Mitsubishi Admits Falsifying Fuel Tests

Wed Apr 20, 2016 8:48 am

Here we go again. VW was the first to get busted/admit cheating. This time its Mitsubishi who
admits falsifying fuel tests for about 600'000 vehicles.

Quoting BBC:

Mitsubishi Motors has admitted falsifying fuel economy test data for more than 600,000 vehicles.

Shares in the Japanese car maker closed down more than 15% after it made the announcement.
Mitsubishi, Japan's sixth-largest car maker, sold more than one million vehicles last year but
has less than 1% of the UK market. The company said it has stopped making and selling the
vehicles and had set up an independent panel to investigate.

Company bosses, including Mitsubishi Motors president Tetsuro Aikawa, bowed
deeply at the start of a media briefing in Tokyo.

Can't say I am surprised. Once VW was caught the question was when the next manufacturer
would get caught. I also think that there are more cases waiting to be revealed.

Unlike VW, Mitsubishi's market share is tiny especially in the big markets that really matter, in the US their share is about 0.4%, I wonder what the future holds for them? They already discontinued the Galant, their midsize sedan.

This isn't nearly as egregious as VW. Ford and Hyundai were both found to have elevated mileage claims, admitted it, paid money and moved on. VW is still hiding and lying and has no remedy for what is an emissions cheat.

They do have a remedy, my A6 is scheduled to go to the local dealers next week for it. I've had 3-4 emails since the issue broke informing me on what was happening and a final one a few weeks back with an appointment to have the car fixed.

This isn't the first time Mitsubishi has been caught cheating. Some years back they hid tens of thousands of internal safety problems and got caught big time.

It is amazing that a large company like Mitsubishi could be so stupid, but we seem to see this al the time these days. Maybe some prison time for those involved will help lower the problem.

Not for many of the engines affected in the US. They could do it but it would be too hard and expensive to retrofit the cars for DEF and it then affects mileage and performance, opening them up for more lawsuits. They are expected to miss another deadline in a few days to produce a plan for remedy.

Volkswagen AG and U.S. officials have reached a framework deal under which the automaker would offer to buy back almost 500,000 diesel cars that used sophisticated software to evade U.S. emission rules, two people briefed on the matter said on Wednesday.

The German automaker is expected to tell a federal judge in San Francisco Thursday that it has agreed to offer to buy back up to 500,000 2.0-liter diesel vehicles sold in the United States, the people said.

That would include versions of the Jetta sedan, the Golf compact and the Audi A3.

What you should have in the first place, a 2016 Chevy Volt.

I don't have a garage or driveway, so no place to plug it in.

Move or get a power point installed in your parking place at work. Surely US employers have power outlets for there staff's electric cars, we have about 10 outlets in my works carpark.

I still believe that you should go for a Mazda Miata. At your age you should be having some fun driving a fun car and the Miata fits the bill at a reasonable price. When you're an old man like me you can get an eco box or a mini SUV that is easy to get in and out of.

Test one on a really nice day so you can drop the top and take a test drive with your hubby.

Yeah, because these are both trivial exercises. I'll just pop right down to the dollar store and buy a new house.
