Massive New Zealand Earthquakes

Sun Nov 13, 2016 1:05 pm

I realise nobody cares. Um...

It's bad. Really scary. Tsunami has been generated, and we have 500 miles of aftershocks over magnitude 5.0.

I've never been this scared before.

I care, I can imagine that you feel scared, the ground should be stable and not moving around. Good luck my friend.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

We've got tsunamis and it's still shaking over magnitude 5.0.

I've never been scared like this.

Thanks for giving us the head's up. Please do your best to take care of yourself.

Im in Auckland. Felt the first one.

Opened my doors, my couches to anyone who wants to talk or just escape uphill via Twitter. As a very amateur geologist, I know this might be the start of the bad one.

I care. I never had much of a fear of earthquakes/tsunamis living in Southern CA, partly because while near the ocean a safe distance from the SA fault (the big one overdue), high enough above sea level. This year though I am dealing with a minor case of PTSD (totally unrelated to earthquakes) and it has become a big fear for me, mainly though because it is inevitable. My fear though is not so much of the shaking (although it would be if I lived closer to the SA) and damage, it is that all hell will break lose afterwards with 20 million people nearby and severed infrastructures, including water.

I hope everyone in NZ is fine, earthquakes sure are a scary thing. I suppose at least the infrastructure out there is designed to handle them better than in some poorer countries.

I'm extra glad I moved recently. I'm now at one of the highest points in Auckland. It shakes more, but I've put the call out that if anyone is still worried, come and sleep on my couch, my floor, half of my bed....

I know we fired a few shots at each other over the US Election, and we'll never agree there, but thanks for your humanity. I've had to revise my opinion on you.

I rang my dad about 30 minutes ago to ask him, he said what earthquake, mum and dad don't watch tv morning news and the NZ Herald print edition didn't have any news about. Funny that I knew more about it in Norway than they did in NZ.

We can afford disaster relief. All donations taken. But it's the basic services who need money more than emergency.

The big one was a hell yeah. Living on a hill, I'm feeling the light ones a bit more than average.

This is indescribably big. Basically think Dunedin to Auckland, minimum.

The largest measured 7.8 on the Richter scale. That's a huge quake. Two others above 6.0 and several above 5.0. The 7.8 was only 55 miles north of Christchurch, which had that big quake only five years ago. Hopefully this one does less damage by being centered a little farther from population centers.

Hopefully our Navy will send over our new LHDs (Amphibious Assault Ship) full of supplies and workers given that natural disaster relief was going to form part of their purpose.

My thoughts are with all of my Kiwi friends. I hope if you are feeling aftershocks all the way up in AKL that you are putting in feel reports with the USGS. Might help in the analysis of the quakes.

I hope the number of victims is low. TV coverage here has been minimal since something else is the main subject.

There was a video taken by a man in his house, it was shaking like crazy, I have to assume the house was wooden, if my house moved like that I would be crushed by two floors of concrete.

We might be okay given Hamner/Culverden/Kaikoura are rather rural.

But this is well and truly hitting Wellington. Auckland can feel it,

The quake just after midnight was unreal. Best I can compare it to: imagine flying at cruise and asleep. Then you hit severe CAT and the plane just starts bouncing all over the place.

Except there are no seatbelts. Or pilots who know what they are doing. And you're on the floor under the bed listening to your house creak, feeling the earth undulate beneath you, pushing you up, dropping you, pulling you from side to side. Stuff starts flying off the shelves. You can't see anything because it is after midnight. You start wondering if it will ever stop and how much worse it can get.

And then it stops.

And everything is quiet inside.

The house is standing, but with visible cracks around most doorways and outside between the floor you live on and the floor above you. You're shaking, but you don't know if it is from an aftershock or just you being scared to death. You walk outside and see downtown in front of you. It is quite a relief that everything is still standing.

The aftershocks continued throughout the night. Usually about the time you got comfortable and almost managed to fall asleep. And you know that aftershocks are typically smaller and less violent than the first quake, but every shock sends your heart racing. Before you even managed to get to bed, another bad shock hit and you had to take cover under the table.

With the 50 or so quakes we've felt in Wellington today, that brings my total up to around 200 felt. This was by far the scariest one.

