Today, 33 Aussies, mostly servicemen but also some family members were returned to their homeland after lying in Cemeteries in Malaysia and Singapore for around half a century.
These were the last servicemen not brought home after falling in the service of their country.
In those days the government expected the families to pay to bring their loved ones home, a policy reversed by the Holt government in 1966.

I was surprised to learn that over 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam (around 8,000 at a time).
Any idea when it became the norm to bring service personnel KIA home? Obviously this only started after WW2.

An honor long overdue for these men and families.. I find this story very moving. A common sight these days here, the return of the casualties when possible.
It is better to die on your feet, than live on your knees.
