13 : 00 Leicester City
Sat 27/02/16 PRL Leicester City 16 : 00 Norwich City
Tue 01/03/16 PRL Leicester City 20 : 45 West Bromwich …
Sat 05/03/16 PRL Watford 18 : 30 Leicester City
Mon 14/03/16 PRL Leicester City 21 : 00 Newcastle United
Sat 19/03/16 PRL Crystal Palace 16 : 00 Leicester City
Sat 02/04/16 PRL Leicester City 16 : 00 Southampton
Sat 09/04/16 PRL Sunderland 16 : 00 Leicester City
Sat 16/04/16 PRL Leicester City 16 : 00 West Ham United
Sat 23/04/16 PRL Leicester City 16 : 00 Swansea City
Sat 30/04/16 PRL Manchester United 16 : 00 Leicester City
Sat 07/05/16 PRL Leicester City 16 : 00 Everton
Sun 15/05/16 PRL Chelsea 16 : 00 Leicester City

They had a few games without a win, and I kinda expected them to drop like a rock due to the pressure of being top, but somehow they're back on track! The team has been an absolute joy to watch this season and I really hope they win it. I know Leicester is a bit like a puzzle that just perfectly fell into place, with Ranieri being the spooky Twilight Zone piece that mysteriously popped up. But still it pleases me that they're proving the football world (and specially the British one) that you don't need to spend 300 million quid to achieve succes.

It is. But look at the fixtures. If - if - they continue the way they are going and keep healthy they should be able to comfortably win 9 of those, and probably at least get points 2-3 more. The only real tough one is Arsenal away - and we would have said the same about City.

Im West Ham, so I dont expect to win anything ever lol and Im happy with a respectable top half finish, but Im definitely pulling for Leicester too. So happy for Ranieri too after being kicked to the curb at the Bridge.

I heard that at the beginning oft he season, odds on Leicester winning the title were 4000/1 and a bunch of die hard fans took a punt - I bet they are having coronaries!!

At this point in time, as much as I would love Leicester to win it (seeing as United aren't very likely to do so), the next game is crucial.

If Leicester win, they maintain a minimum of a 6 point gap on City, and would have a an 8-point gap on Arsenal, and at least 5 points on Tottenham. And at that point, I would put them down as strong favourites.

If Leicester lose, it is a completely different story. 2 point gap on Arsenal, and possibly only a 3 point and 2 point gap on City and Spurs. Then it is suddenly only a 1 game difference in points and anyone's title to win.

A draw would also be a good result. Keeps a good gap on Arsenal, but City and Spurs might be quite close. But a draw away at Arsenal would always be a good result. But, still, the gap would be too small and with too many games to go. Leicester do have what seems like an easier run of games to the end of the season, with no other competitions distracting them.

Forgot City play Spurs this weekend as well. The gist of my post above still stands, just the potential point differences may differ a bit.

Although, this is good for Leicester, as either Tottenham or City will be dropping some points (or both of them).

I posted the Leicester fixtures without checking what the others have to deal with. I didn't realise the others had way tougher games to play and also still find themselves in other competitions.

The Spurs are in the Europa League and FA Cup. In the PL they have to play Arsenal and Man Utd at home, and West Ham, Liverpool, Stoke and Chelsea away.

Tottenham Hotspur:
Sun 14/02/16 PRL Manchester City 17 : 15 Tottenham Hotspur
Thu 18/02/16 UEL Fiorentina 19 : 00 Tottenham Hotspur
Sun 21/02/16 FAC Tottenham Hotspur 16 : 00 Crystal Palace
Thu 25/02/16 UEL Tottenham Hotspur 21 : 05 Fiorentina
Sun 28/02/16 PRL Tottenham Hotspur 15 : 05 Swansea City
Wed 02/03/16 PRL West Ham United 20 : 45 Tottenham Hotspur
Sat 05/03/16 PRL Tottenham Hotspur 13 : 45 Arsenal
Sat 12/03/16 PRL Aston Villa 16 : 00 Tottenham Hotspur
Sat 19/03/16 PRL Tottenham Hotspur 16 : 00 AFC Bournemouth
Sat 02/04/16 PRL Liverpool 16 : 00 Tottenham Hotspur
Sat 09/04/16 PRL Tottenham Hotspur 16 : 00 Manchester United
Sat 16/04/16 PRL Stoke City 16 : 00 Tottenham Hotspur
Sat 23/04/16 PRL Tottenham Hotspur 16 : 00 West Bromwich …
Sat 30/04/16 PRL Chelsea 16 : 00 Tottenham Hotspur
Sat 07/05/16 PRL Tottenham Hotspur 16 : 00 Southampton
Sun 15/05/16 PRL Newcastle United 16 : 00 Tottenham Hotspur

Arsenal still are in the Champions League and FA Cup. Their home games seem doable, but away they still have to travel to Man Utd, Spurs, Everton, West Ham AND Man City.