And it wasn't even on the Hope Fault--it was on a fault that crosses Hope.

The scenes from Kaikoura look gnarly. But if it was going to happen, I'm glad it happened when it did, where it did. Had the quake been 80 km further north or south, Wellington or Christchurch could look significantly different. As it stands, we just have to wait to have our building inspected by engineers. Thankfully we're not in one of the quarantined buildings in the city.

Best wishes to everyone. Our place is open if needed.

A major 6.3 magnitude aftershock has rocked New Zealand just north of where a massive 7.8 earthquake struck hours earlier.

The aftershock hit shortly after 1.30pm local time on Monday and was centred in Cheviot, some 100 kilometres north of Christchurch, on the South Island. It's one of close to 400 to shake New Zealand over the last 24 hours.

Some 14 hours earlier the country was shaken by the severe earthquake, which killed two people and triggered a tsunami up to five metres high.

All the best to our friends in New Zealand. Commiserations to the families of the two people reported killed.

It's going to be a costly clean up. Roads have been ruptured in places, while in others landslides have blocked them, even pushing a railway line into the sea. Fortunately, so far, the quakes have been further away from built-up areas, otherwise the fatalities and structural damage would be much greater.
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves. - William Pitt Speech, 1783

Well spoken, from someone wearing it worse than me. My place is open if you need it, if the alpine fault really goes. My place is legit a "head for the hills" option.

I finally completed a Felt Report. Only because I could finally link a shake on GeoNet to the one I know I felt.

Then a bigger one pops up on GeoNet and I might have reported the wrong one

I rang my dad about 30 minutes ago to ask him, he said what earthquake, mum and dad don't watch tv morning news and the NZ Herald print edition didn't have any news about. Funny that I knew more about it in Norway than they did in NZ.

I know we have never agreed on here — on anything — but I'm genuinely glad to read that you and your family are okay.

Your parents' reaction surprises me; the quake was so intense and at a relatively shallow depth that I'd just assumed the whole country shook.

I have hit my head on the headboard far too often.

A few years back, we had a 4.3 about a mile from my office. Hardly a 7.8 but enough to give the building a good shake and rattle all the cupboards. I happened to be standing in an exam room with my patient and my medical student when it happened.

The patient (seated) and I (standing) both said: "Woah! Did you feel that?" My medical student (standing not half meter from me) said, "feel what?" It's amazing how different people can have completely different experiences in an earthquake even when they are very close to each-other.

My thoughts go to all in NZ, hope everyone and everything turns out OK (*I have seen reports that two have been reported dead).

As an interesting visual, both humorous and "wow" check out this image of some cows that became stranded when the land around them subsided during the quake:

If they had fallen do you suppose the farmer would have been crying over spilled milk?
They must have been terrified when the earth started to MOOOOOOve.
I wonder how they will hoof it out of there.
And of course, during the earthquake, that must have been quite a milkshake.

Please! I might as well be asexual given the amount of action I see. I did nearly have my exes 17 year old sister in my bed last night, however I would have been on the couch and I managed to contact her family to make sure she was calmed down and not trying to run away.

My dad and I sat through a 4.7 a few months ago. We just sat there looking at each other, and afterwards agreed if it had gone longer or got worse, we were going to get out. To be fair, the place we were in survived the big ones in Christchurch when I lot of other places in the same street fell over. I nearly bricked myself, but played it cool when I checked the rest of the place by just saying "You guys good?".

The funniest part was it went to breaking news on the BBC, and everywhere else. The only people not panicking were us in Christchurch. I was mildly concerned the next day when, while riding the Christchurch gondola I realised that the epicentre of the quake the night before was maybe half a mile from the base. I only pointed that out to my dad after we got to the top and had a glass of wine in hand.

Edit: I effed up the quote but you get the idea

I realise nobody cares. Um...

It's bad. Really scary. Tsunami has been generated, and we have 500 miles of aftershocks over magnitude 5.0.

I've never been this scared before.

I care. Stay safe. I experienced several earthquakes growing up in Southern California. There's really no getting used to them. Getting under a desk or door frame really is good advice.
