Opinions on recipe - Strawberry pie with mozzarella cheese baked inside

Sun Sep 18, 2016 1:14 am

I know there is the old recipe of apple pie with cheddar cheese on top, however, I came up with an idea of a strawberry pie with mozzarella cheese.

I personally think mozzarella would pair better with the sweet flavor of the strawberries than would cheddar, however, one difference that I would do would be to have the mozzarella be baked as a thick layer inside the pie (1/2 the thickness of the filling), instead of having it being melted on top. I think the flavor combination would be excellent and would give the pie a nice texture when freshly baked.

What does anyone here think about such an idea?

You want 3/4" or 1" deep of solid cheese in a strawberry pie? Sounds gross. I doubt you're going to get any different answers here than you got 10 days ago at one of the other forums you post at. But who knows, maybe Kiwirob has a good recipe. *shrug*

A light drizzle of sweetened cream cheese on top of the pie might work, but nothing along the lines of what you're asking about.

I almost wanna say "It can't be all that different than typical strawberry cheesecake."

But nah, it just doesn't sound very appealing.

I can see the recipe working with Mascarpone, but even though (most supermarket) Mozzarella is fairly tasteless the consistency would not go with something sweet. In my opinion of course, but I've seen deep fried beer in the USA so nothing can surprise me after that.

Strawberries are too sweet. Apple and cheese works because apples have a slightly sour taste, and baking apples like Bramleys are definitely sour so work well with the salty contrast of a good cheese.

Strawberries would be too sickly. Blackcurrants or blueberries would work.

Kiwirob couldn't think of anything more revolting than strawberry pie with or without mozzarella.

Instead of the OP asking stupid questions like this why doesn't he rock on into the kitchen and make it himself??

A food that is rather tasteless and fatty with a fruit that is sweet and a bit citric?

I know what you're aiming for: the pink goo that will eventually come out.

The idea of a strawberry mozzarella pie just sounds disgusting. As someone else mentioned, why not try a layer of mascarpone or sweetened cream cheese. That would work way better than this mozzarella idea.

That is not what I was aiming for at all. I highly doubt the mozzarella would turn pink from the strawberry filling. If tomato sauce (infamous for staining clothes) generally doesn't turn mozzarella orange on pizza or chicken parmesan, I don't see how the strawberry filling would turn the mozzarella pink.

This isn't a good combination to be sure, but pairing cheese and jam is a wonderful thing. My grandpa first introduced me to the idea with a poor man's version of the nobler French pairings. Take an english muffin and toast it. Lay on the butter and strawberry or grape jell and add a slice of cheddar cheese. It's pretty awesome.

Of course these days the idea is to take much better cheese and then drizzle a nice honey or preserve and a piece of sourdough toast for example, or a nice baguette. I like a sharp and/or nutty cheese for this exercise best, say a gruyere or a real stinker like Epoisse or Cowgirl Redhawk. Layer some quality fruit spread on those bad boys and you're in business.

Extrapolating from there I could see you warming a nice roquefort and placing it in a savory crust and drizzle it with honey or maybe a marmalade. I'd try that in a personal serving size so that you're consuming it in one go. I'm not sure that would save so well in the fridge. Good luck bro.

You know what I do when I want to try out new recipe, or when I'm creating a recipe. I prepare the damn thing and see how it comes out.

But mozzarella baked into a strawberry pie? No.

If you are wanting to do a strawberry and cheese combo.

Here are a few suggestions...

1.Basil whipped goats cheese stuffed strawberries with a balsamic glaze
2.Roasted Strawberry and goats cheese puff pastry squares
3. Strawberry and Goats cheese dessert pizza.
4. whipped Greek Feta cheese with honey and Strawberry pastry

Raspberry and cheese is a much better combo than strawberry and cheese. Strawberries are just too sweet.

I've made dishes with strawberry and cheese before, but you need something to temper the sweetness. Balsamic vinegar is great with a strawberry and mozzarella salad. Not sure quite how this would work in a pie though.

I'm known to enjoy a Blackberry Creampie when the occasion presents itself.
