Do you live in Sydney along the parade route? Otherwise if it's not your cup of tea why are you watching the parade? From your comments above you imply you saw all the floats, the giant penis, etc. so obviously it was more than just a passing glance at the parade. ;)

Evangelical TV preachers aren't my cup of tea and therefore I don't sit down on a Sunday morning and watch them, each to their own.

No I don't live in Sydney. I watched about 10 minutes of it on tv a few years ago and that was enough for me.

I'm just asking a question to get a better understanding. I'm not advocating it be banned or stopped. And I don't watch it.

Thought this might be a good place to get some insight into the world of gay.

Now you have me curious. I had heard all these things about SF Pride and how fun it is and how great and so on. We went and all it is, is charging to be able to walk down the street and pay even more to buy overpriced, watered down drinks. And, on Sunday, there are a bunch of topless women and well built, jock strap wearing men. That's it. I don't understand it but if it floats your boat, go for it. Maybe there is something more in Sydney?

That's the thing though, we 'gays' are not really any different to the 'straights'!!! There is no gay world to explore imho!!!!

As stlgph said, there is a straight pride in New Orleans where the straights put on a parade just as sexual as the gays. Download some straight porn, it's just as 'filthy' if not more so than gay porn. I work with a bunch of straight guys, they make my hair curl with their sexual exploits!

Us gays come in all the colours of the rainbow, just as straights come in all the colours of the rainbow. We're pretty much all the same...human!!!!

Are you saying the new Orleans Mardi gras are specifically a celebration about being straight?

I wasn't aware of this.

I'm not talking about porn. We are taking about a public event celebrating a specific sexual orientation.

Ofcourse there are all sorts of people talking about and doing all sorts of things in their private lives, I'm not talking about that.

I have no ducking idea what the New Orleans mardi gras is about, I'm an Aussie, but I've googled it and seen the x rated pics!!!!! Plenty of public nudity, debaunchery as far as i can tell from the pics. Doesn't appear to be any different to a gay pride parade!!!

I never claimed Mardi Gras was celebrating heterosexuality!!!! Just that the New Orleans mardi gras seams just as sexual as any gay pride I've seen. Who gives a flying duck what the mardi gras is about really!!!!

Isn't that what Freaky is complaining about anyway... the debaunchery!!!! A skank is a a skank and all!!!

EDIT:

I had always heard June is Pride Month because that was when the Stonewall Riots happened and the "beginning" of the LGBTQ equality movement. I think a lot of that has gotten lost over the years as corporate sponsorship and porn have taken over. IMO, there was a time in the 1980s when we had a great opportunity to educate the world about us. But, evangelicals took control of the conversation and spread lies about "gay cancer" and how evil and sinful homosexuals are. We have had to fight that ever since. And still are.

Sorry to be flippant. But I suppose is does matter what the Pride is about. I watched a documentary on AIDS in the 80's and how it affected the gay community and how the rest of the world turned their backs on the gays. Putting the debaunchery aside gay pride is important and a big ducking deal!!! I hope gay pride remains a thorn in the side of religious bigots till the end of time!!!

If that is a reason you support gay pride, then we'll never reach equality. When you look at it, both the religious community and the gay community are not so different. Both preach tolerance, but never practice it. They advocate for inclusion, but rarely follow through. To dissent in their communities is to betray their mission. They want government to press their issues while silencing any that go against them.

How about hoping that gay pride remains a symbol of what freedom is all about: celebrating who you are while remembering those who weren't able to?

I beg to differ. Obviously you weren't raised in a religious household. I lost my family and was kicked out of home even after taking care of my dying mother because I was gay. Duck the religious!!!

I'm sorry eisteinboricua, but if you think the religious community and the gay community aren't so different then you're living on another planet!!! I've experienced bigotry from my religious family and at work from religious people and I'm not even outwardly gay!

You just proved my point about not practicing tolerance. A normal person, although hurt by their family, would seek to move on with their life instead of having a vendetta against all religions.

You may be right. Rosa Parks should have just moved on with her life and accepted the back seat on the bus. Those two guys should have just moved on with their life and accepted the snickerdoodle instead of the wedding cake. Sorry but I'm going to fight against any belief that says I'm lesser, or am destined for eternal punishment because of something I had no control over!!!

What you just said to me is on par with what was said to me when the marriage equality debate was happening in Australia. Why can't you gays just be happy with a civil union? Why do you have to take marriage, a religious tradition and ruin it? (The Anglican church spent something like a million dollars fighting against us gays instead of donating that money to the homeless)

I suppose the reason certain parades, gay related or otherwise, are highly sexual is because people like sexuality and celebrating that can be fun. And the way that it can be upsetting to folks only adds to the fun I suppose. I just fail to see what’s wrong or offensive about sexuality that’s visual and in a public place.

Even in considering the chance for kids to see it in a parade, I can’t see how they would be harmed by it in any way, especially if their patents explained the context.

Plus, I assume the young people I’ve see here in SF during pride week that were with their parents are clear on what’s going on and not the type of be offended by gay things.

