What ever happened to the new presidential limo ?

Wed Mar 21, 2018 10:02 pm

Hasn't every president gotten a new limo at the start of their term ? Trump has been using Obama's limo for well over a year now. Have there been delays or development problems with the new fleet ? We haven't heard a peep since last September.

Did the car have some unforeseen issue ???

I'm surprised that there aren't COTS (commercial off the shelf) vehicles for this purpose, like Mercedes Guard edition cars or even the armoured BMW vehicles. That would be a lot cheaper.

Those vehicles are nice, but their entrance would be less impressive:

The level of armor that that the Secret Service requires is too much for a regular car to be retrofitted, it has to be designed from scratch. Everyone else simply uses a Mercedes pullman guard.

The Beast is basically just a thinly-disguised APC... no COTS solution even comes close.

Part of the problem is probably that German cars are preferred by "regular" people for such use, but a US president can't ride in anything other than a US branded car, so there is no COTS available anyway. Then they like to put useless things in the car to make it more like a tank, wouldn't be surprised to see James Bond like AA guns or missiles under the hood of the next one.

As an off-roader that makes me cringe. A supposed trained driver never ever ever approaches a bottom out situation head on. Always at as close to a 45' angle as possible if not more.

hehe.
so that is why the US Limo has all these guys running along : to give a shove in case.
( How did they fix the "no go due to wrong fuel" issue for the beast : large sticker "Diesel Only" ? :-)

apropos shove:
long time ago for an "innovative" maglev coal transport system we were commended by customer representatives
for having people ready behind some containers to give a shove in case the prototype got stuck. ( there was
an issue with the segmented track design initially.)

The Beast has as much in common with the Cadillac it is supposedly shaped after as a Toyota Camry has with the cars racing for Toyota in Nascar... the outside shape is purely cosmetics, they could put something resembling a Mercedes S-Class, or a Citroen DS, if they wanted to,

That is one thing that Democrats and Republicans probably agree on. It would be politically unpopular for the President have a limo that wasn't a US brand car. The republican base would freak out for it not being patriotic and the old school union Democrats would freak out for the same reason and the fact that it was a foreign car. Millennial Democrats in California could probably care less, but rust belt union guys would blow a gasket.

The US Presidential Limo is based on a medium duty truck chassis and engine with some mods, with a custom made body with a few trim parts from a production Caddy, If there are delays, it might be due to late changes needed for Trump, new risks and maybe suspension mods to include an ability to raise the raise the car due to the long wheelbase and weight to go over rough surfaces, curbs and driveways.

Is it multifuel or can the Secret Service still sabotage it by way of filling up with petrol ? :-)

Woo, it looks hilarious.
Sorry the design doesn't "come together" very well. I know that is secondary to its "I'm a tank actually" requirement but still... It looks like they merged a Caddy with a Lincoln with a London taxi.

If GM has finished with the Beasts it might be profitable touring back the Fleetwood. A few may be a bit more protective than the stock Fleetwood. Buyers from various countries would probably need a few, corporate execs might want a loaded one after threats are made, I can sees Caddilac providing short time leases when the protection version is needed. There will also be basic street Fleetwoods for the semi wealth who just want a flash ride. With the prime beasts to be used for #1 and #2 GM should be able to negotiate an exemption for fuel effeciecny for the entire fleet

Off topic, but does anyone know why they always use the Pier 6 Heliport for the President when the one on E34th is much closer to the United Nations? The one on Pier 6 seems much more difficult to secure considering it has only one exit.

It only looks short because it is so bulky and tall. It's basically a truck, not a limo. It definitely looks 23 ft.+.

The new one looks better than the last one, that bar was set pretty low.

Probably had to beef up the suspension and widen the doors, to make room for Cheeto's girth.

The heliport on E 34th is the size of a postage stamp that cannot handle Marine One and all the other vehicles and helicopters needed for a presidential visit.

But when the President arrives, it's only Marine One that lands there anyway. The entourage and gear arrives beforehand. If they need the space for the Chinooks they could handle that at Pier 6 and then just shuttle everything over FDR to 34th and pick up the President there.

I don’t see any relevance of Mercedes products. This isn’t even a car. This is an MRAP type truck (US leads that field) that has been restyled as a US luxury sedan. It looks a little bit frumpy. Other leaders are easy to threaten if their car does not have a hull to deflect explosives.

If the leader ( of a democratic state and by self acclaim of the free world ) needs
this kind of protection he is a massive failure at his job.
