Yanny or Laurel

Thu May 17, 2018 12:48 am

The biggest mistake made by most human beings: Listening to only half, understanding just a quarter and telling double.

It's also on CBC.ca, CNN, New York Times.

I hear laurel.

Just like I saw (correctly) that the dress was white and gold. Meh.

Not sure how it's spam? It's from a local TV channel here.

I find it intriguing, especially since i can only hear Yanni. But I guess in 30 years, I may hear Laurel.

Not spam.

Yanni all the way.

But I guess I'm bi since I have heard it both ways. Yanni earlier in the day and Laurel later.

What you will hear also depends on the speaker(s) on your device. Try to hear it on mobile phone, headphone, and PC speakers. If the speaker is better at producing low frequencies (woofer), we tend to hear "Laurel". Speakers that are better at producing high frequencies (tweeter), we tend to hear "Yanny". On multiway speaker systems, we might hear both. Try to play with your equalizer as well. Try to give emphasize on the low or high frequencies.

Does anyone ever stop and think why things like this are publicized so much?

While at the grocery store I played the clip on my phone and heard Yanni. I came home, played it again on my phone, and clearly heard Laurel.

After reading afterburner's reply, I played the OP's clip on my computer and I heard Laurel (try as I might, could not hear Yanni)...and I played the clip again on my phone and heard Laurel.

I’ve heard both. At first I only heard laurel and couldn’t comprehend how anyone could hear yanny. And then of course I played it again and only heard yanny. Totally nuts.

I stumbled across a link earlier today that had a little embedded player that allowed you to modify the sound clip. I heard "yanni" yesterday when they played the clip on the radio, and then "yanni" again when I heard the clip on this website I'd found. But, when I modified the sound clip, I heard "laurel." When I reset the clip to the original version, I still heard "laurel," but I could heard "yanni" very softly in the background.

As I understand it, at a high level, both sounds are there, but it's a matter of how the original sound clip was created that "yanni" exists at all. Something to do with the clip actually being a recording of a recording with distortion.

I can only hear something yannyish if I pull the slider all the way to "yanny" and hear something like eee-ya-nic

I know it's supposed to say Laurel, but all I hear is Yanny unless there's filtering applied. Maybe the half dozen ear operations should have clued me in that my hearing is abnormal.