Oh my lord. The trauma of being kicked out of your home for something completely beyond your control, the hurt, the shame, and often - the homelessness, financial instability, and ensuing depression and anxiety. But yeah, sure.. "move on" normal gays.

Honestly, your parents have a lot to answer for. Who raised you? Wolves?

That Muslim/Christian/Jewish friend? DUCK THEM! I can't be friends with them anymore.

I love how people generalize. Gays can generalize about religious folks:

TL;DR if the beef is with his parents and/or family, there's no need to include everyone else in it; you may be surprised by how many religious people (from all major religions) are out there who are accepting.

Yeah, sure. But why is it so overtly sexual? I get a sexual angle to it. Mardi Gras, Halloween, Labor Day, what have you. Why is there so much emphasis on well built men in bulging jock straps? Not that I mind, but I am just saying....

The Christian church I was raised in didn't really care about people's sexuality. They care more about getting them into Heaven. I know there are churches that do not feel the same, so I don't talk about religion around gays or LGBTQ around churches.

Oh good Lord.

You asked a question, and quelle surprise, you weren’t interested in the answer until it gave you some opportunity to make some ridiculous statement like that.

And, since you’re you, you’ve essentially implied here that someone who doesn’t even take part in parades watches hardcore porn with children he likely doesn’t have.

You should attend one, if they’re legal where you live, and see that what you seem to think is representative of gay people’s daily life of depravoty is one dimension of such celebrations.

Not that I’m implying that the majority of people who act in such ways one day a year shouldn’t be allowed to do it. Hell no. You ask a seemingly innocent question so you can equate Pride celebrations with watching porn with your children? Try completely abandoning your transparently fake efforts at nuance and just come out and say what you believe. Would save us all a bunch of time.

You should be banned. You are nothing but a sh*t disturber. I wouldn’t be surprised if you used to be called pvjin. And you can laugh with your friends that you “triggered” one of those silly pansy a*s liberals.

If I believed in reporting posts, yours would be the first I was strongly compelled to do so.

Shows how much myself and the left differ.

Yes, I disagree with how overly sexual the Sydney Mardi gras are. I don't think it does the gay cause any good if it is designed to garner support from the wider public. I'm sorry if this is offensive to you. Ive also stated that although I don't agree with it, I don't expect it to be banned or censored in any way. It's not for me, but I'll just not tune in.

You on the other hand, disagree with me and call for my being banned. Typical reaction from the left when someone doesn't agree with their beliefs.

No different to religious zealots. Shut down any discussion of certain aspects of their beliefs that don't suit their agenda.

Go ahead and ban me. The terrorists have won

In the context of this conversation, I am actually with Freakysh on this one. I get that Pride Parades and Sydney Mardi Gras are adult celebrations and adult things happen and, as long as it is consenting adults, it is fine. But, how are twinks in jock straps or topless women riding motorcycles a teachable moment for kids? "Those nearly naked, semi-aroused men shooting vodka from penis cannons? Well, in 1969...." It just does not work. Parents will bring their kids because the parents think it is something kids should learn or would have fun at. Because Disneyland is so 1990s.

And as far as the San Francisco parade goes (or really any other day in the Castro), that's the tame stuff. That's the main reason I grew to detest San Francisco after living there for 13 years.

I would imagine a fair number of level-headed gays hate the place as well; it nearly invites people to hate gays when they otherwise wouldn't.

Yeah, the Sydney Mardi Gras may have its occasional moments of men and women in skimpy outfits, but nobody is naked, nobody is riding around on a giant phallus. It's a family event that literally has a rainbow families section in it.

This is all playing into the ancient and disgusting suggestion that homosexuality equals pedophilia. Not interested, Seb.

"Oh my lord. My parents are religious fanatics and kicked me out. Therefore, all religious people are fanatics and have the same hatred, and must be taken out. DUCK ALL OF 'EM!"

That United Church of Christ that welcomes gays? DUCK THEM! They're religious and must be taken out.
That Muslim/Christian/Jewish friend? DUCK THEM! I can't be friends with them anymore.

I love how people generalize. Gays can generalize about religious folks:

Take a look in the mirror, pal. You're talking to a gay christian.

I never mentioned religion, that's all your own paranoia. I paid due respect to the extreme trauma experienced by children who through no fault of their own find themselves homeless as a result of parents who have an irrational hatred of homosexuality.

Speaking of irrational, over to you for a response, "einstein".

These over the top parades have done a lot of damage to the community. I find them pretty bad way to"celebrate" pride.

Please explain. I can see "because A, B, and C happen, logic dictates that R is next" logic from certain people. I also see some parents thinking this is a cultural event to share with children. Some parts of it are. Other parts are definitely not.

You're missing my point, and I wasn't addressing you in particular. I'm just saying it's "irrational" to group all religious people as people with hatred just for the actions of a few people. I am an atheist, but even I have learned to not generalize. I am not minimizing the impact and burden of what religious nut job family members do to their own kin; I'm just saying the beef is just WITH them; no need to generalize, just like we can learn to distinguish between your every day Muslim and the radical terrorist using Islam as a cover.

Can we at least agree on that?

