CLEVELAND — The Republican party came within a whisker of reaching the unity it had long sought Monday. What it got instead was convention floor chaos.

After mounting for weeks, tension exploded into a high-profile fight pitting the Donald Trump campaign and Republican National Committee leadership against a coalition of conservative activists and delegates from the "never Trump” movement.

The two sides were reduced to shouting at each other on national television after party leadership blocked a roll call vote on the convention rules, which virtually guarantee Trump the party nomination by requiring delegates to vote in accordance with their state’s primary or caucus results.

Ahh, the delicious irony of watching REPUBLICAN outrage because they were denied the opportunity to vote on something!

It sounds like the Never Trump movement came a lot closer than anyone thought they would to derailing The Donald.

The Never Trump folks were furious at how they were treated. Who ever came up with that steam ruling plan failure to give any consideration to the intensity of their opponents reactions. Colorado walked out, an ex-Senator called them Brown Shirts, etc. The Never Trumps will find other ways of responding, demonstrating that the simple vote they wanted would have been the wise choice.

This has been a really bizarre first day of the convention.

1) the angry delegates not getting the roll call vote.

2) Marcus Luttrell gives an entire speech without saying Donald Trump's name

3) Scott Baio speaks. Odd enough. Even more bizzare is his line "Make America America again!"

4) A grieving mother directly blames Hillary Clinton for her son's death and says Clinton should be prison

5) The theme of the night is "Make America Safe Again", ignoring that violent crime rates have been almost continuously falling for a quarter century. Property crime for about 35 years.

6) The Milwaukee County Sheriff is now giving a speech that would put both Trump and Clinton to shame. Damn impressive speech so far.

Where have I seen this charade of a vote before......?

I cannot watch them for either side, all bull and blather, nothing changes after all is said and done. My youngest grandson said to me when the Republican Convention was starting today. Isn't this all rigged? I said of course, it is politics and it is all rigged. Trump was correct about that.

The floor fight over the rules was brutally shut down by the party leaders. A lot of behind the scenes arm twisting on a couple of state committees. likely a few key challenging state leaders told they wouldn't get prime Trump Administration jobs or backing for running for office in the future or their careers ruined if they didn't back off. For sure they wanted the illusion of unity, even if Trump loses and likely control of the Senate, the R's will still have overwhelming control of state Legislatures and Governors, or in the US Senate enough numbers to slow down or halt work.
While it is traditional during party conventions to bash the other party and their likely candidate for President, the Republicans are just bashing, not directly offering where they would be specifically different with policy.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the speech theft. (I was going to say snafu, but that's not strong enough). What frame of mind would the speech writing team be in to not even notice that? You gotta love all the facebook and twitter memes out there. "I'd like to thank my speech writers Copy & Paste",

I tell you, sometimes I think this campaign has a cruel trick up their sleeve and they are conning us. They cannot be this careless.

Well, you can't say that Ted Cruz doesn't have some big, brass ones. He tells people to "vote their conscience" and does not endorse Trump during his prime time speech at the convention.

What a mess of a convention for Trump. The floor fight on the first day, plagiarism in Meliana's speech and the campaign looks like dummies trying to deny it, stories flying that Kasich was basically offered the job of President while Trump plays cheerleader, and Cruz shows up Trump in his speech. Should be an interesting final day.
