When you think political correctness couldn't get any worse . . .

Sun Dec 02, 2018 7:33 am

. . . it just does:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-46413209

Hmmm . . . there are six per cent of people out there who are easily offended, and they seem to call the shots. There are numerous versions of this Christmas classic. I think I'll download them all.

Two thoughts spring to mind.

1. Firstly, that in those days it would be inappropriate for a woman to be too forward.

2. Secondly, one or other of them could seep on the couch.

You seem to be quite offended by the decision of this company who are free to make such decisions?

Do you think what music is played should be regulated so people get offended equally?

Should be use Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Mo to decide what we do and don’t play ;)

I’m fine with private organisations making decision on what they invest their money in, if they feel it’s better to placate the 6percent then that’s up to them.

Maybe we should stop people broadcasting religious songs because of their manipulative lies?

It is not appropriate for this era. I get manly when Donna Reed breaks the Victrola record in "It's A Wonderful Life" partly because does she not know how much that is worth???? and partly because damn, woman! calm your hormones down!

I remember when I was of a certain age and would be triggered by certain songs. Do Me! by Bel Biv Devoe, for example. OMG that would set me off because I was not allowed to be me and date who I wanted. That did not give me licence to grope and whatever any man I wanted. I kinda got over it. I still hate that song for what it represents to me but so what?

If it is cold outside, give the man a WARM blanket (not a flimsy sheet) and show him where the couch is. You are a strong woman and can kick him out as far as you need to. We neighbors will help.

Next, you will be saying that "Mele Kalikimaka" is not Hawaiian for "Merry Christmas"......

Love the song! Also like Santa baby. Soo inappropriate when it was sung at our middle school by one of our friends daughters... But still loved it!

Crazy.

Just enjoy the music, the song, and you'll be OK. I

I'll definitely be listening for it this year

The Pogues Fairytale of New York has also offended the terminally offended by anything people, just like Dire Straits Money For Nothing.

Of couse it is, but this smacks of trying to placate a hysterical minority than anything else.

The strong women I know are not ones to be offended by mere lyrics. Funny that these women tend to be of the more mature variety.

There are a number of songs written years ago with content that by today's standards that is offensive, sexist, racist or by artists who have done illegal or socially offensive things. That presents a problem for commercial broadcasters as due to declining numbers of listeners, changes in society's demographics, they need to be careful not to offend even a few to keep their numbers up. Still, 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' is nowhere near as offensive to PC than others that do get airplay on commercial radio or in download sales.

The offended 6% can always turn off the radio for three minutes.

They have a right to be offended, just as I have a right to listen to what offends them.

It seems the social media generation go out of their way to find shit to be offended about. SMH.

What's needed here is empirical data tracing actual specific instances of sexual assault to the offender having listened to this quaint 1940's Christmas song.

Take their cues from Frank Loesser, today's rapists do. :sarcastic:

I hate Christmas songs. The same.... what? twelve songs over and over and over? I have turned to podcasts to fill the void until this horrid "music" is gone. It would irritate me a little less if anyone could tell me why "Rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens" is a Christmas song. All these years of asking and I still have no answer as to why. Where did it even come from? Was it cut from the movie "Holiday Inn" or something?

:checkmark:
So it became more a song of gifts than of Christmas but as that is a key modern part of the holiday advertisers like it,

It's not. The real way to say Merry Christmas in Hawaiian is essentially not pronounceable in English unless you know how to speak Hawaiian consonants and vowels.

I just watched the clip from the original film (I'd never seen it before) and interestingly the situation is reversed in the second half: the man wants to leave and it's the woman trying to persuade him to stay. Clearly, in both cases, the No is not a definite No. It's one of those "no, but I'm open to be persuaded" Nos.

That's the way I've always heard it sung, at least by Dean Martin. What film is the song originally from?

Off-topic but speaking of Dean Martin Christmas songs, I've liked "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84gX8NxP9SI since I heard it used to great effect in a wonderfully dark and disturbing Christmas episode of the rebooted The Outer Limits series titled "The Revelations of Becka Paulson".

I'm offended that people are offended that other people are offended by a song. Anyways, I really liked Seth Macfarlane's version of the song with Sara Bareilles.

To be honest the most offensive Christmas song is Wham! - Last Christmas, only because how cruel it is that George Michael died on Christmas day.

I'm guessing they would find "Taking the reins" equally offensive, but I wonder how they'd feel about "Chomping at the bit" or "Kicking up your heels"?

Having spent a lot of time on a cattle farm and around chicken farms growing up, I'm mystified by how vegans seem to feel the need to credit cattle and poultry with intelligence and sensitivity that neither possess in real life. In reality both species have fairly strong natural instincts, but your chances of ever teaching either one to do anything that conflicts with or even deviates from those instincts are nil. In computer terms, they're both "All ROM and no RAM".

I'm offended because Neptune is a planet that is named after an ancient Roman god that was culturally appropriated from the Greek God Poseidon (which in all likelihood was appropriated from other group of people from antiquity