Arsenal:
Sun 14/02/16 PRL Arsenal 13 : 00 Leicester City
Sat 20/02/16 FAC Arsenal 13 : 45 Hull City
Tue 23/02/16 UCL Arsenal 20 : 45 Barcelona
Sun 28/02/16 PRL Manchester United 15 : 05 Arsenal
Wed 02/03/16 PRL Arsenal 20 : 45 Swansea City
Sat 05/03/16 PRL Tottenham Hotspur 13 : 45 Arsenal
Sat 12/03/16 PRL Arsenal 18 : 30 West Bromwich …
Wed 16/03/16 UCL Barcelona 20 : 45 Arsenal
Sat 19/03/16 PRL Everton 13 : 45 Arsenal
Sat 02/04/16 PRL Arsenal 16 : 00 Watford
Sat 09/04/16 PRL West Ham United 16 : 00 Arsenal
Sat 16/04/16 PRL Arsenal 16 : 00 Crystal Palace
Sat 23/04/16 PRL Sunderland 16 : 00 Arsenal
Sat 30/04/16 PRL Arsenal 16 : 00 Norwich City
Sat 07/05/16 PRL Manchester City 16 : 00 Arsenal
Sun 15/05/16 PRL Arsenal 16 : 00 Aston Villa

Man City still find themvelves in all competitions (Champions League, FA Cup AND League cup). At home they have to play Man Utd and Arsenal, and away to Chelsea and Southampton. Because of playing the League Cup final on the 28th of february, the away fixture to Newcastle will have to be postponed and probably become a midweek game.

Manchester City:
Sun 14/02/16 PRL Manchester City 17 : 15 Tottenham Hotspur
Sun 21/02/16 FAC Chelsea 17 : 00 Manchester City
Wed 24/02/16 UCL Dynamo Kyiv 20 : 45 Manchester City
Sun 28/02/16 PRL Newcastle United PSTP Manchester City
Sun 28/02/16 LEC Liverpool 17 : 30 Manchester City
Wed 02/03/16 PRL Liverpool 21 : 00 Manchester City
Sat 05/03/16 PRL Manchester City 16 : 00 Aston Villa
Sat 12/03/16 PRL Norwich City 13 : 45 Manchester City
Tue 15/03/16 UCL Manchester City 20 : 45 Dynamo Kyiv
Sun 20/03/16 PRL Manchester City 17 : 00 Manchester United
Sat 02/04/16 PRL AFC Bournemouth 16 : 00 Manchester City
Sat 09/04/16 PRL Manchester City 16 : 00 West Bromwich …
Sat 16/04/16 PRL Chelsea 16 : 00 Manchester City
Sat 23/04/16 PRL Manchester City 16 : 00 Stoke City
Sat 30/04/16 PRL Southampton 16 : 00 Manchester City
Sat 07/05/16 PRL Manchester City 16 : 00 Arsenal
Sun 15/05/16 PRL Swansea City 16 : 00 Manchester City

Having seen these other fixtures now I really think Leicester can do this. Come on you foxes!

How is it possible that not a single Leicester defender jumped for that free kick into the box at the end of stoppage time? Last chance for Arsenal to take the win and every defender looked like their feet were in concrete. I don't care if they were a man down the last 30 minutes and were exhausted, someone should try to get that ball!!
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

One mistake can cost you the game... a draw would have been an amazing and possibly fair result. There is certainly no doubt in my mind any more that Leicester are able to more than compete at this level and this is not a one off fluke.

Spurs beat City to back back 2nd on goal difference. An amazing season for them too, Pochettino has done a great job there after their mediocrity and managerial merry go rounds. It really is going to be a nail biter to the end, what a great season this has been!

What a cracking EPL weekend this was! I sat on the edge of my couch for almost 4 hours with both games.

I've been wanting to see Arsenal win a title for ages. I think Wenger deserves one for letting them play the most attractive football in that league. This game however I found myself riding the Leicester bandwagon hardcore. I hope this fairy tale continues. It would've been superb if they got a result, but still it's a game they could lose without shame. The real struggle starts now. Can they hold or extend their lead in the next 9 more accesible games while the others fight eachother and fool around in Europe?
