Is it Respectable for the Adelaide Crows to copy the tune of Halls Of Montezuma.

Thu Dec 01, 2016 7:07 am

After realizing that our fellow commonwealth brothers copied an American song to honor their Marines. I wonder how the Adelaide Crows got away with it and how quick an Aussie and a American can get into a fight here. Eh?

Love, from Canada.
Well uh, I obviously decided to refine this but i dont know how.

Borrowing things has a long history and is a well-established tradition. If history and tradition makes for respectability, I guess so.

Isn't the music to 'Halls of Montezuma' based on the Gendarmes Duet from Offenbach's 1867 version of his opera Genevieve de Brabant? The melody itself could even be based on an even earlier Spanish folk song. The Crows borrowed from the US Marines, who borrowed from the French, who may have borrowed from the Spanish. I wonder where they got it from?

basically who cares, it's music, we already know living artists have trouble asking people to stop using their music, so why would anyone give a crap about a centuries old piece of music?

Anyone ever listened closely to God Save the Queen (UK ) and 'My Country Tis of thee'(First US national Anthem)?

I'm outraged. I demand someone be fired over this and a total boycott of all advertisers who support this team.

Isn't that what we do nowadays?

I forget what AFL team it is, but they have a fight song or whatever that sounds like the Notre Dame fight song. My high school in the US, our fight song was the same as the University of Michigan. Just think of it as sampling, like much of the crappy top 40 music does these days.

That manufactured franchise is always trying to claim history that doesn't belong to them.

Shit club no history.

Sydney Swans use the Notre Dame song but just changed the words.

I should've known that since I live in Sydney, and not too far from the SCG. But ever since moving the Sydney, I have not caught AFL fever.

And the Brisbane Lions have adapted La Marseillaise as their theme song. I wonder if the French should be outraged.

So basically the Australians love stealing history. No wonder they stole a Hispano Suza Cannon from the British and used a American Double Wasp on the Boomerang

There is no AFL fever to catch in Sydney (until 2009 there was only one Sydney AFL team). Victoria, especially Melbourne, is where AFL fever exists. Rugby League is more popular in Sydney. Go the Roosters!

Yeah, I caught NRL fever. I live in Zetland, so go the Bunnies. Although the past few seasons have been very lackluster.

Listen to the original tune of the Marine Corps hymn... as mentioned, its from a Jacques Offenbach opera.

Ironically, the song is about two lazy-ass police officers who pretend to be bold and courageous.

The music of the USMC Hymn was 'borrowed' from the opera rewritten in 1867 - specifically the Gendarmes' Duel from Geneviève de Brabant by Offenbach.

It was a popular song, and adapted to the USMC focused lyrics. The song may have been copyrighted at one or more times by the USMC, however, copyright law prevents the US federal government agencies from holding copyrights. Several composers do hold copyrights for different arrangements of the song.

(The US Department of Interior, National Park Service is currently involved in a major legal battle with some long term contractors who claim to own the Trademarks to names like Yosemite, Yellowstone, Phantom Ranch, Grand Canyon, etc.)

I don't really care how a club in Australia uses the music or similar sounding words of the USMC Hymn - however I know many former Marines who would express their opinion - strongly. Hopefully with less than strategic level weapons.

So basically. One uses one to one using another. Sounds like Disney if copyrights weren't extended eh?
