Coattail Celebrities

Wed Aug 17, 2016 10:54 pm

The quote below is by GASMAN from a post in travel polls and preferences in the thread about aircraft history should forget:
Another one I should have mentioned is the MD-11. I see this as the "Sean Lennon" of commercial airliners - notable only for its heritage without which it would be utterly irrelevant.

So, it got me thinking about other celebrities who got their break because of a more famous and/or more talented relative. Here's a few I can think of - while some of these folks are talented in their own right (while others are not) I am going to guess they got a chance to break into the business because of their relative
Jerry Van Dyke (Dick)
Frank Sinatra Jr and Nancy Sinatra (Frank Sr)
Lorna Luft (Judy Garland)
Bryce Dallas Howard and Clint Howard (Ron)
Rumer Willis (Bruce Willis and Demi Moore)
Angelica Huston (John)
Drew Barrymore (John)
Tahnee Welch (Raquel)
Zach Starkey (Ringo Starr)
Jason Bonham (John)

OK, that's a start, add your own

Paul Hitler tried to get that chain of bowling alleys opened but it just didn't work out for him.

Thomas Rhett (Rhett Atkins)
Oliver Hudson (I think that's his name - he was on Rules of Engagement; he's Kurt Russell's and Goldie Hawn's kid). Sufficiently talented but not mega.
Nicolas Cage - who claims that he didn't use the fact that he's Coppola's nephew to break into Hollywood, but... come on.

I am pretty sure both Paris Hilton and the Kardashians belong in this category.

You can't forget his other spawn then:

Emilio Estevez
Ramón Estevez
Renée Estevez

LOL! None of them are any good except Emillio for his work 1980s.

Speaking of Goldie Hawn's kids, that bring up another - Kate Hudson. Pretty talented actress on her own though

I don't see Liv riding on Steves fame, she got there on her own.

Michelle Pfeiffer isn't Dakotas mum, Melanie Griffiths is.

Michelle's sister DeeDee achieved some fame from her sister.

Kirt Douglas and his son Michael.

Will Smith and his talent free wife and kids certainly ride on his fame.

George clooney probably got a leg up from his mum, the same could be said of Gwyneth Paltro.

Well I disagree about Liv, the modelling jobs via her model mother and then "starred" in an Aerosmith music video in 1993 after which she got a role in a movie despite
neither experience or any kind of acting education. Then in 1998 she got a role in the movie Armageddon to which her father's band proved three songs.
Then the rest of her career is perhaps on own merit.

You are of course correct about Melanie Griffiths though. ;)

Speaking of George Clooney - his cousin Miguel Ferrer got his start playing a younger version of the character played by his father Jose in Magnum P.I.

Sean Harmon also got his start playing a younger version of his father's character in NCIS.

That wasn't the question, though:

So the answer is "almost any celebrity who had a relative who was a celebrity", and we can end the thread there.

That said, parents and relatives help out with jobs all the time, and there's no reason actors/musicians/whatever should be any different.

Actually, Julia has her brother Eric (Emma's dad) who started acting first.

And early in his career, he was pretty darned good. His role in "Star 80" was fantastic. He seemed to go downhill as his career went on.

One more I thought of - and apologies to Star Wars fanboys with this one:
Carrie Fisher - daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher. Other than Princess Leia, her acting career and life in general have pretty much been a train wreck.
