Your Thoughts On The 2018 F1 Season So Far?

Tue Jun 12, 2018 6:56 pm

Good afternoon! I'm not sure how many F1 fans are on this website, but I would love to get your thoughts on the 2018 Formula 1 season so far. To me, the season is quite interesting, I am hoping to see Ferrari win the championship. Can't not wait for the race at Paul Ricard!

It has been a more interesting season than before, more competition. For our local champion, it has been quite a disappointing season, not in the last place because of what Max did.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Yeah its been really good, though the race at Canada was a snoozefest. Everyone said that the Halo was going to make F1 unwatchable, but it's actually fine. I hope Seb can win the championship this year. Nice to see Honda doing fairly well and I'm enjoying McLaren's woes also.

Haven't watched a single race.

Did watch a video of the Tyrrell Project 34 at Imola though. Lovely machine.

Nice Grand Prix of Austria. Max Verstappen won after a remarkable race. He begins to turn around his season.

Problem is that noone apart from Vettel, Kimi, Bottas and Hamilton can win the championship as their cars wont allow that. This is what hopefully will change after 2021.

Even if Red Bull gets a win or two they cannot still be considered serious contenders for the title.

Let's see what Silverstone brings us...some rain hopefully? :)

Austria was a great race. We need more races where a marginal one stop or a two stop strategy is required. May the tires ever blister!

Dull as dishwater, even the four times world champion is calling the current racing cars "crap".

The halo is awful, ruins most on board pictures as you can no longer see the front of the effing car.

It could well be. Stunning drive from Hamilton, who might have won even if Vettel didn't self-destruct.

Greetings Folks,
This years F1 is developing into competition between teammates.
The most obvious is between the Red Bull drivers while Force India are not too far behind.
Young Daniel ,the master of the "overtake" ( reference to the weekends race at Hungering ) is very entertaining as distinct to his teammate who takes no prisoners at times in his efforts to forge ahead.
The summer break is a well earned rest for both drivers and viewers
Let's just enjoy the balance of the season without unnecessary criticisms .
By the way the Indycars are also very competitive in the rivalry between teammates.
Cheers,325i.

It has been confirmed that Daniel Ricciardo will leave Red Bull Racing at the end of the season:
Daniel Ricciardo has advised us that he is to leave the Team at the end of the 2018 season.

Having joined the Red Bull family in 2008 as a member of the Red Bull Junior Team, with whom he won numerous junior titles, Daniel made his F1 debut in 2011 at the British Grand Prix. After two seasons with Scuderia Toro Rosso, Daniel joined us in 2014 and to date has brought the team seven victories, 29 podium finishes, two pole positions and 904 championship points.

Commenting on Daniel’s decision, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner said: “We fully respect Daniel’s decision to leave Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and we wish him all the best in his future. We would like to thank him for his dedication and the role he has played since joining the Team in 2014, the highlights of course being the seven wins and the 29 podiums he has achieved so far with us.

“We will now continue to evaluate the numerous options available to us before deciding on which driver partners Max Verstappen for the 2019 season. In the meantime, there are still nine races left in 2018 and we are fully focused on maximising every opportunity for Max and Daniel for the remainder of the season.”

Can´t help but think Ricciardo could well be the laughing third man in the fight next year.

Red Bull pushed Renault beyond the FIA´s 15 May deadline for contract renewal & when we did hear they were going to Honda we heard later on that the deal was still being negotiated with Honda. Seems to me Renault saw which way the wind was blowing & helped put Honda in the negotiating driving seat by not giving Red Bull more time beyond the deadline. I´m not that convinced that the current Honda is on par with the Renault. I could see Red Bull having a serious fight on it´s hands with the Renault powered teams next year. 3rd in the constructors championship could become an interesting fight.
I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences.

Unbelievable, Singapore 2017 all over again for VET.
Why desperately defend track position in turn 2 at a track like Monza.....in the dominant car!??
He would have blasted passed LH44 with DSR in lap 3.

If 2018 ends up going pear-shaped for the red cars, this is one of the instances people would look at!
And Hockenheim of course.....

You have to chuckle, thinking about VET`s gloat over the radio after winning at Silverstone: "In their house!!
Well that chicken came home to roost!

That was a thrilling race. Excellent win for HAM.

VET did exactly the same thing before and took out BOT. He under-steered into the side of HAM, then had the nerve to claim he was left no room.

The fact that that's just been called a 'thrilling race' says it all.
Another dull as dishwater procession, discounting the brief switcheroo in lap 5, with one inevitable overtake.

Good race!!
Thanks to illegal (I presume) streaming I got to watch the complete race. VET binned it and Ham drove a good race.

If you can`t appreciate the action in Lap 1 between the 2 WC leaders, the subsequent numerous overtakes by Car 5, the different strategies by the red & silver team and the precarious state of RAI`s rears in the final laps....then I put it to you....that you are perhaps not a F1 fan.

