Body modification by a male pilot?

Wed Oct 05, 2016 5:49 pm

hey,

since my 10th, I dream about to become a pilot.
It's a dream for my to fly above the clouds.
So i've decited to start at the flight academy when I'm done with my high school.

But there is one question I have.
I also want a tattoo and a piercing.
I know you can't have them on places which you can't cover.
So I want a tattoo on my rib and a nipple piercing (or something like that)
But is this allowed?
May a male pilot have piercings and tattoos on places which he can cover?

I realy want an anwer so I can take one of them:)

Ultimately as long as the body mods are covered by your clothing I think you are fine. So no neck tattoos (this should just be a blanket rule on that one), no lobe stretching, and if you have arm tattoos a half sleeve is probably as far as you could go. Basically if your employer can never see them while you are in normal clothing they wouldn't know that you had them.

Just don't get so carried away you'll set off the scanners every time you walk thru them, with lug bolts as private piercings.

Any tattoo that can be covered is fine. And probably ear piercings is he most they'll allow to be visible, but you probably won't be able to wear ear rings, depending on the airline.

Nipple piercings however, you do what makes you happy bud. I won't get them because not only do I want holes in my body, my nipples hurt just with the thought of them!

I can't recall if I have ever jumpseated with a female pilot who was wearing earrings. I could imagine the FAA having a problem with them if the earrings could potentially impede with the oxygen mask fitting snugly to the face. It's similar to how you don't see any pilots with more any facial hair than just a moustache - pilot safety could be affected in an emergency.

I've seen EK pilots with beards, and they were clearly European or Australian. Obviously short enough to hug the face and look professional to the point where they most likely wouldn't have a problem with the mask. I have a beard (similar to the aforementioned EK pilots) and I've worn O2 masks in simulators and never had a problem. I can also see studs being ok for ladies, but nothing dangling from the ears. If I do become a pilot (hopefully someday), I'd just be clean shaven, I can't rock a moustache to save my life haha.

I have. Not big dangly ones or hoops, but little studs.

I apologize, bad wording. I have never jumpseated. I have seen female pilots wearing earrings.
