Anzac Day 2016

Sun Apr 24, 2016 11:33 pm

Today marks 101 years since Gallipoli, a profound moment in the heritage of most Aussies and Kiwis. I hope everyone has a good one, especially if you've going to any commemorations, dawn ceremonies etc. Enjoy the ANZAC biscuits too.

Not exactly a happy day, but I think I know what you mean. A day to recognise great loss and sacrifice in war and hope that it never again comes to this.

Just been to dawn service. Moving as always.

We are strange creatures aren't we ?

Despite knowing that war equals untold death and misery, each and every time, we are still at it and going strong

My father was a malaria researcher. He was born in 1900. He became a malaria researcher working for Sir Ronald Ross, the guy who discovered that malaria was spread by mosquitoes.

Inevitably, he was conscripted in !918 and had to fight through the last months of WW1 in the infantry (London Irish Rifles). .

After WW1 he went on working for Ross, working all over Africa and India - very much risking his life in areas where malaria was rife.

He was only 39 when WW2 began, and got conscripted AGAIN - but was 'lucky' only to serve in the 'Home Guard.' But even that involved working in Central London every day - putting up with the bombing - and 'patrolling' a lot of the nights.

My point is that there was never any question is 'Us' being 'still at it..' It was always a matter of politicians starting the wars and the ordinary people having to finish them?

It was a great day for the dawn parade in Auckland and a rainbow thrown in there too even though it didn't rain during the ceremony.

I don't disagree, except to mention that politicians were once "ordinary" people too, yet seem to forget very quickly that their decisions will have terrible consequesnes ......

Having lived through the 1940s, I can't blame the British politicians of the time. Even though my earliest memories include being bombed. Hitler HAD to be stopped.........

And our leaders on both sides of the Tasman have been trying to sell us new wars on the other side of the planet. Quite sad really.
