The correct dog breed

Sat Aug 04, 2018 10:55 am

Border collie.

Wonderful companion. Willing and able to walk mile after mile with you. Big enough to be useful unlike ornamental lap dogs and not so big to be troublesome around the house. Very intelligent, far more so than its dumb as a plank cousin the retriever. Not a big yapper like beagles are. Shepherding instinct useful for families with children.

That is all.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own

Golden Retriever. While a border collie always has to be kept busy, a retriever wants to do what you want to do. So, one day he'll be happy to go on a 5 mile hike and the next he'll be just as happy to curl up on the floor next to you while you read or take a nap. Also, they are much more affectionate than a border collie.

Despite what you think about retrievers, to me, the correct dog breed would be a Labrador Retriever. Dependable, easy to train, very laidback, extremely loyal and extremely smart. We currently have 2, a male just over 5 years and a female 9.5 years old. They are our 5/6 labs since we have been married (34 years) and are truly part of the family. We can take them anyplace, in the car, out to eat, to the beach you name it. You name the location, they will blend in with the wallpaper and will be no trouble at all.

Again, maybe you had bad luck with previous retrievers, but I think they are go to breed.

The best dog breed is the one you have now. Over the years I have owned Greyhounds, a mongrel, , two Old English Sheepdogs [ hard work ]
and now a Border Collie and they all had the good and not so good points, but the Border Collie I have now is special.

People say they need a lot of exercise and Toby's early morning walk is the highlight of his day [ well that is after food ], but during the day he likes sleeping and wondering around the garden mainly to keep the pigeons, magpies away which is very handy.

He will be 12 at Christmas and is starting to show his age , but he is still a wonderful dog

The one that fits best to your living situation. If you are the lazy type a Border Collie or Husky are not for you. If you live in a flat a large breed is not for you, especially if there are many stairs to climb and the dog gets older.

At the moment my favourite would be a French Bulldog. Should we move out of the city, it would be a Labrador Retriever. But there is no breed I do not like.

We have a black pug at the moment. She is high maintenance with all her wrinkles on her face. She loves people. We had a pit bull and a lab mix for a long time. They were good. For some reason, the pit bull defended me and stayed by me no matter what, even though I was not the one who originally got him.

Are dogs totally relevant in modern society too? How many hunter gatherers require their dog to help them hunt prey, protect their primitive settlements etc? There are modern solutions to the reasons why dogs were domesticated.

I'll grant you that some do have applications such as cattle herding, fire and rescue and drug detection. But as a whole dogs aren't required by most of society.

I've had retrievers for the past 30 years or so and while I currently have a Golden, I do prefer Labs simply because of the grooming requirements. Goldens are much more high maintenance in that regard, Labs are pretty much wash and wear.
My Goldens have had wonderful personalities and since they are so eager to please they were easily trainable. I have been involved in therapy dog work for the past 20 years and you simply can't beat a Golden for that type of work. They must be in contact with a human being at all times
That having been said, my first therapy dog was a Chocolate Lab and he was simply amazing. If he had a driver's license, I wouldn't even have had to go with him on our visits. He really was a Golden in a different colored coat. He was my four legged soul mate, my once in a lifetime canine companion that will never be replaced.

Mutts exclusively for me. Why pay ridiculous breeder's fees for a pedigreed dog that may not possess ANY of the traits for which that breed is known when one can go down to the local shelter and pick out a generic dog that truly needs a home with a size and temperament to suit your needs? Getting to know a mutt is part of the fun of owning one.

Agree on Boxer.
I'm not a dog person - never had one as a life companion, only multiple cats - but every time I met one and btw I have the owner's permission, I really like to play with them. Seems like they can understand your feelings. I think the death of a dog is one of the things that can hurt you so much you'd remember the feeling forever.

I personally like Huskies a lot. I have one that is 11 years old and another at 13 weeks at the moment. Never had any issue with our older pup, very tame mannered and just a lot of fun. The pup is quite the handful, as any puppy is.. But he is shaping up nicely. Learned his commands quickly (sit, down, paw, “high five”, speak). Listens surprisingly well with those commands for being so young. His only “flaws” at this point are his standard puppy-biting any moving limb and object he can find on the ground and just getting into every little thing he can. Once he outgrows those behaviors, it will be awesome. We walk them a few miles each evening and have a decent yard and stuff for them to play and work out that energy in. Definitely not a breed you can be lazy with, but not nearly as bad as some make them out to be (at least, in my experience). We have always had great luck with dogs, though.

I also had a lab mix and she was a complete sweetheart, far more “cuddly” and wanted affection and such constantly, while the husky is more independent and likes his time solo. Both awesome for different reasons. Unfortunately, lost of lab mix just a few months ago at a long, healthy 15.5 years. Miss her so much!

I love our yellow lab. She is like a third parent to our children.

We acquired her at 4 months when the first owners who bought her from a breeder returned her to the breeder (thanks to his no questions asked if anything is wrong bring the pup back to me and I'll refund your money 100% policy). The first owners acquired her because they wanted to break their daughters fear of dogs. Such an asinine thought process. Obviously it didn't go well. A two month old dog is not how you break a fear of dog phobia. She was so rambunctious back then.

We took her in our home and haven't looked back. Great at retrieving ducks, loves to swim in our pool with the children and if you are having a lazy day she doesn't care, she'll lay down next to you (as long as you're on the floor - she knows she's not allowed on the furniture - if you're not on the floor she's content to give your legs a bath or warm your toes). The kids love to lay with her and read books while they rest their head on her chest/belly. Very cute.

There’s four different Sennenhund breeds, Elsa our dog is a Greater Swiss, they are the biggest of the breeds, next is the more common Bernese Mountain Dog, they have long coats which require a lot of work, the smaller dogs are the Appenzeller Mountain Dog and the Entlebucher Mountain Dog, the all have the same tri colour markings, the Greater Swiss also occasionally comes as a bi colour red and white.

Greater Swiss are very relaxed dogs, great family dogs and really don’t require a lot of work. They’re happy being with the family, they aren’t outside dogs.
