CN tower may be torn down

Thu Jul 07, 2016 2:07 pm

There are many fans of this iconic Canadian landmark likely hoping this won't happen but due to high estate prices the CN tower days may be numbered...

How stupid can someone be? That'd be like Trump tearing down the Statue of Liberty to build just another soulless glass and steel condo tower, with yet another Starbucks, Chipotle, and Trader Joe's in the lobby. There's more things in life than just making more money.

First that non-article is fairly dumb.... with may being the key word here. The CN Tower besides being a tourist attractive (that I've been guilty of visiting a few too many times) also serves as a major communications platform for the region -- which is the main reason why it was built. Plus it is an iconic part of the Toronto skyline and I'd hardly think they'd tear it down and replace it with yet another shoddily build condo tower.

Just looking at a map of the area the CN Tower is built (I have not yet been to downtown Toronto).....what else could they really build in it's place? The tower's base takes up a very small footprint. I guess if you demolished the Ripley's next door you could get a large enough footprint to build a very tall condo/office complex, but the tower's footprint alone isn't enough to do anything substantial.

It's like the Space Needle being torn down in Seattle because Googie architecture is not in anymore. I hope it's a bad rumor. It is a landmark and the symbol of a city and a country.

What is google architecture? Space Needle pre-dates Google by a long time...

CN tower is iconic. I was at the base of it a few months ago and would have gone up if the weather was good, but it was crappy.

In case you're not being ironic...
It's Googie (note the letter i), not Google (with a letter L).
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.

Oops!

For those like me who didn't know , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googie_architecture says:

Googie (/ˈɡuːɡi/ GOO-gee[1]) architecture is a form of modern architecture, a subdivision of futurist architecture influenced by car culture, jets, the Space Age, and the Atomic Age.[2] Originating in Southern California during the late 1940s and continuing approximately into the mid-1960s, Googie-themed architecture was popular among motels, coffee houses and gas stations. The school later became widely known as part of the Mid-Century modern style, elements of which represent the populuxe aesthetic,[3][4] as in Eero Saarinen's TWA Flight Center. The term "Googie" comes from a now defunct coffee shop and cafe built in West Hollywood[5] designed by John Lautner.

This would be a shame. I can't imagine the cost of removal would justify the expense. Its a massive building. Has anything been done like that before?

Meh, people say that all the time, but I doubt that many actually believe it.

Crap.... a non-story if ever I heard one. That would be like some engineer saying hey.... if we tear down the White House in Washington we can make more money than leaving it. Almost any older historic building could be torn down and something bigger put in it's place. That doesn't mean it's going to happen. But hey.... make a sensational statement sure to garner a lot of press.... to get your name and your firm's name in the media.
