Career change/advancement- in a different field (advice needed)

I am currently looking to return to a previous line of work
Which is in a field I am not currently in.

I may have an offer shortly to return the field but not in my ideal role.

My question is: is there value in currently being in the field working full time as opposed to out of it while looking for that ideal role I want to be in? Or does it not matter?

I have been in the desired role previously.

Hard to judge without more information. Let's say you want to be an airline route planner, will working as an airline agent help your chances, unfortunately no. You might want to be an oil company project planner. Just an example.

The minute you take a less prestigious job, you get anchored at that price/prestige level by that company. It hinges on whether the "less than ideal" job is seen as a good preparation for the job you want. If it's not a good path, then it might actually make your chances worse than they are now.

I don't know why you wish to keep secret important facts about the field, your position in it, and the length of time you have been away from it.

Has the world changed while you have been away from your old job?

Are you still fully qualified to work in that field/position?

I retired early when I was forced to leave my government agency due to a statute of employment limitation. I was a senior computer systems analyst at the Unites States Peace Corps.

Problem was, I worked during the mid-80s to mid-90s on what were termed mainframe computer legacy systems. At the time I had to leave the agency (and for a few years previously) the entire world of computer programing had changed to new computer languages and the newfangled personal computers being placed on every desktop.

Quite frankly, I was obsolete and would have had to go to school for at least a year to learn new tricks of the trade. There was no chance that I would then be hired at my old salary level.

Are you by any chance in that kind of situation?

Too cryptic a question. Where you waiting for a plumbing job, but worked as a waiter?