Maybe stockcar is more your thing, or the demolition derby!?
Or the ovals, with 25 overtakes each lap.
Not whacking it....the above mentioned categories are action packed stuff!

What action? Vettel made a boo boo and a procession to the finish, with the one inevitable pass following. Same script each race.
No, I'm not a fan (anymore), F1 has lost it's edge over the years. Even one of those current four times world champions calls it and it's cars "crap racing". Current two times World Champion "too predicable".

Car 5 Qualified 5th, finished 5th.
RAI's 'precarious rears' made no difference other than to confirm that inevitable overtake was going to happen sooner rather than later. Once HAM went longer on the first set, RAI's goose was cooked.

For all the hype, all the money, there's no mystery, little substance and precious little actual racing.

Mercedes have been extremely good at controlling the media narrative over the past few weeks.

If only they were as good at managing their young driver program. It will be outrageous if their other juniors get treated like Pascal Wehrlein.

1. Where does the thread imply it's just for F1 'fans'? The thread title is a question asking for an opinion.

2. Just because I'm no longer a 'fan' it doesn't mean I'm incapable of understanding the sport or suddenly lost the ability to watch it.

3. How many of you actually fit the definition of a 'fan'? Fan, shortened form of 'Fanatic' - a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal. I never fit that definition although I once used to rather enjoy watching the sport that is F1.
I still watch races, as I have done for 40 years, I'm still capable of forming an opinion. That opinion was one that suggested that a race with only one inevitable overtake from it's winner being called 'thrilling' shows how far the current version of the sport has fallen.
Current and former world champions (many with multiple) are saying the same. Current and former drivers are saying the same. Fans (& regular followers) of the sport are saying the same. Even the media paid to 'hype it up' are struggling not to say the same.

SIA GP next, VET win, Silver cars 2nd/3rd/4th depending on which version of RAI turns up. One of the Red Bulls may sneak a podium if there's any problems with the leading cars. zzzzzzz

Huh?

My bad. Typo/brainfart.

Car 5 qualified 2nd finished 4th.
Please indicate which of the subsequent inevitable 'overtakes' as he made way back through the field (after demonstrating some rather poor race craft) were anything other than a superior car easily passing those much slower.
Overtaking a silver or red car (both of which are accepted as superior to the rest of the field) may have been interesting and involved some race skill but alas, they all passed him. He only passed VER on paper so not even any tension with regards to VER's 'erratic' defending of positions.

F1 is not the sport it once was. The fun and excitement has been engineered out of it both on and off the track. Today it's mainly a glorified procession with only a handful of thrills and spills per season.
The thread asked for an opinion on the season so far, I gave one as a regular F1 spectator. If you don't like it, hard cheese, it's still valid even if you don't agree with it personally.

Threads die when prats jump down others throats either because they don't agree, simply cannot understand the language use or the point being made. Anyone else watching that just thinks, why bother joining in?
So simmer down and keep enjoying today's 'thrilling races' if they float your boat, I'll keep watching in the hope that the sport will return to the great races they once were.

Honestly, he does have a point.

I'm an F1 enthusiast, been following F1 for ages - and I turned off the TV after seeing Raikkonen struggling to get past Bottas. I knew Hamilton would get a jump on him, so I decided to go to sleep (bad enough that the races are later & later into the night here in Asia so that people in America who couldn't be bothered to watch F1 can wake up later on a Sunday morning!)

The only great race this season was China.

No, it`s not valid at all. Your negativity will not temper my enthusiasm.
You have the whole F1 world; like journalists in the know, ex-drivers, team bosses etc being very excited after Monza had ended.......I just happened to re-watch some of the interviews and listened to some of the commentary (in different languages).
So no, your opinion is not valid at all.

Oh, I will....
Enjoy this thread, I will continue to discuss F1 in chat groups and forums in which people may disagree about things, but at least you find yourself talking to fans.
I can do without the general negativity in which the sport is bad-mouthed in general, thank you very much.

Oh yeah, the whole F1 world thinks it's all tea & biscuits in the sport currently. Many of the drivers are calling it crap. many of the teams (and staff within them) are calling it crap. Many of the journalist PAID to HYPE IT UP are struggling not to call it crap. Many of the journalists NOT paid to hype it up are calling it crap.

My opinion is valid, even if you don't like it. It's opinion held by many others throughout the F1 world, even if you don't like it.

I'm sorry, I still haven't realised 'fans' are the only ones allowed an opinion on the sport.
By definition that means they are fanatical, which is often accompanied by a lack of objectivity and various sets of blinkers.
I do not define myself as fanatical about the sport but I have been a regular spectator for over 40 years. If you can't accept an objective opinion from someone because they "aren't a 'fanatic'", more fool you.

I'm glad you enjoy your little fanboy circles elsewhere. If you can't handle an opinion that differs from your own 'fanboy' view, feel free to add me to your ignore list.