Oh GIVE ME A BREAK, Freaky. The terrorists have won because someone can argue that someone who repeatedly exhibits racist and homophobic behavior should be banned? Who knew that ISIS was all about the gays and protecting minority rights? With your flair for ridiculous melodrama, I'm surprised you're not one of us.

You should be banned because you're nothing but a provocateur and it's clear to see that this is some sort of social experiment to you. You asked a question, which you know you had zero interest in even beginning to understand the response, then latch on to your first opportunity to imply that a Pride parade is akin to watching porn with children. PUHLEEZE. It's obvious you've never been to one, but you have some sort of prejudiced (oooooh . . . a favorite word of the far right) conception in your mind, and you have transposed that on to an entire community. How did you expect your comment to be received? You state to someone who states (s)he thinks that Pride parades are an open display of sexuality and OK by them, "Well you must think that watching porn with children is fine, too."

I'm not surprised, though. When you were pvjin (last seen 9 months ago . . . what a coincidence, hey freakysh, who joined 10 months ago), it was all about Black Lives Matter and associating anyone who had a genuine ("sincerely held") interest in peacefully protesting police brutality was an "ungrateful thug," and you got banned back then for your typical provocative behavior by putting an MLK quote in your signature. These days your MO hasn't change much. A lot of energy spent telling people who post about Trump too much in your view to "get over it"--how would you categorize people who post belittling contrarian views just as often, especially when said person isn't even an American. And don't bullsh*t us some more with some feigned innocence, "I'm interested in having a dialogue," just like your feigned concern about what "damage" Pride parades do to the gay community's public image. BULLSH*T.

I personally don't give a crap how Pride parades make you feel, nor do I give a crap about how Black Lives Matter protests make you feel, nor do I care about how you feel about abortion, nor do I care about how you feel about religious cakers, nor do I care about what you think about people who are just a tad bit bothered over the Liar-in-Chief. You, for whatever reason, seem to want to drive your prejudiced view of the world down everyone's throat. Let me ask you . . . WHY?

This is just a game to you--just admit it and give up the ruse.

Amen, people are trying to make an entire community accountable for the behavior of few, or better yet, their own completely prejudiced conceptions. But this is how these things typically work when the far-right is involved . . . "You're OK, black person, but why are all of the homeless black people? I love your pupusas, but why are all El Salvadoreans members of MS-13? You may be undocumented but you're one of the good ones so you can mow my lawn. Aren't you concerned about how these people make you look?"

These things aren't even worth discussing. It's honestly disturbing that we are.

If you want to discuss, there are plenty of alt-right sites out there to do so. I think this site can make a choice to not condone such flagrantly provocative behavior.

Um, OK.

A lot of faith you have in your fellow man, huh?

It may give a certain group more fodder for them to rationalize why an entire group of people doing no harm to others are somehow depraved, mentally disturbed, in need of rehabilitation, what have you, but I can assure you that they were already against us to begin with.

If you're speaking for yourself, well, I'd say you have a problem.

I’m still not sure what is so bad and dangerous about young people seeing sexuality in a parade? What bad might happen anyway. It’s only bad when a parent frames it that way. My folks never ever hid sexuality from me and I’m relatively normal and not into anything negative or harmful at all. In fact, I’m relatively boring. It’s normally the ones who were shielded from sexuality that become deviant in harmful ways.

Just for the record, I’m a straight guy in SF that deejays so I’m close with the gay community and am quite supportive of it all.

For me, it's a personal level I have.

My wife and I aren't sexual in front of our kids, aside from a simple peck or hug. Showing affection in front of the kids is good and shows them how a man and woman should treat each other.

We aren't sexual in front of friends, family or in public. We don't discuss our sex life with friends or family. It's something that is personal and I think should stay that way.

I then extend this thought process to something like a Mardi gras. If I was celebrating our marriage publically, I would never think to do that by having my wife straddle an inflatable penis whilst I thrust my hips in her direction wearing a g string.

This is why I ask why does the Mardi gras community feel it necessary to celebrate their sexuality in this way. Dare I say it, but to me it comes across as very immature and insecure.

So again, and I absolutely respect your personal choice regarding the levels of affection you display, but what is actually bad or negative about overt sexuality? I too am quite private but still, I’m not sure what’s bad or wrong about it being in the open. And I ask this not to prod or annoy people, but really, what’s bad about sexuality in the open? What negative consequences come from it? There may be some that I’m just not aware of so maybe that’s it. But still, when I consider sexually repressed groups, or those that seems against it often come out with the truly disturbing things such as the Catholic Church scandals or anti-gay politicians in airport - MSP - bathrooms.

I'm not against sexuality, or teaching children about sexuality. But there's a time and place and there's a way to do it.

The point I was trying to make with hardcore porn and letting children watch was that acceptable behaviour is relative. I'll assume you disagree with this behaviour, but let's say someone sees nou issue with it. They genuinely think it is ok and does no harm. I think you would probably question it, as I am with the Mardi gras. We just have a different level of filter. I don't think children need to be exposed to it and some things are best left in the bedroom.
