It's like picking between your children.

I'd go with "Closer to the Heart".

It shows pretty much the full range of what the band has on offer.

They can do acoustic with mind boggling lyrics or they can crank with the best of them or anything/everything in between, all in one song.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings

Great thread! I love Rush!

I think I never heard Rush on a German radio station. I often heard it on AFN and I immediately loved it.

The amount of computing power needed to answer this question far exceeds the amount available in the known universe.

Therefore, this is, in fact, currently an impossible question to answer.

However, until such time as enough computing power is available, the designated placeholder is unquestionably "La Villa Strangiato".

Blah blah blah.

Come on people, there can be only one: Red Barchetta!

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better, vanished time
We fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

The correct answer is "Free Will."

On a side note...I hear many people who follow music closely and/or professionally describe Neal Peart as the best drummer of all time. Although I have no reason to dispute this, why? What is it about his drumming skills that distinguishes him above all others? And are you able to tell from listening to Rush songs or is it better to judge him on his solos?

I always asked myself how Geddy Lee was able to play bass guitar the way he did and singing at the same time. Take for example „The big money“. Amazing bass line and definitely not easy to play but to sing at the same time, that’s really amazing.

I am convinced that playing bass guitar and singing is much more challenging than for example guitar or piano plus singing.

Interesting how we all want to post lyrics in this thread but in the Led Zep thread, not so much.

Here's some absolute rock poetry, in the spirit of the days when people expected a lot from those in high places...

And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mold a new reality
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart

The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
They forge their creativity
Closer to the heart
Yes closer to the heart

Philosophers and plowmen
Each must know his part
To sow a new mentality
Closer to the heart
Yes closer to the heart, yeah, oh

Whoa whoa
You can be the captain
And I will draw the chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
Well closer to the heart, yeah
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own

And working the bass pedals at the same time too.

He's doing a large part of what most band's keyboardists do with their left hand with his feet.

So much of Rush music depends on the undertones he's generating with pedals.

Well, I don't typically rate musicians by who is the best all-time and such. Neil Peart is, unquestionably, a fantastic drummer. And he's certainly one of the most influential rock drummers of the last 50 years.

You also have to keep in mind that Rush fans are fanatics. So they are fanatical about the band, the songs, the talents of the band members, etc.

I’m a lifelong fan and my driving go tos are Tom Sawyer, Working Man, Spirit of Radio...and not yet mentioned here, Subdivisions. That one grew on me over time.

Rush is one of the greatest bands of all time, and without question the greatest 3 man rock act of all time. The Police could’ve contended but Sting nullified their entry with his solo artist career.

I had a saying that Rush is to prog rock as ZZ Top is to blues-based rock, both three man power trios.

They are the best trios of what I consider my early era to be.

Before my era it'd have to be Cream or Jimi Hendrix Experience.

My later era: Police, Stevie Ray Vaughn / DT, Nirvana.

The correct and proper song is "Free Will". Further, the correct lyrics within the correct song are:

"If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice"
When seconds count...the police are minutes away.
Unless it's expressly prohibited, it's allowed.
You are not entitled to a public safe space.

Actually, the correct answer is any Rush song in which Geddy Lee plays his Rickenbacker 4001 bass.

I responded with zero research and a faulty memory. Some great names there. But alive after all these years and tight as a drum live for 35 years is quite possibly unheard of in this genre at least. I’ll always worship at the Rush temple.

That's not even the correct title, "Freewill" is.

Not the best ever Rush song: takes a bit too long to build up, not as catchy as others.

When it finally hits its peak, it has one of the best Rush lines:

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete

.

fr8mech wrote:

To me the lyrics don't flow as well as "Closer to the Heart".

For instance,

You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate

Or:

Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt
That's far too fleet

Seems too forced to me.

The lyrics to "Closer to the Heart" just flow from beginning to end, the music starts with acoustical guitar and ends up in a jam, it's got a catchier riff, it's a far better song over all. "Freewill" just happens to trigger some Randians.

PS: http://ultimateclassicrock.com/rush-songs/ is pretty well done. Although I personally would not put the songs in this order, I get why others would.

Well, I love Rush, always have. I can't pick just one favorite song. Freewill is up there, as is Fly by Night (one of the first songs I learned on guitar, actually, just aped it by listening).

But I'll go with a deeper track: Marathon.

"Freewill" took me awhile to really get into. It's kind of quirky. But there's so much in there, it's just great. I think I really got into it when I started playing it on guitar and bass.

I used to jam that song with some friends, and I'd be playing bass and singing. I used to really love belting out that part. Hard notes to hit. Hell, the whole song is a mouthful to sing.

Nope. Nothing against "Closer to the Heart", but I prefer many other Rush songs.

slider wrote:

Good choice. "Marathon" is also better than "Closer to the Heart".

I know people aren't as fond of newer Rush, but I shall mention that there are many good songs on the recent albums, like "Driven", "Vapor Trails", "Far Cry", and one of the most beautiful songs they've written - "The Garden" (which, fittingly, closes out their last album).

Free will is correct.

Not sure on Neal. I think he just has a lot of drums in his kit. I think some just get a reputation that sticks, even if it’s not accurate. John Bonham and Keith Moon come to mind when you talk about great drummers. Neil is probably in the top 10 though.

Waiting for the winds of change
To sweep the clouds away
Waiting for the rainbow's end
To cast its gold your way
Countless ways
You pass the days

Waiting for someone to call
And turn your world around
Looking for an answer to
The questions you have found
Looking for
An open door

Oh you don't get something for nothing
You don't get freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

Which, is what I said basically.

No you didn't.

Well, well. I think I got what you meant. Now imagine how hard it has to be if you play the slapping bass and sing at the same time (not that Rush ever used the slapping bass, IIRC).

I find no absolution
In my rational point of view
Maybe some things are instinctive
But there's one thing you could do
You could try to understand me --
I could try to understand you...

In my experience, it is indeed much harder. I never sang lead, but singing backing vocals and playing complicated bass parts was very difficult, and took some serious practice.

I just changed my mind after watching this gobsmacking YT video..it turns out the correct Rush song is all of them together in a medley. I stand by my comment, this is the tightest 3 man band that ever walked onto a stage:

Hang on till 6:35 and the hairs on your arms will spark.

I feel bad about resurrecting a thread, but this is still on page one and I just had to share this.

Fifty-four-year-old Pete Zirpolo, a member of Baltimore's Marching Ravens, was caught on camera jamming out to Rush's "Tom Sawyer" during Sunday's Ravens-Buffalo Bills game.
