Will Alex Trebek renew his contract after 2018?

Thu Oct 20, 2016 5:16 pm

Currently, Alex Trebek's contract to host Jeopardy is through 2018. It was previously rumored that he would retire after the 2015-2016 season, but in March of 2015 he renewed his contract for two more seasons through the 2017-2018 season. However, next year he will face that decision again.

I wonder, does anyone think Alex Trebek could retire after the 2017-2018 season? He will be 78 years old by the end of that season. From what I read, the shortlist of potential replacements include Matt Lauer, Anderson Cooper, Dan Patrick, and Josh Elliott. If he does retire, I presume the season will probably end with re-airings of the most memorable moments of Jeopardy (some Ken Jennings episodes, the Ultimate Tournament of Champions, Battle of The Decades, and the Watson episodes).

If Alex Trebek does retire after the 2017-2018 season, I wonder if Jeopardy will also get a new set to go with the new host.

I believe they do about 6 to 8 shows a day, so he could do a whole months worth of shows in just a few days and take the rest of the month off or do 2 months of shows in a long week and take the remaining 2 months off so it is not as hard work as it appears, keeps busy for a week and still can enjoy almost full retirement.

Jeopardy! is one of those shows that I don't think would survive without Trebek. And I can tell you two of the four potential replacements would just be horrible -- don't know the other two. Trebek is just so much a part of the show I can't picture it without him. It would be like Wheel of Fortune without Pat Sajak and Vanna White. While it is not impossible to replace an iconic game show host -- I think Drew Carey has shown that with TPIR, it would be harder to do with Jeopardy! IMHO. Somebody like Andy Richter maybe able to pull that off, his performance on Celebrity Jeopardy! at least gives him a ton of credibility. Hell I'd also say that for Louis CK too with his appearance earlier this year.

Just to put my answer in perspective - I remember Art Fleming doing a fantastic job as the show host.

I have no idea how Trebek feels, but when a person no longer enjoys their job, and no longer looks forward to going to do that job - it's time to leave.

Yes, a weeks worth of shows is shot over a single day, but he also spends a couple days in post-production work as the shows are edited and prepared for broadcast. It actually a pretty demanding schedule to get so much in the can. At age 78, Alex has to be slowing down a bit.

I think the show would survive him leaving, but it would take the right host, who doesn't have a 'regular' job. I don't know if Lauer or Cooper would be willing to make Jeopardy their main focus.

I had no idea Jeopardy was even still on the air with new episodes.

I thought he was absolutely retiring. I also thought Neil Patrick Harris was on the list of hosts to replace him. Anderson Cooper would be great. I would not mind seeing him every day. But, then, Alex has had broken bones and still showed up to work, so maybe not.

I'm sure plans for a pink-themed set are already in the works.

Anderson Cooper makes about $15 million per annum, and in his next contract likely $20 million. I don't think Jeopardy pays anywhere near that. Given the nature of news of needing to be somewhere, anywhere, at any time, for any period of time, there's just a limited number of other activities you could pursue.

Neil deGrasse Tyson would be an ideal replacement for Alex Trebek.

FYI, Alex Trebek now roughly makes $15 million a year and is paid more than Anderson Cooper. One of the best jobs in the world.
