Yeah. It's a problem for us -- a lot like rampant football hooliganism in Britain. (Oh, oops... is that a stereotype?)

Per Dallas Morning News, it was an officer-involved shooting, and the baggage claim area is currently closed.

According to the mirror link airport police shot a passenger after he "charged him". No mention of the passenger being armed.

Title change?

Dallas is a surprisingly (for those who have limited understanding of Texas) liberal city. Well educated people, pretty well travelled, and their attitudes seem to be more libertarian than truly conservative from my experiences.

I live in Dallas. Yes, it, as well the core of the other major cities (Houston, San Antonio, Austin) are generally liberal. It's everyone else that shifts Texas to conservate at the ballot box.

The shooting didn't happen inside the airport, video shows it being curbside outside baggage claim.

Ditto.

Cops have a rough job, as if the first threat to negotiate were not enough, they also have all the gawkers to manage. There's a lot going on.

Anyone have any more info about this incident instead of bickering? Because from what I read in the article it seems rather disproportionate to shoot a guy brandishing a rock (kicking it bedrock style!) Taser anyone? Pepper spray?

Of course it isn't totally fair to second guess the officer involved since we weren't there, I bet it all unfolded in seconds.

Number of gun murders/100,000 population:
United States: 3.5
Texas: 3.2
United Kingdom: 0.1

As for football hooliganism in the UK, sorry, I couldn't find any quantifications. But nobody would argue that it is more prevalent than in other parts of the world.

So yes, the US has a huge problem with firearms, which actually kills thousands of people. Texas does not stand out above the national average though.

The UK has a problem with hooliganism, although it has receded markedly since the 1990s. However, much fewer fatalities.

As you say, *compared to the US*. But compared to the rest of the civilized world gun ownership and gun murder rates are astronomical.

Having been in a shooting, it's amazing the presence of mind it took me to even realize that it WAS a shooting. It all happens so suddenly and so out-of-context that it doesn't surprise me that people just stand there confused. Usually, it's over before you even know what happened and you're either alive...

...or you're not.

Summary as I understand it from various feeds and reports.

Black male assaulting black female in car, using large rocks.
Domestic, apparently.

Police officer intervenes, issues commands.

Black male charges officer with rock.

Officer backs off, still issuing commands.

Black male charges again.

Officer opens fire.

Black male still refusing to comply.

Officer fires again.

Black male reportedly was yelling "Shoot me!".

Just heard news report on radio that it apparently started with some sort of violent altercation/argument between a man and woman. Sounds like she was in a car and he was throwing rocks. Situation got out of hand when cops tried to break it up.

Well it looks like a perfectly justified police shooting of a criminal engaged in an assault with a deadly weapon.

Trying to stay on topic, but the mindless gun-bashing is annoying.

Reports are coming in that the man was assaulting (or attempting to assault) a woman with a rock. My question is where do you even get a rock in an airport terminal?

And from the video, I just found it amusing that the bystanders were not impressed at all, and that the officer kept saying "Stay down!". Man, after being shot a dozen times I doubt he was going to get up.

Over the last 5-10 years police have been pretty much shooting anyone they want to "in self defense". Heck, in LA they even shot an unarmed released hostage because they were running toward them. Word to the wise: do not run toward a cop, or away from a cop. Just lie down. Otherwise, they will decide you are dangerous and shoot you 27 times.

Going by the pictures, I'd say the woman's life was clearly in danger, and the officer acted in the correct way, especially since the attacker charged at him also.

While I agree that the choice of "civilised world" might have been unfortunate, mozart did give you the hard fact to begin with: there are 32 times more gun murders in Texas than in the United Kingdom (35 times more in the United States overall). So the assertion that Texas and/or the United States "have a problem with gun violence", while arguably relative in worldwide terms, is hardly contestable when coming from the United Kingdom...

That looks awful! Poor driver, it must have been the fright of a lifetime even if she wasn't actually hurt. As for the police response, it sounds like this one got as close to a textbook case as is possible: attacker warned, shot only after he didn't comply and "only" wounded.

After seeing the picture of the car and more details, I think you're right. I was judging by the initial video, and assumed everything had transpired in its entirety right outside the terminal doors.

Charging at a police officer with a rock, at an airport? Suicide by cop?

Actually, in Texas people can carry guns in airports now, they just can't go into the secure area with said gun. This happened outside of security. Good try though.

And by some stats the rape rate in the UK is four times higher than the US, so I guess woman should not travel there...

Statistics, a last bastion for a weak argument.

While early, initial reports are this case was one of a person being threatening and harming others. the fact it was near an airport seems somewhat irrelevant.

95% of the time when a cop fires his gun, it's justified, and it's barely a blip on the news radar. Just those 1% of the rest makes the news, along with another 4% that are justified, but the news media tries to claim otherwise.

Is America a lot different than the rest of the world in regards to citizens and guns? Yes, most definitely. There are a lot of gun owners in America (estimated legal guns owned in America outnumbers number of registered cars). However, taking that into account, shootings are such a tiny, tiny, fraction of gun use in the country.
