NK and the Bomb: An Atmospheric Test Likely?

Thu Nov 02, 2017 9:59 pm

The recent rumors around the North Korean nuclear program say they will conduct an atmospheric test of a (thermo)nuclear device. A CNN article I just read said that test may include the missile flying over Guam before detonating in-atmosphere.

Would NK really be that stupid so as to send a live nuclear weapon even in the general direction of the US or a territory? How would the US respond? Previous calculated trajectories of NK missile tests by the US and allies have shown that those meant no harm, but one shot toward Guam even if meant to bypass it would surely be seen as a true military strike, yes? Or would the US know of the true intent of the launch from an early phase of the flight? ... index.html

Well, they've just done another launch and this particular missile seems to be far more capable than the others if is to be believed: ... dc7a516cd2

Including for the right-conservative viewpoint.

How would the US respond to such a test? Probably nothing would be done - I can't see that Trump will go in guns blazing. The next launch after this one could very well be the scenario you are thinking of however.

Let 'em test all the missiles they want, but they're also going to be held responsible by the international community should one of them fail over another sovereign country.

As far as atmospheric testing goes, I believe any atmospheric test held by the DPRK would immediately result in calls for military force by the UN to dismantle their program.
